Wednesday, March 5th 1. Objective/Attendance: Analyze responses to Aggressive Nations 2. Vocab Review (5-7 min) a.

Pass back word maps students completed last week (every student should get one look over tonight to make sure there are enough words for every student if not, create them yourself) b. Have students quiz one another on vocab words i. Pair up by: rows (each student will quiz 3 other students on their vocab word) ii. Explain first, model second, questions third, disperse fourth. iii. Ask for the term: say the definition, ask for the term it applies to. Whether or not the student gets the term correct, exchange word maps after one round. By the end, you should have been quizzed by (at least) 3 other students and be holding a word map different than the one you were handed at the beginning. iv. While this quizzing is going on be sure to be walking around and monitoring student behavior. Make sure students are on task and active. Make sure ALL students are involved even those who tend to try to not be. c. Come back together as a class call on students at random to ask their word to another student & get the answer. We will go through these vocab words again on Friday, so it is important to have a general understanding of what the terms mean. 3. Jigsaw Activity a. 3 groups at end b. Within groups of 7/8 students: 2 to each section (this way EVERYONE WILL PARTICIPATE) Once you have read YOUR section compare important notes with the other person WITH YOUR SECTION c. Once you have compared YOUR SECTION teach it to the other people in your group (you will know each section by the end of this activity!) i. Japan Seeks an Empire (p 481) (7) 1. Pacific empire, include China (provide raw materials & markets, give room for rising pop.) 2. Engineers & technicians built large mines and factories c. 1st direct challenge to League of Nations i. Japan ignored protests, withdrew from League 1933 3. Japan Invades China a. 1937: Japan northern China, Beijing, Nanjing, other large cities fell to Japan

b. Chinese guerrillas led by Mao Zedong continued to fight Japanese ii. European Aggressors on the March (p 482) (7) 1. Mussolini Attacks Ethiopia a. Ethiopia was 1 of 3 independent nations in Africa b. Mussolini Ethiopia in October 1935 (swords/spears v airplanes, tanks, guns & poison gas) c. Ethiopian emperor appealed to League for help; basically ignored d. Britain allowed Italian troops & supplies pass through Suez Canal on way to Ethiopia (appeasement to keep peace) 2. Hitler Defies Versailles Treaty a. March 1935: Hitler announced Germany would not obey Treaty of Versailles provisions (League basically ignored) b. German troops entered Rhineland-1936 (zone formed as buffer) *more appeasement* c. **Turning point to war** i. Strengthened Hitlers power & prestige within Germany ii. Balance of power changed to German favor iii. Weak response encouraged Hitler to expand iv. October 1936 Rome-Berlin Axis agreement 3. Civil War Erupts in Spain a. Spanish Civil War: monarchy until 1931 republic declared (government held through liberals & Socialists held office amid crises) b. 1936: Army leaders joined Fascist General Francisco Franco (3 year long civil war) c. Hitler & Mussolini sent troops & supplies to aid Franco (Nationalists) d. Republicans (Spains elected government supporters) received little/no help from Western democracies e. 1939: Franco becomes Fascist dictator iii. Democratic Nations try to Preserve Peace (p 484) (8) 1. United States Follows an Isolationist Policy a. Isolationism: belief that political ties to other countries should be avoided b. Entry to WWI had been HUGE error c. 1935: Congress passes 3 Neutrality Acts banning loans & sales of arms to nations at war 2. The German Reich Expands a. November 5, 1937: Third Reich would absorb Austria & Czechoslovakia b. Treaty of Versailles prohibited this type of union (Anschluss)

c. March 1938: German troops to Austria, annexed in (Britain & France largely ignored) d. September 1938: Hitler demanded the Sudetenland be given back to Germany, Czechoslovakia refused, asked France for help 3. Britain and France Again Choose Appeasement a. Munich Conference, Sept 29, 1938: Germany, Britain, France, Italy; preserve peace by giving into German demands 4. Nazis and Soviets Sign Nonaggression Pact a. August 23, 1939 Stalin & Hitler signed pact while Stalin was in midst of negotiating with Britain & France to end Hitlers power 5. 1 extra black section in red section = 1 extra person in group d. In your groups each will take 1 black section to read and understand i. Make key notes summarize to your group what was going on in your section ii. Use a blank sheet of paper to plan your visual 1. MUST HAVE: a. Important figures iii. VISUAL NOT TEXT 1. Comic book strip type visual, multiple pictures, etc. iv. Get visual approved by teacher 1. May have to make changes to visual/ add or subtract v. After visual has been approved: Have 1 or 2 people from the group draw on the white board the visual which was agreed upon by whole group e. 1 person from each group will be the spokesperson will present to the rest of the class the visual you used to explain your section of the text.
