You will need: 4mm x 80cm circulars 3.25mm x 80cm circulars to pick up sts with 3.25mm x 40cm Bamboo circulars with non slip plastic cord for Provisional Cast on Big eye needle for Kitchener st Split ring markers 150g Aran weight yarn (I used Special by StyleCraft, shade: Wild Rose, 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool Abbreviations: pw purlwise (slip st by inserting needle as if you were going to purl) kw knitwise (slip st by inserting needle as if you were going to knit) tbl knit through the back loop DSSK -Double ssk decrease: Sl 2tg as if to knit, k1, psso (pass both slipped st over the k1) Provisional cast on with 40cm Bamboo circular needle, Use needles 3 x smaller as well as your reg. needles, best to use bamboo to hold sts at bottom of work, so they dont slip out (they will slip out if you use needles with a metal or slippery nylon cord). I like to leave a long tail so I can continue knitting with that and join in more yarn later. Wrap yarn around 1 circular needle end and 1 of your reg. needles (same as the Turkish method) for as many sts as you need cast on. Pull smaller circ through to dangle evenly. Knit the first row on your reg. needle through the back loop, then knit up for as long as you wish. (Leave tail danglying) To start knitting the other way: pull circ through so needle tip is at tail end. Join in yarn and knit 1st row through the back loop. Continue knitting as per usual. (total of 8st are being worked) C4L th th th Slip right needle tip into the 5 , 6 , 7 and 8th sts on the left needle from the back. Slide the 1st 8sts off th th th the left needle, carefully, slipping the 5 , 6 and 7 and 8th sts onto the right needle at the same time. Insert st nd rd th left needle into the live 1 ,2 , 3 and 4 sts, then slip the sts from the right needle back onto the left needle. Knit each 8 sts as per usual. If sts are too tight, use a smaller dpn to slip into the 4sts at the back C4R (total of 8st are being worked) th th th Slip right needle tip into the 5 , 6 and 7 and 8th sts on the left needle from the front. If sts are too tight, use a smaller dpn to slip into the 4sts at the front. SSK "Improved" : slip the 1st st as if to knit, slip the 2nd stitch as if to purl, then knit those 2 stitches together by inserting left needle through both st at the front Three needle bind off: This cast off is used for joining two pieces of knitting, such as the front and back of a sweater by binding off their stitches together to create a seam. The two needles (in the case of a sweater, each may hold the shoulder stitches) are held parallel with the right sides of the knitting facing each other. Binding off as with the knit cast, each stitch is the result of knitting together one stitch from each needle (i.e. pass needle through first stitch of first needle, first stitch of second needle, wrap yarn, pull through, and drop both sts) 1 of 3

Cast on with a provisional cast on: 27sts, then start pattern from row 2 Plait cable for the brim: Row 1 p2, k15, p2, k8 Row 2 p8, k2, p15, k2 Row 3 p2, k5, C5R, p2, k8 Row 4 p8, k2, p15, k2 (repeat of r2) Row 5 p2, k15, p2, k8 (repeat of r1) Row 6 p8, k2, p15, k2 (repeat of r2) Row 7 p2, k15, p2, k8 (repeat of r1) Row 8 p8, k2, p15, k2 (repeat of r2) Row 9 p2, C5L, k5, p2, k8 Row 10 p8, k2, p15, k2 (repeat of r2) Row 11 p2, k15, p2, k8 (repeat of r1) Row 12 p8, k2, p15, k2 (repeat of r2) Repeat 1- 12 Repeat rows 1-12 until plait measures 60cm, give or take a little you need to end after you have completed Row 11 Leave 70cm tail and thread needle for kitchener st: (kitchener st - practice makes perfect) Hold both ends next to each other, wrong sides together, tips lined up with tails at one end. Using the needle and yarn: Sew in the *kw, kw + off, pw, pw + off* method, starting at No 3: so: Sew kw in the back row 1st stitch, then Sew kw in the front row 1st stitch, and off, then * 1 2 3 4 Pw in the next front row st Pw in the back row st + off Kw in the back row st Kw in the front row st + off *

The key is to match your tension to your knitting, try stopping (remembering were you are up to) and pulling yarn tighter looser if you need.

Now fold over the st st part, use quilt pins to hold outer edges together. You are going to pick up sts along both edges at once, (in effect the reverse of a 3 needle bind off.). Place markers evenly around so you end up with 160sts in total. Using your 3.25mm needles, pick up an edge loop from the front, then place a loop from the back or inside edge on your left needle, insert your right needle into both and knit a st onto the right needle. Before you do the next st, do a YO, by bringing the yarn to the front, pick up sts and knit a st. repeat, so for every st you pick up, you double it with the YO. You should get 160st in total. Change back to 4mm, start Vertical Plaits: On the 1st rnd, k the YO from previous rnd tbl, for purls and knits. Vertical Plaits: Rnd 1: *P5, K15* Rnd 2: *P5, K15* Rnd 3: *P5, K5, C5R* Rnd 4: *P5, K15* Rnd 5: *P5, K15* Rnd 6: *P5, K15* Rnd 7: *P5, K15* Rnd 8: *P5, K15* Rnd 9: *P5, C5L, K5* Rnd 10: *P5, K15* Rnd 11: *P5, K15* Rnd 12: *P5, K15* Repeat these 10 rows until it measures 13cm (give or take a little), but end after rnd 12 2 of 3

Now start the decreases: Continue the cable pattern, but on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th plait, instead of knitting those 15sts, you k2tg with the SSK "Improved" way. Thus reducing those 15sts to 8sts on each of those plaits (end k1) Rnd 12 same as rnd 11, but reduce those 8sts to 4sts Rnd 13 continue in the cable pattern (rnd 3 in pattern), so knit the existing cables, but inbetween them you p3tg, p3tg, p2tg, p3tg. p3tg in affect totally getting rid of those 4 plaits. You should have 80sts left Rnd 14 continue pattern (rnd 4 to rnd 10 in pattern) Rnd 20 Rnd 21 Rnd 22 Rnd 23 Rnd 24 Rnd 25 Rnd 26 Rnd 27 Rnd 28 Rnd 29 Rnd 30 Keep knitting in pattern, but instead of purling those inbetween 5sts: p2tg, p3tg *p2, k15* *p2, k15* *P2, K5, C5R* *p2, k15* *p2, k15* *p2, (k2tg x 7), k1* 42sts *p2tg, k8* 36sts *p1, k1, DSSK, DSSK, k1* 20sts *p1, k4* *DSSK * end k1 60sts 68sts

Snip tail, thread on to needle and slip sts off needle onto tail, pull through and pull to wrong side and secure well. Weave in ends Make a pom pom. Find a piece of wood or plastic that is approx 12cm. Wrap yarn around many times, then slip off, carefully, wrap a piece of yarn around the middle tightly to secure, then cut each end where the fold was with a good pair of scissors. Secure well to the top, sew in label too.
