Contract drawings for insulator and conductor fittings shall in addition to the dimensions, show material types and grades, protective treatment and any other peliinent information. Paliicular attention shall be paid to those dimensions which involve inter-changeability, con-ect assembly and those for which gauges are specified. Contract drawings shall be submitted to the Owner/Engineer. Fittings shall be free from sharp edges, burrs and swarf and particular attention shall be paid to insular protective devices to prevent corona in service. The faces of flat faced fittings shall be sufficiently parallel and flat to provide a suitable contact service and remain so after fabrication. The mouth of all trunnion clamps shall be free of sharp radii of curvature, ridges or other irregularities which could lead to localised pressure or damage to the conductors, or separation of the individual strands. The contact surface of all bolted palm joints shall be scratch brushed or rough machined. In addition, care shall be taken to remove any surface contaminates prior to packing, other than material specifically introduced as a protective measure. Ball end fittings shall be free from cracks, surface flaws laminations and other defects. For factory formed helical fittings the individual rods or sub-sets of rods making up each fitting shall be tied or taped together. All insulator and conductor fittings shall be marked to ensure a system of traceability. Corona free markings shall be in accordance with the requirements oflEC 61284. In the case of factory formed helical fittings the information required above shall be provided on tear-off labels, additionally they shall be marked with paint (to an agreed colour code) either at the cross-over point or at the centre of the fitting. Installation torque values shall be stated in Newton-metres (Nm), and for compression die sizes the Inetric 'across flats' dimension of the die (e.g. 40.21) shall be used. Non-metallic materials used shall: 1 2 3 Have good resistance to ageing Be capable of withstanding service temperatures without detrimental change of properties Have adequate resistance to the effects of nitrogen oxides, ozone, ultra violet radiation and air pollution over the range of service temperatures.
Corrosion Protection

9.4

All materials used in the manufacture of insulator and conductor fittings shall be inherently resistant to atmospheric con-osion which could affect their performance. All ferrous materials, shall either be inherently resistant to atmospheric corrosion, or be suitably protected against con-osion that can occur during transportation, storage or service. All fen-ous parts which will be exposed to the atmosphere in service, except those made of the appropriate grade of stainless steel, shall be protected by hot dip galvanising in accordance with the requirelnents of BS EN ISO 1461. Zinc thickness on forged components shall not be less than 85 microns. All external threads shall be cut or rolled before hot-dipped galvanising. Nuts to be galvanised shall be subsequently tapped 0.4 mm oversize and the threads oiled. The rough machined contact surfaces of partial tension clamps and line termination fittings shall be protected with a removable dry weatherproof coating after manufacture.
