With hard frosts wilting the flowers and gardens, the bright orange of pump-
kins and maple leaves is the eye-catching color in the landscape now. Bright sun
shining on a perfectly shaped maple grabs your attention but spotting giant
pumpkins in a front lawn makes you do a double-take.
Check out these pumpkins across from the Gordon Pleasant Hill Cemetery at
the intersection of 14th Avenue and Hwy 27, east of Lake Osakis.
Doug Wallace grew the pumpkins in his Gordon Township garden. Besides
starting with giant pumpkin seeds, Doug says it takes lots of water and careful
pruning of the vines to get the really big ones.
Doug’s largest pumpkin, the fifth place winner at the Delano
Weigh-off, weighs 1,019 pounds.

The idea to recycle billboards
became reality in the summer of
2009. From grocery bags and beach
bags to purses and messenger bags,
the billboard vinyl is a perfect
material for long-lasting use. Each
of Lakewood’s billboards is recycled
into reusable tote bags, which are
now sold at The Shoppe, a gift shop
located at Lakewood’s Main
Campus in Staples.
The Eco Bags are constructed by
a local vendor. Each bag is hand-
made and specifically cut to pre-
serve the colors of the original bill-
boards. To purchase a bag, visit

Safety grant awarded
to Lakewood
Health System
The Minnesota Department of
Labor and Industry recently
awarded Lakewood Health System
a $10,000 grant to assist in the
purchase of safety equipment
intended to aid in full body lifting,
seating lifting and walking and
gait training. The grant will be
applied to patient care areas locat-
ed at Lakewood Health System’s
Senior Campus including the Care
Center Rehabilitation Department
and Lakewood Reflections.
Lakewood Health System has
implemented a comprehensive
safety and loss prevention program
and is continually working towards
process improvement in the areas
of employee safety. An internal
Safety Committee meets regularly
to identify and implement safety
measures in prevention of employ-
ee and patient injury. This grant
covers approximately one third of
the total costs of implementing the

The Todd County Historical
Society met October 5 at the muse-
um. President Shirley Lunceford
brought the meeting to order at 7
pm, with 22 members in atten-
dance.
September minutes and treasur-
er’s reports were read and
approved.
The names of Larry and Linda
Paskewitz were omitted from the
September minutes regarding the
history of Philbrook. Linda volun-
teered thousands of hours with her
computer skills and Larry assisted
her with proof reading and other
follow-up. Thanks for the monu-
mental job well done.

Bogus IRS E-mail
sends malicious
software to recipi-

In recent weeks, a phony e-mail
claiming to come from the Internal
Revenue Service has circulated in
large numbers. These messages
have falsely alerted taxpayers to a
fictitious “Notice of Underreported
Income” from the IRS in an
attempt to lure unsuspecting vic-
tims into dangerous waters infest-
ed by identity thieves.
“Taxpayers in the region have
reported receiving multiple mes-
sages – even dozens – in a matter of
days,” said Carrie Resch, IRS
spokesperson. “These crooks are
very aggressive in making their
scam email look urgent. About 2.6
million Minnesotans file tax
returns each year, so these scam-
mers have a large pool of potential
victims who could have reason to
think that a message about their
tax account is real.”

With the cold temps the last few days and the
early snow, I’ve into overdrive trying to finish up
with the last of the summer fishing gear and might
put the boat away in the next week.
As we get close to the lakes freezing over I
think it's a good time to tell the kids to stay off of
the ice. I know it’s very tempting to get out there
as soon as we can, and I know some people like
to tell their friends they were out first just so they
can say they were. I guess the biggest thing we
forget is to never go alone on first ice. Last fall I

several of the little local lakes when I came across a young man (16-
17 years old) out fishing. I watched him, knowing that just a day or two
before there were geese swimming around right where he was fishing.
He was alone! He did not have a life jacket! And the ice was no-where
even close to being safe yet. As he walked to shore I could hear the ice
cracking from his weight. And he was not a very big guy either ...
Maybe 100 pounds 130 with the gear. As he neared the shore I
watched cracks form as he sidestepped around them, only making
them spread even more.
It's no joke people ... Think about it before you try to get first brag-
ging rights! It's not just your life you are putting at risk. Think about the
people who will have to try and rescue you and put their lives in dan-
ger to save you. Think about the family you will leave behind ... Think
about the life you could live and the fishing you will be missing out on
if you don't live. I'm not going to be a hypocrite, I’ve gone out there
plenty early myself, but I never go alone. I never venture out on early
ice without a life jacket, or my picks. And it's a good idea to keep a
throw rope with you. It doesn't have to be a big rope, just something to
toss over to a friend should they go through. I use a old bleach jug with
50 foot of 3/8" nylon rope shoved inside. Make a loop with a knot big
enough so it won’t fall into the jug. Should you need it, just slip the loop
around your wrist, and give the jug a fling. Try a couple practice throws
at home, and aim past your target. Or better yet, just stay off the ice
until you’re sure it’s safe. Tell your kids to stay away from it as well.

