Question 5
(a) Indicate the effect on the COD test results of the following conditions and
briefly explain why:
(i) Mercuric sulphate was not added
(ii) Silver sulphate was not added
(iii) The ferrous ammonium sulphate was assumed to have the same
normality as it did two weeks prior to the current analysis.

(b) The concentration of ultimate BOD in a river entering the first of two lakes
that are connected in series is equal to 20mg/L. If the first-order BOD
reaction rate constant (K1) equals 0.35d
-1
and complete mixing occurs in each
lake, what is the concentration of ultimate BOD at the outlet of each lake? The
flow in the river is equal to 4000 m
3
/d and the volume of the first and second
lake is 20,000 and 12,000 m
3
respectively. Assume steady-state conditions and
prove any formula used.

Question 6
(a) How does the self-purification of a stream occur when it has been polluted by
the discharge of a wastewater into it?

(b) A wastewater treatment plant for a textile dyeing factory receives a flow of
12500m

/d at a BOD5 of 280mg/L. Effluent from the plant is discharged into
a stream which has a flow of 1.0m
3
/s, at a BOD5 of 2mg/L and a dissolved
oxygen concentration of 9.0mg/L. If the BOD5 of the stream immediately
below the outfall is not to exceed 4.0 mg/L,
(i) What is the maximum BOD5 which may be permitted in the plant
effluent and what would be the required percentage BOD5 removal
efficiency of the treatment plant?

(ii) What is the critical DO concentration in the stream?

(a) Explain the rational method used in estimating runoff, stating all assumptions
that are made.

(b) Design a circular sewer outfall of the separate system for a town with a
population of 100000 persons. The sewer can be laid at a slope of 1 in 1000.
The dry weather flow may be taken as

assumptions made. The appropriate Nomograph and table of proportionate
values of hydraulic elements are provided.

runoff to three manholes: A to manhole 1, B to manhole 2 and C to manhole 3.
The inlet time from each area is 6 minutes, 8 minutes and 20 minutes
respectively. All areas have an average runoff coefficient of 0.5. The direction
of flow is from manhole 1 to manhole 2 to manhole 3 and out. The time of
flow between MH is 5 minutes. The relation of rainfall intensity to time is
