4a5ardous Chemical
4a5ardous Class
4ydrochloric acid is a hi(hly corrosi%e2 stron( inor(anic!mineral acid. 'f not stored and handled properly2 this can pose a serious threat to the health and safety of laboratory personnel2 emer(ency responders and chemical waste handlers. 4ence2 it is important to follow safety protocols to handle this chemical. 4ydrochloric acid is used in the chemical industry as a chemical rea(ent in the lar(e+scale production of %inyl chloride for P6C plastic2 and )D'!7D' for polyurethane. 't has numerous smaller+scale applications2 includin( household cleanin(2 production of (elatin and other food additi%es2 descalin(2 and leather processin(.

Protocol/Procedure
4ydrochloric acid is a rea(ent used in or(anic reactions2 and is a stron(2 corrosi%e acid. Researchers should wear lab coats2 (lo%es2 and safety (o((les or safety (lasses with side shields when handlin( hydrochloric acid. 8ll worA with concentrated hydrochloric acid should be done inside a fume hood. 8s a rea(ent2 hydrochloric acid may be used in ;uantities of L"mL up to "L2 and across a wide ran(e of temperatures. Dhen worAin( with concentrated hydrochloric acid2 it is important to maAe sure the worA area is free of any bases as these may react %iolently with the acid. 't is also common to prepare dilute solutions of hydrochloric acid for use as rea(ents2 or for worAin( up or(anic reactions. Dhen dilutin( hydrochloric acid with water2 the concentrated hydrochloric acid should be added slowly to water to minimi5e the e@othermic nature of the reaction and any dan(ers from splashin(. 8ny solutions which contain hydrochloric acid should be disposed of as ha5ardous waste after reactions are complete. 4ydrochloric acid should be stored in a secondary container inside a desi(nated corrosi%e cabinet. 8dditionally2 hydrochloric acid should be stored in a separate area from any bases due to the dan(er of an e@othermic reaction if allowed to mi@. 8lso2 hydrochloric acid should be stored away from o@idi5ers since mi@in( can lead to the (eneration of chlorine (as.

Protocol/Procedure Chemical Storage Do not store near combustible materials. Feep container closed when not in use. Store in a cool2 dry2 well+%entilated area away from incompatible substances. Do not store near alAaline substances. Store protected from moisture. 'deally2 hydrochloric acid should be stored in isolation from all other chemicals in an appro%ed acid or corrosi%es safety cabinet. 4ydrochloric acid is incompatible with metals2 o@idi5in( a(ents2 reducin( a(ents2 bases2 acrylonitrile2 chlorates2 finely powdered metals2 nitrates2 perchlorates2 perman(anates2 epichlorohydrin2 aniline2 carbides2 fulminates2 picrates2 or(anic materials2 flammable li;uids. Ce%er worA alone. )aAe sure there is another worAer present who is also trained in the hydrochloric acid SOP. Chemical Disposal Collect hydrochloric acid li;uid waste in labeled " (al. plastic containers. Do not mi@ stron(ly acidic and stron(ly basic a;ueous waste streams. Do not mi@ with other waste or incompatibles Store ha5ardous waste in closed containers2 in secondary containment and in a desi(nated location.