Gary A. Truesdell, 49, Staples,
passed away at Lakewood Health
System Hospital on Thursday,
October 8, 2009. A funeral service
was held Monday, October 12, 2009,
at Brenny Funeral Chapel, Staples.
Burial was at Evergreen Hill
Cemetery.
Gary was born August 19, 1960,
to Kenneth and Joan Truesdell, in
Bertha. Gary attended school in
Minneapolis and worked for many
years until becoming disabled. He
moved to Fawn Lake in 2003. Gary
enjoyed hunting, fishing, four
wheeling, and snowmobiling.
Gary is survived by his father,
Kenneth; and brothers, David and
Michael.
He was preceded in death by his
mother, Joan and his grandparents.

Flu season restricts
hospital visitors
With the early onset of flu season
upon us, coupled with the addition-
al risk of the H1N1 flu virus, Tri-
County Hospital, Wadena, is
restricting hospital visitors to
immediate family over the age of 12
only.
Since influenza is an airborne
virus—spread from one person to
another by droplets from coughing
or sneezing—it is important to limit
contacts to decrease spreading it.
Although flu symptoms are felt
throughout the body, the flu virus
lives and multiplies primarily in the
lungs. Community members can
help stop the spread of the flu by
covering their cough, avoiding con-
tact with others when sick and by
washing hands frequently.
“The hospital is not only
attempting to limit the flu from
entering through sick visitors, but
also from being spread to healthy
visitors,” explained Kathy Kleen,
Director of Patient Care Services.
Kleen added that the Center for
Disease Control recommends that if
you are sick with the flu to stay
home for at least 24 hours after
your fever is gone except to seek
emergency medical care.

New veteran’s clinic opens in Alexandria

It was a chilly gray day but the
crowd was enthusiastic for the
ribbon cutting ceremony opening
the Alexandria veteran’s clinic on
October 5. A sputtering open-
cockpit bi-plane did a fly-over as
the opening remarks were made.
The clinic, a 2.5 million dollar
project financed by Jim Conn and
built on land owned by his family,
will provide outpatient medical
care to veterans in a five county
area. It offers a long list of servic-
es: Primary care; specialty care
referrals; mental health, social
work, clinical pharmacy, nutri-
tion and laboratory services;
home-based primary care; pre-
scription processing; and tobacco
cessation counseling.
Veterans from central
Minnesota turned out in force to
witness the ceremony and tour
the new facility.
Dignitaries on hand comment-
ed on the need to serve veterans
in the five county area surround-
ing Alexandria. An aide to Al
Franken spoke on his behalf, cit-
ing the importance of “making
sure all veterans have access to
health care” and acknowledging
the clinic’s potential to better the
lives of veterans. Representative
Collin Peterson spoke of his com-
mittee work in the early 2000s
that resulted in updating
Veteran’s Administration (VA)
services. Senator Amy Klobuchar
noted that many of our military
personnel return to small towns
rather than military bases and
area clinics are vital to health
care. “They didn’t wait in line to
sign up to serve. When they come
back for health care, they should-
n’t have to wait in line or drive
miles and miles,” she said.

Food plots are not all that difficult

My son, Damon, and I were
discussing the placement of a
dual purpose food plot. We want-
ed one that would provide high
quality feed for deer during the
winter and make a good hunting
area for spring turkey. If nothing
else, we do try to provide well for
our wildlife.
Damon suggested a place just
into a narrow twenty acre patch
of timber that seemed to be a
major travel route between two
larger sections of woodland. It
seemed to be a perfect spot with
heavy cover on one end and
water on both sides. I could see
only one problem with planting
in the timber. There is no place to
plant grain because of all the
trees. I knew there were no open
areas in this timber and I should
have known better than to even
ask about the whereabouts of a
clearing “We’ll make one on top of
the hill,” was his immediate
reply. One thing I must say about
my younger son, he has never let
a few hours of back-breaking
labor stop him from accomplish-
ing a goal.

