New choices from age 16.

Its easy to read this and to think that you have to stay in school, but this is not the case. The school leaving age hasnt changed. Instead, you now have a number of new and different choices you can choose from once youve finished Year 11.
New choices from age 16: Raising the Participation Age This is a new Government initiative to ensure young people are better prepared for work. From September 2013 the Government changed the law so that all young people in England will have to continue in education or training beyond their 16th birthday. By giving young people the opportunity to develop the skills they need for adult life and to achieve their full potential, it will improve the level of skills available to businesses to help them to grow. Am I affected by this? If you were a student who started Year 11 in September 2012, you will need to continue in education or training until at least the end of the school year in which you turn 17. If you are currently in Year 11 or below, you will now need to continue until at least your 18th birthday. Your options You can decide to: Continue to study a FullTime course. You could choose to do this at a college, you dont need to stay at school. Go straight into Full-Time work or volunteering. If you do, you will need to combine this with Part-Time education or training. You could complete your Part-Time course at The College, or you could talk to your

YOUR OPTIONS

YOUR OPTIONS 35

The five minute interview: what are your options?

How will you know if youre making the right choices? Who do you turn to for help? Weve spoken to Nick Harris whos responsible for everything to do with 14-19 year olds.
So Im doing GCSEs this year, any advice? Yes, study hard and do the best you can! You cant get away from it, these are really important times. A good set of exam results opens up your options. Introduce yourself. Im Nick Harris, and Im the Director responsible for 14-19 year olds. I get involved with anything and everything to do with what The College offers young people, from liaising with local schools to working with curriculum areas on developing new and exciting programmes of study. Whats great about your job? The opportunity to help develop study programmes which will prepare young people to succeed at work. visit our website Find out more about us at thecollege.co.uk, on Facebook.com/BPCollege and on Twitter @BPCollege What options do I have at aged 16 surely its a choice of school or work? Absolutely not! You need to take the time now to assess what you want to do next. The issue is there are many routes available and this can create real confusion. What do you mean? For a start, the age at which you finish your education has changed. A new initiative called Raising the Participation Age (RPA) has increased the age when you finish your education from 16 to 17 from 2013 and increases again to age 18 from 2015. It doesnt mean, however, that you have to stay at school after 16, the school leaving age hasnt changed. You can now choose to remain in Full-Time education, or if you prefer you could get an Apprenticeship or a job and do a Part-Time course or specialist training. The important thing is to understand your options and to make the right decision for your future. Where does The College fit in? Were the largest single provider of education to 16-18 year olds in The Bournemouth and Poole area. We also offer the widest choice of courses available to students in the region. This means we can usually offer a study programme or Apprenticeship that suits both your current level of achievement and the career youre looking to move into. We offer a choice of both academic and vocational qualifications. What do you mean by vocational? A vocational course

prepares you for jobs in specific trades and crafts, perhaps a position in engineering, hairdressing, bricklaying, accountancy or as a chef. It will focus on a particular career path and lead to higher level qualifications or directly into a job.

programme compares against, say, an A Level. Within The College, we talk about Foundation Level, Level 1, 2, and so on. Level 2 study is the approximate equivalent to GCSE, and Level 3 is the approximate equivalent to A Levels. Have a look at the diagram on page 32 for a better explanation. How long will I be at The College? Many of our courses run for 12 months but students frequently choose to stay with us for several years, taking further levels or additional qualifications to give them the best possible start at work. You can come to The College to study at Level 1 and eventually progress onto Level 5. Tell me about Full-Time courses Full-Time courses are generally 600 hours of study over a year. How these hours are spread out depends on the course. You could be doing 16 hours a week, for 36 weeks, over 3 days a week. Or you might do

5 days a week for 20 weeks, with work experience for the remainder. All courses also require a certain amount of study time outside college.

