Amayrani Nunez February 20, 2014 6th Period Poem Analysis When one thing doesnt go the way

you want, you always wish for other situations to flow better than others. In the poem Waiting by Peggy McNally, the speaker describes an ordinary day in a substitute teachers life and how she patiently and hopefully awaits for a sort of a new beginning. However, the author goes into deeper detail on the wait that takes place. To present an impression of waiting in the reading, McNally applies the use of detail of yearning for an exciting experience to occur in the womans life, and describes her reminiscing of the past to depict her prolonging desire for the future to come. While the author successfully provides detail, he also demonstrates the sense of waiting by the hastening of the speaker through the imagery provided in the poem. McNally utilizes detail to depict the womans prolonging to what the future holds which is later mentioned what she expects it to be. she remembers her date last night (McNally line 6). The unnamed woman in the poem appears to be remembering a date that had come about the night before as she is going through her daily routine of her tedious day at school. This demonstrates how the womans commemoration shows that she wants something more out of it. If she didnt want any more out of the situation, she would have not remembered at all from night to day; therefore, the last night becoming the reason of her waiting on a development of something more exciting than her usual daily routines. Additionally, the author portrays her wistfulness through the implemental of anticipating detail about what the woman wishes in behalf of her banal ordinary life. and hopes it might

lead to other things, maybe love (McNally line 7). The author reveals that the woman is in hope to receive some sort of romance and excitement. She is spiritless of her same old routine of being a substitute teacher and driving her fathers antique car to her low paid job. This declares that the woman clearly expects love or some type of bonding affection with her date from the night before; thus, depicting her wait on the dates call. If she wasnt waiting on her date to continue on with the friendship, then she would have not even thought about the date manifesting into something greater. Consequently, it shows how she is prolonging on that exciting moment of her life to establish a new companionship that will make up for her ordinary life as a substitute teacher. Furthermore, the imagery of how the woman rushes herself to complete a task shows the resemblance of her being tired of waiting for something. so she quickens her pace towards the main office (McNally line 8). The woman rushes her pace towards the office after she realizes she was deluding about her eagerness of love. Her day, as usual, seemed to be flowing slowly and her prolonging for love made it seem slower. If she didnt hasten her pace, then she still would have been deluding in her head of the love that she is awaiting for. This demonstrates that the woman is prolonging on the fact that by quickening her pace, her desire will come to her quicker.
