Language Arts: We began a new unit in Language Arts focusing on having fun and creative ideas. Last week we talked about Dr. Seuss and rhyming words. We had fun reading his books and creating our own rhymes. This week we focused on inventions and read a story about some children creating a robot from trash. Most of our Language Arts time continues to go to phonics development and then our center time, when we focus on reading, writing, and word work.

For the last few weeks we have begun a new incentive program in our class. We read the book, My Mouth is a Volcano and talked about how we can just erupt with words and sometimes actions that we should have held in. The class now has a volcano chart. Each child has three volcanoes, which gives them three chances before they move down. Instead of our three color chart we now have a multicolor chart. The class all begins on green each day (the middle ready to learn!) and they can move up to gray (very good!), blue (excellent!) or purple (amazing!). They move up by making good choices throughout the day. If they lose all three volcanoes they will move down to yellow (think!), three more lost is orange (teachers choice) and three more lost is red (call parents). Please look now for the color check that your child ends on. No worries if its just green! Thats still a great day. Let me know if you have questions. Spelling words come from the letter and syllable combinations we are studying for the week. This coming week will be the soft r, which means that it is NOT rolled. It is like the r in English, just softer. These rs are always in the middle of words. If a word starts with an r, it is always rolled. The other letter is h, which is silent in Spanish. We always cover our mouths in class when there is an h.
