Q: I have a wooden box that I suspect is a World War I ammunition
box. It is about 20-by-26-by-10 inches with iron hinges and rope
handles. One end is marked 20-1917. There is stenciling on the top, and
despite the fact that it has faded, I don't want to clean it much for fearing
I will lose what's left of it. Is this worth anything? I have had it in my
basement since about 1950. -- Bob, Pittsford, N.Y.
A: I contacted an expert about your box. Jeff Albiniak, a military
collector based in Tucson, Ariz., said that your box is, indeed, a WWI-
era ammunition box. According to Jeff, the standard ammo box from this
period was more often than not nicely crafted, usually of oak, with
dovetailed ends and hinged top. He said you should not clean it, since
that might destroy its value, which he places it in the $30 to $50 range.

graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort
Knox, Ky., which included basic combat training and advanced
individual training (AIT).
During the first nine weeks of initial entry training
(IET), the trainee completed basic combat training which
included instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons,
marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field
training and tactical exercises, marches, military courtesy,
military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history,
traditions, and core values.
During AIT, the soldier completed the armor crewman
course to receive skill training in conducting tank unit
defensive and offensive combat operations. The soldier was
trained to operate, service and maintain armor tracked and
wheeled vehicles, load and fire tank weapon systems, perform
ammunition handling and supply duties, and assist in target
detection and identification.