There were no correct guesses.
Not wanting to appear
ungrateful for his idea or assis-
tance, when he grabbed his chain
saw, I picked up mine and we
headed off to cut a few hundred
trees. We briefly described
boundaries where the food plot
should be and started cutting. A
few short hours later, we had all
the undesirable trees felled. Any
tree that looked like it would fit
nicely into my wood stove also
went. Brush and saplings were
clear cut. What remained on
more than an acre of fertile black
dirt were a few straight and
stately oaks in the middle of an
oasis in the forest.
We cut a path into our opening
large enough to drive the tractor.
We dragged all the trees out to
cut for firewood and placed them
in nice neat rows. By the time we
were done, the sun was setting
and I thought I was going to die.
A little physical fitness is a good
thing. Most of a day, working like
our lives depended on the com-
pletion of this project is enough
to almost kill a person. The
ground in our soon to be food plot
looked as though it had been
plowed and tilled after having
several trees dragged over it.
The next day, I called our local
Crop Service to inquire about
some wheat seed. John said yes,
he did indeed have some wheat
seed in stock. He had almost five
hundred bags in stock, just in
case I called in along with a few
other people that needed some
seed. He then asked how much I
wanted. I hate it when people ask
me a question and I don’t even
have a good guess at the answer.
“One bag,” was my immediate
answer. I didn’t know how much
area one bag would cover, nor did
I have a good guess at how much
area I was planting. One bag
seemed reasonable and I could
always get more if necessary.
When he asked which bag I
wanted, I knew he was pulling
my chain. I told him I wanted the
one on the bottom. Not to be out-
done with chain pulling, he
turned to his employees and
yelled, “Get the bottom sack from
that stack for Walter.”
My grandson, Zane, wanted to
help me plant. I never turn down
an offer to help. Walking around
turning the crank on a hand
seeder eventually becomes seri-
ous work. It takes some serious
cranking to go through fifty
pounds of wheat seed. Zane and I
were both tired of the whole proj-
ect before we got done. One bag
seemed about right. A little thick-
er in some places and thinner in
others, but it was close enough
for the work we do.
Last Sunday Damon, Zane,
and I went out to check our food
plot. The wheat stood almost two
inches tall. Parts had been
grazed off by deer and other
places has been scratched out
and eaten by turkeys. A squirrel
scampered up a tree, fresh green
shoots of wheat hanging from his
mouth as we approached. I think
the wildlife like their new dining
area.
With the passage of time, the
muscles are less sore and the
memories dim of how much work
the food plot was. Seeing the
results and the immediate
response from wildlife made us
realize, it really was not that dif-
ficult.

A letter from the country
Dear friends,
Wasn’t the snow pretty? That’s a matter of opinion isn’t it? I thought it
was really pretty--but Sonny didn’t. Of course, I was looking out the living
room window at the lawn swing and furniture with their pretty white snow
caps, and Sonny was out feeding cattle, putting away all the pots of frozen
summer plants and cleaning the toys out of the sandbox for winter storage.
That may have made the difference in opinion. He also dusted the snow off
the lawn furniture and our grandson Zac helped haul it all in to thaw and
be stored away for the winter. Hopefully Zac will also be willing to come help
haul it all out again in the spring. He has been a really good help to us this
summer, from mowing lawn to assisting me in the house when I needed an
extra pair of hands. He’s a great kid, and very funny. We had a few really
good laughs together, and I can always tell him stories about his mom.
Saturday two families of grandkids came with their moms to the Hewitt
Fire Station for a tour and demonstration. Thanks Andrew for showing
them all the equipment and giving them a great tour. They had an enjoy-
able time, and even got to try on a fireman’s uniform and sit in the fire
truck. Of course, the siren was a favorite of the littler ones. It’s a great vol-
unteer group of guys and they provide a valuable service to their communi-
ty. Be sure to recognize the firemen in your community for their volunteer
efforts. Most organizations are more than willing to set up tours.
Be sure to take a good look at the picture of the cougar on the front page.
We have had several reports of cougars being seen in the area and earlier
this fall some folks that live just east of Browerville brought in a photo of a
cougar they had taken from their deck. The photo wasn’t of good enough
quality for use in the paper, but it was clearly a cougar. Also, early in
September a cougar was killed by a vehicle on a road near Bemidji, so I
guess it’s safe to say there are a few around.
Be safe on the roads. It takes a few times on snowy roads to get your win-
ter grove back.

A stark reflection of our
economic downturn
To the Editor:
In recent years as Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative’s Community
Trust board members have reviewed Operation Round Up grant applica-
tions, it has been noted that the types of local funding requests are stark
reflections of our current economic downturn. It is evident that many
schools are hurting for basic needs. The same could be said of city servic-
es such as libraries, parks and social programs. While this may not be
surprising, it highlights the fact that many community organizations and
individual volunteers are generously donating their time and resources to
bridge gaps, and they should be commended.

