Laur 4th Hour Underlying Cause of WW1 The assassination of one man led to one of the biggest wars. This mans name was Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The war that he triggered lated for four years from 1914 to 1918. In the 19th century European leaders thought if creating a balance of power, or an even distribution, that they could prevent such a horror. This idea was that if major powers like England, France, Russia, United States, and Germany were balanced in strength then no country could take over the rest. One thing led to another and started war and 10 millions lives were lost. Alliances, militarism, and imperialism were the three that that underlined the causes of WW1. Of theses imperialism is the most important. First, ne underlying cause of WW1 was alliances. In document A the map shows the alliances of Europe in 1914. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy were part of the triple alliance. Italy switches sides and fights with the triple entente. Therefore, it was now 4 vs. 2 on the triple alliance. Another alliance group was called the Triple Entente. This group were considered the innocent ones. The countries included, Germany which had two fonts with Russia and France. The last alliance was the neutral nations which included Norway with Sweden, Spain and Portugal, Greece, Ottoman Empire, etc. These countries shown in document A stayed neutral throughout the war. In document B shows an article about The Crime of Ages. Who Did It? The crime in the image symbolizes The Peace of Europe is dead. The chain of events in document B show that every country was against Germany besides Austria and Servia who were against each other and Italy stayed neutral. These alliances were either going to gain control or weaken their countries.

In document C shows a graph from The London Times History of the World edited by Richard Overy in 1999. The graph shows The Growth in Armaments from 1890 to 1914 from the countries. It shows the amount of men who were in the army and navy. The document shows that it is good to ulid your military so you can defend yourself because alliances can betray you and that they cant be trusted. Document D shows a letter from Bernhard Von Bulow, German Chancellor, who spoke this speech before the German congress. Von Bulow worried about France, England, and Russia because they are all acquiring colonies. The document also shows that Germany will be a hammer or an anvil, a heavy steel iron block which metal can be hammered and shaped. Theses documents show that alliances can betray you and that militarism is stronger than alliances. Lastly, the most important cause of WW1 was imperialism. In document E shows a German propaganda cartoon in 1917. This was The British Octopus called Freedom of the Sea. The octopus symbolizes Britain. This image was meant to make Britain look bad. Document F shows the size of colonial empires in 1913. Compared to the rest of the countries, Britain controlled most of the world. Austria-Hungary and Russia had none. Although the countries fought no reason for WW1, there were a lot of cause that led to it. Such as alliances, militarism, and imperialism which were the underlying causes. Alliances were who wanted what for countries. Militarism was stronger than alliances because they could betray you. Last was imperialism which was taking world resources and where Britain controlled most of the world.
