Operating System Collector Overview

It is necessary to check the status of the SAP Operating System Performance Collector (SAPOsCol) before performance tuning. It is recommended that the SAPOsCol be turned on a few days before performance monitoring. The operating system collector consists of the program SAPOsCol which is a stand-alone program that runs in the operating system background independently of the R/3 instances. SAPOsCol collects data regarding operating system resources (virtual memory, physical memory, CPU, storage management, physical disk, and network) and makes this data available to all R/3 instances on one host through shared memory. A dialog work process reads the data from the shared memory. The following examples show you how to check the status of the SAP Operating System Collector (SAPOsCol) and how turn the collector on before performance tuning. You should typically start the Monitor on your central host system which is normally the host system upon which the database is running. If you are logged onto the SAP instance running on host X, for example, then host X will be monitored.

Ensure That the SAPOsCol Service is Scheduled and Active

Before examining System Performance, you should ensure that the SAPOsCol is running. The function of the SAPOsCol is to collect all related performance data for SAP, the Database, and the Operating System. If the SAPOsCol does not run, then the snapshot of system performance is not accurate. 1. To go to the SAP R/3 CCMS Performance Monitoring window follow the path Tools Administration Computer Center Management System Control Performance Menu. Alternative:

2. In order to check if the SAPOsCol is running, follow the path Operating System Local Activity. Alternative:

If the SAPOsCol is running , then the status window will be generated. If Status is not running, then follow steps 5 and 6 to start the SAPOsCol. 5. Click Start. 6. Click the Status button.

This window contains a generated status report.

The SAP OS Collector has to be running before Performance Tuning can be done. It is recommended to start the SAP OS Collector a few days prior to any performance tuning. 7. The SAP OS Collector should be running. If it is not then you must start it (follow steps 5 & 6).
