Northeast Asia Regional Peacebuilding Institute (NARPI)

NARPI has been hosted twice in South Korea (Seoul and the DMZ region) and once in Japan (Hiroshima). Participants from Northeast Asia and around the world have gathered to study conflict transformation and practice building a culture of peace. The NARPI community is growing - in 2013 the total number of participants passed 100! This year NARPI will be hosted in Nanjing, China. In this city with a legacy as a political and cultural center, and also with a harrowing history of massacre, NARPI will bring together peacebuilders from the region to share and learn together. This year, your support will help to increase the number of participants from China and other parts of Northeast Asia and encourage the growth of peace education and peacebuilding NGOs in China.

About NARPI Trainings

The 2014 Summer Training will offer six one-week courses about conflict and peace framework, restorative justice, peace education, trauma healing, mediation and arts and storytelling. The courses will be hosted at Nanjing University, where the field of peace studies is emerging in China. During the field trip, participants will visit the Nanjing Massacre Museum and learn more about the horrifying rape and killing of civilians in 1937. Classes such as restorative justice, trauma healing, and arts and storytelling will give special attention to historical conflict. Learning more about the tragic history of Nanjing will provide new motivation to address the tensions that continue in Northeast Asia today. As NARPI becomes more established, we rely more and more on smaller donations from within our network of friends and supporters. We continue to hear feedback that the cost of NARPI ($1,300 USD for the whole two-week program) is a major obstacle for many of our participants. Students, teachers, and people who work for small grassroots NGOs have great potential to make a difference for peace in our region, but they lack resources for continuing education. Every small contribution goes a long way to build up NARPIs scholarship fund, and NARPIs like-minded supporters are a valuable part of our network.
