Direct speech is the exact words that someone uses. Its how we talk all the time. Example: Thomas said, I really want a hamburger. I really want a hamburger is exactly what Thomas said. Example: I dont want a hamburger, said Leah I dont want a hamburger is exactly what Leah said. These are also called QUOTES. Rules for Quotes 1. Capitalize first word of quote. 2. Use before and after the quote. 3. Place after the punctuation. 4. Only quote exact words. 5. Introduce quotes with commas.

Reported speech is when someone tells you something that someone else said. Its always in a past tense because it already happened earlier. Reported speech is never a quote.

Example: Thomas said that he really wanted a hamburger. The quote in introduced with the word that. The sentence and quote are in the past tense. There are no quotes because this isnt EXACTLY what Thomas said. Also, remember to change the pronouns appropriately. Example: Leah said that she didnt want a hamburger.
