What is Lavlatul Qadr!
It has been rendered The Niht ot Destiny, Niht ot Power, Niht ot Value, the Niht ot Decree and the Niht ot Mea
sures. All titles, yet none sutticient enouh to convey its siniticance. Allah in tact poses the question 'Arc uiot cor oi.
,ou irou uiot :s ti. N:it o, D.cr..!' (97:2) expressin our incapability to comprehend this one niht without the uid
ance ot his words. These words are tound within a Quranic verse (AlQader) dedicated entirely to this one niht.

Allah explains to us one reliious siniticance ot this niht is it is the one in which the Quran was reviled. Many promi
nent Muslim scholars, includin Ibn 'Abbas (Ra), have explained that there were two staes to the revelation ot the
Quran. The occurrence in Laylatul Qadar is the tirst stae in which Allah caused the Quran, in its entirety, to descend
trom His Protected Tablet (alLawh alMahtuth) to the lowest heaven reterred to as 'Bayt al'Izzah' (The House ot Honor
or Power). From here the second stae ot revelation occurred in which the Quran came to the Prophet (PBLH) in se
ments relevant to events that occurred durin the 23 years ot his prophethood.

Allah illustrates the true importance ot the niht by dictatin that it is preterred to him over a thousand ordinary
months. Theretore worshipin Him on this niht in pure devotion can be more beneticial than 83 years and + months
ot prayin. $ubhanAllah This duration is loner than the averae lite expectancy ot any nation includin ]apan (82.6
years).
When is Lavlatul Qadr!
LLaylatul Qadr is to be tound in the last tive odd nihts ot the 3rd decade ot Ramadan. There is no history in the Quran
as to when the specitic date is and the accounts reardin $unnah ditter on the issue. However we do know its dura
tion, From dusk till dawn 'It's oii P.oc..... urt:i ti. r:s. o, cour' (97:5).
Note. that in the Islamic calendar the 21st niht means the niht that tollows the day number 20.
Tryin to calculate which niht is the true niht ot Layaltul Qadr is an unnecessary hustle and danerous as it may lead
one to miss it altoether. The prophet (PBLH) has been narrated to worship in all the tinal 10, includin the even
nihts. $ome scholars suest the wisdom behind this lies in the tact that the Prophet (PBLH) had toreseen that Mus
lims would ditter on the issue ot the commencement ot Ramadan and did not want them miss Laylatul Qadr by wor
shipin on even nihts and sleepin throuh the odd ones due lunar pattern miscalculations.
What is to be done on Lavlatul Qadr!
This one niht literally is the opportunity ot 'a lite time'. We need to remember that proper worship can help us earn
the rewards ot more than 83 years ot continual prayer. Our prophet used to pertorm 'I'tikat' - i.e. devote the end ot his
Ramadan to the pure remembrance ot Ood by stayin in the mosque tor the entirety ot 10 nihts. Practically this is
really ditticult tor most ot us students. However, we should not let our incapability to worship at this level demoralise us.
Instead we should be motivated to pertorm extra worship knowin that anythin pertormed on Layatul Qadr will earn
us a us a tentold ot the reward with the permission ot Ood. We need to use this motivation to tirstly pertorm your oblia
tory worship includin prayin, tastin, ivin zakat and pertormin that which is just, and secondly, to pertorm extra
prayers (particularly the niht prayer) join in 'tiwlah' (readin quran) and to remember Ood.
Here in Melbourne we are blessed with longer nights and thus better opportunities to make the most of the end of
Ramadan. So as the end of this Ramadan approaches upon the Islamic Lmmah, In Sha Allah we too can celebrate
bv turningup our own lanterns and joining the believers in making the most of Lavlatul Qadr.

Lavlatul Qadr
From its verv beginning the lunar month of Ramadan is one that attracts a flood of excitement from
Islamic communities. Yet, evervthing comes to an end and so vou mav expect the vibe that allows
Muslims to escalate spirituallv to dwindle, paralleling the phasic patterns of the waning crescent
moon. However, this could not be further from the truth.
LLpon embarking the last davs of Ramadan the lanterns illuminating Muslim households shine bright
er and longer than ever. In fact it is the last ten davs in particular that believers long for with the
greatest of anticipation. Within these nights is the holiest time of the vear the time of Lavlatul Qadr.