combine work skills, work experience and functional skills (English and maths). They have been designed to prepare students for Apprenticeships. Traineeships are new and are available at The College from late 2013. Whats the difference between a teacher and a tutor? Nothing much they are basically the same. However, college tutors have advanced qualifications and vocational experience within their subject area. They are not just classroombased teachers as they will often be in workshops/ salons/kitchens developing your practical skills and competence. They also monitor your progress and development, and provide advice and help when you need it. Any final piece of advice? Thats easy. Think about what you want to do, then talk to lots of people who can answer your questions and give you advice on the best options for you

and Apprenticeships? An Apprenticeship is when you are in paid employment and study at the same time. The study element might be one day a week, or in a block. It leads to a qualification in both the subject you are studying and functional skills. Are Traineeships the same as Apprenticeships? Not quite, but they are part of the same framework. Traineeships are programmes of up to 6 months that

And academic? We offer a full range of A levels and Level 3 programmes. You can either enter directly if you have achieved the required GCSEs or progress to them through the Level 1/2 programmes at The College. What are Levels? Across the UK theres now a consistent way of comparing courses. It means its possible to see, for example, how a First Diploma get in touch

entry Criteria 37

A word about maths and English.

Theres no getting away from it, maths and English are essential skills. A good knowledge of these is a pre-requisite to so much of what we do, whether its for filling in an application form or working out how much we can afford to spend on a holiday.
Maths and English are important skills for your future. For example, a carpenter needs to use geometry when building a roof, while a designer needs to be able to understand and follow their clients instructions. They are skills you need to get into university, find a job and progress within your career. The Government has recognised this and is encouraging all students to achieve a minimum of a Level 2, equivalent to GCSE Grade A*-C in both English and maths. Our commitment to you We understand that if your maths and English skills are below par it will stop you achieving your potential. Thats why our courses are designed to give you the time and space to develop your knowledge in these subjects, should you need to, irrespective of your current level of maths or English. All our curriculum areas integrate the learning of maths and English into their programmes, and to help develop your skills you will also study them in stand-alone classes. This means that as many of our students as possible leave The College with a minimum of a Level 2 qualification in both subjects

What can the Advice and Guidance team do for me? We provide information and advice about College courses, either at one-toone sessions in schools or at our Open Events. Whether youre thinking about doing an Apprenticeship, a FullTime course, or have no idea what you want to do, we can help. Is this something you do alongside your usual job? Definitely not, this is our job! Were a team thats professionally qualified to provide Advice & Guidance, so were well placed to help - oh yes, and were really friendly and approachable! Okay, advise me. Do you suggest I do A Levels or an Apprenticeship? Its not quite as simple as that! First of all we take the time to get to know We are available to help new students, but we also support those already at The College. This is really helpful if youre thinking about a change in direction part way through a course. Is there anyone else to support me through my study? Youll have access to Learning Coaches who offer advice if youre struggling with a piece of work, or can offer a friendly ear if youre having personal problems.

In the classroom, extra support comes from teaching assistants who work alongside the tutor. Some areas also have technicians to prepare classes and work alongside students to assist them with skills development.

So what questions should I ask you? When you come along, its always handy to have thought a bit about what you want to do. For example, what were your favourite subjects at school, what are your interests and hobbies, what job/career ideas

The only time you have to pay fees are for hobby courses that dont meet the requirements of a study programme, such as cake decoration. However, these are few and far between. Are you able to help with money? Depending on individual circumstances, we offer a range of bursaries for students, but funds are limited. You can use these to help with travel costs and other course related activities. Can I work alongside my study?

do you have and where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Im worried about money, do I have to pay for my fees? If you are 16-18, you dont normally have to pay for your study. However you do have to pay for equipment, such as the uniform needed for catering, and trips required for the course.

We encourage students, where possible, to only work part-time. The number of hours you work has to be carefully balanced with whats required to successfully complete your course. If youre unsure talk to us or your tutor, were here to help. Who else could I ask? There are a few organisations that are qualified to give you Careers
