THE ANCIENT NOVGORODSKAYA PSALTIR FROM THE 11TH

CENTURY AND MONUMENTS THE ANCIENT BULGARIAN
EPIGRAPHIC FROM THE 10-11TH CENTURIES

Summary
The author focuses on the most ancient wooden book of the 1st third of
eleventh century, found in Novgorod in 2000. Due to the contents of the text,
survived on the wax pages, this book was named Novgorodskaya psaltir.
Detailed analysis of the paleography of these texts in a broad ancient slavic
context is given in the article. Ancient slavic manuscripts are put in parallel with
the text, dealt with in the article; so are ancient Russian inscriptions and graffitis
of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century from Sophia (cathedral)
of Kiev and Novgorod, birch-bark documents of the same period and ancient
Bulgarian cyrillic scripts of 10-11th centuries. Special attention is given to
paleography of texts on lead plate-formed amulets from Eastern Bulgaria, which
contain magic apocryphal prayers against illnesses ("nezhit", "trjasavitsa").
As the author states, these are these texts which contain the closest
analogs to the inscriptions in Novgorodskaya psaltir. The author supposes that,
besides being influenced by South slavic manuscripts, the formation of the most
ancient writing principles was also influenced by graphic and orthographic
tradition of ancient Bulgarian inscriptions, primarily by those found in the texts
on the amulets of the 10-11th centuries. The signs of this tradition can be found
not only in Novgorodskaya psaltir, but also in some ancient Russian texts derived
not from books (graffiti and birch-bark documents). By the end of 11th - the
beginning of the 12th century the ancinet Bulgarian signs in epigraphics of
Ancient Russia has been treated as archaic.
