Teaching Tips:
Snap It Up
You are able to print and photocopy these pages for your
non-commercial classroom and home use only.
Learning to add numbers requires a good deal of repetition playing games is a good way to make
this repetition fun and motivating!
This game will be very effective for a small group of students to play, after they have been introduced to
the concept of the counting-on strategy. This game gives students the visual support of seeing the
numbers, made up of two dot patterns arrangements.
Before students play the game, introduce the game pieces to the students and look at them together.
Help them to become familiar with the format and rules of the game.
Demonstrate to the students how to find the total by counting on from the larger number. Some students
may need to touch each dot on the card and start counting from one. Other students will be able to count
on from one number to find the total. Some students will hopefully be able to start memorizing some of
the addition facts.
Remember - the more fun a student has the more times they will want to play thereby engaging in the
repetition needed to build solid and meaningful understanding and skills.
Playing games will not only help your students mathematical skills but will assist them learning to
co-operate, concentrate, follow rules, engage with other people and perhaps more importantly win and
lose.

Game Boards 1 for each player
Crocodile Cards as many as you need for 4 per player

Purpose
Students will add numbers represented by dot pattern arrangements.
How to play:
Sit in a circle. One player is chosen to be the caller.
Each player has a game board. Players are instructed to try to add 4 crocodile cards to
their game board.
The crocodile cards are placed face down in the middle of the circle of students.
The first player turns a card and adds the numbers; the teacher may encourage him to
count-on from the larger number.
If the student adds the numbers correctly, he may place it on his game board. If not, it is
returned to the middle.
If a SNAP card is turned, this player must remove all cards from his game board and
return them to the middle of the group.
Play continues until a player has covered all four sections of their game board with
crocodiles.
