introduction

On 01.01.01 Boris Zeisser and Maartje Lammers founded 24H>architecture in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Maartje Lammers was born in 1963 and graduated from Technical University of Delft in 1988. Boris Zeisser was born 1968 and graduated from Technical University of Delft with honourable mention in 1995. Before starting their own ofce Boris Zeisser and Maartje Lammers worked in several well-known architectural ofces like (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects, Mecanoo and the Ofce for Metropolitan Architecture (Rem Koolhaas). Since its inception 24H>architecture has been involved in various sized projects. Recently a number of projects have been realized, among which are the Ichthus Academy in Rotterdam, a kids den and ecological school in Thailand, the interior for two Youth Hostels in London, the Dragspelhuset at vre Gla, Sweden, several exhibitions, the ofce of Rijkswaterstaat in Assen and various housing projects in Nieuw Vennep, Hoogvliet and Hoofddorp along with the refurbishments of a former spinning mill into ofces in Enschede. The 12 people strong international team of 24H currently work on a broad scope of design tasks: several housing projects in Cadzand, Domburg and Rotterdam, several schools, an environmental education centre, a saltstorage building and eco resorts in the Caribbean and Morocco.

design statement

24H goal is to nd the hidden layers of each commission. Next to program and site, these undiscovered layers make the answer to each design. By working with various themes guiding the design process, a broad spectrum of non-architectural solutions is found.

evolution
adaptable structures in time providing multi program use in a single space

natrued
abstract interpretations of nature petried into building materials

organism
growing additions transform existing buildings into new compositions

art deco
supporting environment as well as beauty makes the art of ecology

sensibility
to arouse the senses, a building should age beautifully by using materials with a natural ability to transform during its lifetime

Assen, The Netherlands

At the border of an english landscape park in the city of Assen, an environmental education centre will be developed for the municipality. The programm includes ofces, exhibition spaces, a restaurant and facilities for the neighbouring childrens farm.
The ecological approach is visualized in the integration of the surrounding landscape and the building, mimimizing its footprint. The northern part of the roof blends into an animal eld, while the southern part of the roof contains theme gardens for visitors. These two green sloping roofs meet at the top of the buiding, where the visitors meet the animals next to the solar tower. This tower functions as a look out tower, landmark and provides the building of natural ventilation. Natural energy sources are utilized like solar warmth & power, cooling capacaties of the neighbouring lake and bio mass of the childrens farm next door.

Kunsthal, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The ever present movable walls of the Kunsthal Hal 1 are arranged in a double representation of a spine, creating three different spaces.
The rst space is tted as a jungle, with a meandering path of thick mushy rubber and abstract vine structures of cloth. The atmosphere is dark and mysterious; the walls are painted in an abstract jungle pattern. In here you will nd the moving animatronics, giant fake dinosaurs of all sorts, roaring and moving in the dim light. In the eye of the two curved walls is a sacral night atmosphere created for the skeleton of a gigantic Triceratops. From there the visitor walks along the fossil graveyard towards the ltered daylight. In here, you nd a sand pit in which you can dig for dinosaur fossils like a real palaeontologist. The glass faade is covered with a translucent lm with a jungle collage, taking the view of the park in as part of the exhibition.

Special moments of the tour history were shown by using specic cycling objects, legendary pictures, interviews and showing newspaper articles on display. These various tour themes were shown on a continuous wall that is placed on top of a special oor covering with the route of the Tour de France 2010. At various locations visitors can use bicycles and for example climb the Alpe dHuez or sprint over cobble stone pavement. Furthermore, you can also design your own yellow jersey or take place on a massage table. An interactive family exhibition that shown the various facets of the greatest cycling event.

DESIGN

The Peckham Square is the main public space in the Peckham neighbourhood, with a specic and strong ambiance through the building of the Peckham library designed by Will Alsop.
In order to be visible and present on the square, it is necessary for the relatively small pavilion to have a strong and original appearance. Typical aspects of violence and insecurity in the area have led to the main starting point of the design. During the day, the pavilion is opened up by moving the different pieces of the three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle apart. During the night the pavilion can be closed in order to form an inaccessible alien stone that is lit from within.

The design for Schlossberg, in the centre of the south German city of Bblingen creates an icon, a monument of the future, intertwined with the existing city.
Present textures of the urban squares on either side of the hill; Marktplatz and Postplatz, are growing towards each other transforming where they meet into a new glass shape. This two-dimensional concept is translated into the third dimension, creating a new urban texture and new volumes that shape the building. The diverse programme of museum, day care centre, city hall, restaurant and citizen centre is split into three separate volumes. These volumes are connected by a large entry hall, which allows the building to be used as a whole or as individual volumes. The new building is a landmark for its environment, while forming a unity with the structure of the city. It draws itself next to the existing church building, commincating with its environment. Going around the Schlossberg, the presence of the new museum tower can be felt, but is never dominant.

2005

Kunsthal, Rotterdam, The Nether-

Design for exhibition Masters of Dutch Romance 1800-1850 in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
The exhibition was a cooperation between the Kunsthal and the Rijksmuseum from Amsterdam. Director Ronald de Leeuw of the Rijksmuseum was guestcurator and traced together with Benno Tempel of the Kunsthal over the last 4 years an impressive collection of Romantic paintings. 24H-architecture was invited to make a design proposal for the exhibition. Within the Romantic movement a trend is noticeable from a narrow-minded point of view towards freedom; nature and the force of nature where important sources of inspiration. This contrast was the most important source of inspiration for the design and was therefore made visible in the layout of the exhibition: on one side of the exhibition hall a living room was created with benches, chandeliers, walls with romantic wallpaper and a row of portraits. On the other side of the exhibition space the exuberant nature is represented by a sculptural rock that forms a staircase to the next exhibition hall, tree trunks and branches form a hand railing. The walls are covered with colored lycra and with hidden under the cloth antlers of elk and deer, stuffed birds, shells and pineapples. Most of the objects are placed on the side of the exuberant nature, while towards the living room the objects shrink until they disappear totally. This is related to the selected paintings. 4 tracks with 4 sub-themes bridge the two extremes in the exhibition. At the side of the living room the walls are placed in a straightforward fashion, while towards the nature side of the exhibition the walls follow a wilder pattern, with diagonal views though the exhibition. In this way the visitor is not forced into on of the paths, but is free to wonder through the exhibition, helped in his orientation by the colors of the walls underlining the different themes. The newly build temporary stairs connects to HAL 3 of the Kunsthal, which contains the second part of the exhibition with oil-paint sketches and drawings of the Romantic artists. Within the routing of the Kunsthal, the stairs provide in an otherwise missing link. As nal experience the visitor is treated on a chill out room with furniture of Tord Boontje and a big replace projected on the wall.
