onc ol two that makc up thc gcnus Rhizophora and consists
ol thrcc spccics (two bcing closcly allicd), R. mucronata, R.
stylosa, and R. apiculata, and two hybrids, R. lamarckii
and R. annamalai.
Stilt mangrovcs thrivc undcr a rangc ol intcrtidal condi
tions, including a rangc ol salinity lcvcls lrom ncar lrcsh
watcr to lull strcngth scawatcr. Tcy tolcratc a rangc ol
ooding rcgimcs, soil typcs, and othcr physical sitc lactors.
Typically, thcsc mangrovcs arc common in thc midintcr
tidal zonc, and particularly along thc scaward margin ol
tropical mangrovc stands.
Rhizophora arc considcrcd thc most important ol all man

always tcll thcm apart using this charactcr. Tis
may bc cxplaincd by a progrcssivc lcngthcning
ol thc stylc in R. stylosa, corrcsponding possibly
with its morc rcccnt introduction in locations
with longcr stylcs. !l this is corrcct, R. stylosa
has sprcad lrom Australia and Fcdcratcd Statcs
ol Microncsia both wcstward and castward,
lor cxamplc, in Sulawcsi and Fiji whcrc stylc
lcngths arc thc longcst rccordcd. Tis idca con