The Minnesota Gold Star License Plate
Governor Tim Pawlenty recently unveiled a new license plate commemo-
rating Minnesota s fallen military heroes.
The Minnesota Gold Star License Plate will be available beginning
October 1 to surviving parents and spouses of anyone who died while serving
honorably in active military service.
For all of our heroes, there must be gratitude, thanks and appreciation
that are reflected not just in our words, but in our actions, Governor
Pawlenty said. We often hear the saying, Freedom isn t free. That s true,
but we also need to add the phrase But not everybody pays the same price.
Families who ve lost a loved one deserve our love and support in every way
possible.
Governor Pawlenty signed legislation authorizing the Gold Star Plate on
May 16, 2009. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, Minnesota
Department of Military Affairs, Minnesota Department of Public Safety and
representatives from Gold Star families worked together to design the plate.
Applications for Gold Star Plates can be made by U.S. mail or at any
Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services deputy registrar office. For an appli-
cation form or an office location, visit www.mndriveinfo.org. Vehicles are sub-
ject to standard registration fees, but there will be no additional charge for
the Gold Star Plates or for replacement, should they become damaged.
Applicants will be required to provide documentation of eligibility.

Minnesota state parks offer fall try before you buy

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has a deal for visitors who can’t decide
whether to purchase the one-day permit or the year-round permit when they arrive to hike, bike, and
picnic amid the fall colors at Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.
If visitors choose the one-day permit ($5), they can turn it in before they leave for a $5 credit toward
the purchase of a year-round permit. The cost of the year-round permit would therefore be reduced
from $25 to $20.
"The year-round permit is the best deal, because it gives you and everyone in your vehicle unlim-
ited visits to all 72 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas," said Pat Arndt, manager of planning
and public affairs for the DNR's Division of Parks and Trails. "Often families have so much fun on
their first visit, they make plans to return. Allowing them to apply the price of their one-day permit
to the purchase of a year-round permit before they leave the park makes perfect sense, because it lets
newcomers 'try' before they 'buy.'"
To call attention to this special promotion, banners will be posted outside park offices through Nov.

Watch Carefully For Black Ice

cent of the population of Zambia has Aids.
Paula accompanied one boy to a hos-
pital. He had malaria but the hospital did-
n’t have the medication needed to treat it.
Efforts have been made to control Aids but
malaria is as hard to control as ever.
Going from hospital to hospital, they even-
tually found medication for the boy. But he
didn’t improve. By then, he had a second-
ary infection. He was given strong antibi-
otics and he managed to survive.
Paula was angry about the low value
placed on human life, even in hospitals.
“He had no money to pay, so it was like his
life wasn’t important.” She was also aston-
ished at the deplorable condition of the
hospitals. “There were four beds in a
room. No call lights. At one hospital, they
did feed him. If you’re hospitalized you
have to provide your own attendants and
food.” Paula monitored the boy’s IV. “I
think we care more about human life here;
consider people valuable. Human rights
aren’t very important there. There’s the
rich and poor and pretty much nothing in
between.”
Carol McBrady, who has been living
and working in Zambia for five years,
operates as a family home, not an orphan-
age. She has strong locks on the doors to
keep drug dealers out.
Carol’s only help in caring for the resi-
dent boys is one part time cook. She
makes breakfast and dinner. The boys
make supper. They usually have a corn
meal mush called shema. “Meat is usually
served on Sundays; maybe a little bit of
sausage. We had three chickens on
Christmas Day and each person got an
itty bitty bit. No half or quarter,” says
Paula.
“Zambia doesn’t celebrate Christmas,
much, but Carol does. The day after
Christmas, she invites kids in off the
streets. She gives them transportation to
the home, a shower, a meal and a new set
of clothes. Many street kids are on sticka,
a paint derivative. They smell like paint.
Carol gives them tea with sugar; sobers
them up. They play games are treated for
cuts and burns. We went through lots of
bandaids, bacitracin, and peroxide.”

without pay. “The cook was paid but she
would have come even if she wasn’t paid,”
says Paula. “Carol even gave her money

Paula hopes to go back to Zambia,
“God willing,” she says. Her own family,
husband of 40 years, Jerry, four grown
children and eight grandchildren need her,
too. She’s also expecting twin grandba-
bies at the beginning of the new year. But
the boys of Zambia have a hold on her
heart. An occasional phone call and letters
sent with Carol maintain the connection.
“We miss you, Momma Paula,” said one
boy on a recent call. The feeling is mutu-
al.

Information on the condition of the his-
toric courthouse will be presented to county
citizens in a series of public meetings. A final
decision on whether to restore or destroy the
historic courthouse will be placed on next
year's November ballot.
PAVEMENT MARKINGS
A federal safety grant has provided a
substantial amount of funding for pavement
markings this road construction season, said
County Engineer Loren Fellbaum.
Traffic Marking Services Inc of Maple
Lake, Minnesota have completed their
$261,543 contract. The federal grant paid
74 percent, or $192,716. The balance of the
contract came from state aid and local tax
dollars.
Of the 520 total miles of paved state aid
and county roads, 435 miles were painted
this year, Fellbaum said. Usually about one
quarter of the county highways are painted
each year, he said.
The six-inch wide white edge on the high-
