11:45-12:30: Morning Meditation with Shizu Homma: All are welcome to participate in this all levels insight meditation experience. We will practice observing our thoughts and being in the present. Beginners will get an introduction, the experienced will be able to sit in a community and share their practice. 1-2:45: Know Your Cervix, Love Your Body with El Tarver: This workshop will delve into the techniques and practices of cervical/vaginal self-exam and care, building on the work of feminist predecessors who asserted that knowledge is power when it comes to making choices about our bodies. We will deconstruct the step-by-step of a GYN exam, from breasts/chest to pelvis, and give you some basic tools to feel more empowered in your own reproductive healthcare. We will discuss embodied experiences of our bodies and health, sex/sexuality, vaginal ecology, and much more. You will receive a self-exam kit (speculum, mirror, ashlight, and written instructions) and there will be an *optional* demo at the end, with an opportunity to self-examine your own cervix in the group setting, OR do it in the privacy of your own home with provided supplies and instructions. 3-5 Writing the Family with Emily Brandt: The goal of this workshop would be to express family struggles, traumas, and/or strengths through poetry in ways that are fresh and vivid. The workshop would include brief readings from poets, including Rachel Zucker, Sharon Olds, Yusef Komunyakaa, and other poets who address the family as subject. Using these texts as models and inspiration, participants would craft their own poems. The class would begin with a collaborative writing exercise to introduce and connect participants and would end with time for writers to share their work, or excerpts from their work. 5:15-7 Intentional Adornment with Juliet Silva Yee, Mensen and others TBA: This playful, hands-on workshop celebrates the multi-faceted, multicultural practice of facial and body decoration. An open dialogue will explore beauty, spiritual rites, camouage, ritual and other reasons women have engaged in this practice throughout history. One of many stereotypes about feminism is that we all believe makeup and self-adornment are patriarchal constructs that lead to internalized oppression and self-objectication. In this workshop, we reject this notion, and instead celebrate a spirit of intentional self-adornment as a feminine expression of power. During the workshop, each participant will adorn and decorate themselves in an elaborately personally and culturally meaningful way, and have their portrait shot by a professional photographer. This portrait will be printed and installed for the rest of the show, and posted on our blog.
