Foster confidence and self-belief in order to empower learners to find solutions to life challenges. To provide practical experiences and develop reflective learners who are able to communicate effectively and contribute in a diverse team setting.

Indicative content This module provides students with the opportunity to apply core knowledge into real life situations in a safe and supported way. The following topics will be covered during the module: Practical work based placement Introduction to the 3 sectors: Public, Private and Voluntary. Identifying and arranging placements. Contextualisation of core modules Frameworks of reflection and self-analysis in the context of placement selfevaluation. Your workplace placement organisational values, beliefs and infrastructure The impact of your own values and beliefs in practice Workplace dynamics/structures policies and procedures Developing achievable action plans Predominant delivery method:

Intended Learning Outcomes: 1. Examine the core purpose, philosophy and values of your placement area and discuss how it contributes to society. 2. Discuss the core skills and knowledge required by your placement area and reflect upon how you have developed these in practice. 3. Reflect upon your learning experience and identify areas for development and personal strengths which will form the basis of a clear action plan for year two. 4. Demonstrate in practice acquired skills and attitudes to the required level of performance. Learning and Teaching methods You will be introduced gradually to practice in order to develop confidence and self-awareness within a safe and structured safe environment. Placements can be field specific, for those of you who know what area you wish to focus on, or they can be in a variety of different areas providing exposure to a variety of learning opportunities to support your personal development. Second and third year students will mentor you throughout the module and offer support and advice in relation to identifying placements and tips on how to survive your first placement. You will meet with a variety of employers at the beginning of the module. They will introduce you to their work area and discuss a variety of placement opportunities. Clear contact points will be identified and spaced out throughout the year, with supervision support in practice provided by your personal tutor. You will have regular tutorials throughout the module. These will be with the module team or field tutor and your own personal tutor. These tutorials will be delivered in a way that suits you and can be via Skype; email or face to face. Moodle activities will provide you with learning activities, forums and directed study. You will have face to face lectures which will explore key concepts that underpin the module. You will attend workshops where you will discuss and share your placement experiences and explore how the concepts you are discovering in your level 4 modules are being applied in practice. You will have directed study and activities which are supported by a workbased learning workbook which can be completed online or paper based. Action Learning Sets will provide you with structured activities, peer support and feedback. Breakdown of study time:

Assessment and Feedback: Summative assessment: 1. A reflective structured learning journal. (100% of module mark.) Part 1: Examine the contribution the placement area makes to society and explore how this impacts on your own values and ways of working. Reflect upon how your own values may impact on the way that you work within the area. (Learning outcome 1. Approximately 400 words. Provides 20% of your total mark). Part 2: Reflect upon the fundamental skills and knowledge you have developed within your placement. (Learning outcome 2. Approximately 500 words. Provides 40% of your total mark). Part 3: Reflect upon your learning journey and develop a realistic action plan for year 2. The action plan should include actions which are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and have clear timescales. (Learning Outcome 3. Approximately 600 words. Provides 40% of your total mark). 2. Confirmation of Satisfactory Placement Completion (Pass/Fail) Completion of placement documentation. (Learning Outcome 4. Pass/Fail) Broad assessment type:

Written exams: Practical exams: Coursework: 100% Formative assessment: 1. Formative reflective journal: Submitted on Moodle. The journal is maintained throughout placement and feedback will be submitted regularly by the module tutor. It will outline key learning points and will directly contribute to the summative learning journal. 2. A midway report from the placement supervisor which provides formative feedback and an agreed action plan for the remainder of the placement. The Formative midway action plan is submitted via Moodle and feedback and support will be given accordingly. 3. Tutorials. 4. Structured peer support and feedback through action learning sets. 5. Workshop and group work activities.

Feedback: Formative feedback will take place after Moodle Journal entries have been submitted. (see point 1 above) Midway formative placement feedback. (See point 2 above) Tutors will meet with you after during your placement and will provide you with support, advice and feedback. Feedback will be given during workplace tutor visits. General feedback is delivered by peers and tutors during group work, tutorials and workshops. Written feedback for the summative assessment will be provided in accordance with standard university regulations and given to you within 20 working days. This will inform your approach to your second year.

Related Modules This module provides the basis for your second year, specifically Level 4 and 5 placement modules. Your experiences in this module will support you in the level 5 Leadership in Life Module, where you will be expected to mentor a first year and support them in embarking on their first practice placements.
