1. Scope of Service
1.1 About BoxCryptor
BoxCryptor is an encryption software optimized for cloud storage. With BoxCryptor you can easily encrypt your data before it is stored in the cloud. To secure your files, BoxCryptor uses AES-256 standard, which is approved for top secret documents by the US government1. BoxCryptor is easy and transparent to use: BoxCryptor creates a virtual drive and all files stored in this drive are automatically encrypted and stored. When opening files in the virtual drive, BoxCryptor decrypts them in real-time so that they are accessible like any other unencrypted file. File-by-File encryption: BoxCryptor works on individual files at a time and not on container files. That means no need to resize volumes and no problems to synchronize or backup individual files!

1.2 About this manual

This manual describes how to use BoxCryptor on Mac OS. Unless specified otherwise, the described functionality always refers to the version of BoxCryptor indicated in the title. Mac OS is a registered trademark of Apple Inc. Linux is a registered trademark of Linux Foundation. The terms "Microsoft" and "Windows" used here are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries. For simplification purposes, this manual refers to the operating systems Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows 8 as Windows.

2. Installation
2.1 Installing BoxCryptor
After downloading the BoxCryptor.dmg from our homepage, open the file and double click on the installation program. It will guide you through the whole installation process. Make sure you have admin rights on this machine because we need to install a driver to the system. 1. Create a New Encrypted Folder An encrypted folder is a regular folder where BoxCryptor will store encrypted files. Choose the cloud provider of your choice in the setup wizard, or select a custom path for your folder. Now you can enter a name for your encrypted folder. Later you can connect your mobile Devices or other Computers to this direction. 2. Create Password You can type in the password which should be at least 6 characters including numbers and symbols. After you have set up everything you can change your password from the BoxCryptor main window. IMPORTANT: BoxCryptor is zero-knowledge software and we do not keep any personal information or passwords, which means that it is absolutely not possible to restore or reset your password in case you lost it. If you forget the password the data on the encrypted files will be lost. 3. Congratulations! Now you have created a new encrypted folder! Simply store your private files in the corresponding BoxCryptor drive and BoxCryptor will encrypt your data. IMPORTANT: Make sure to create a backup of your configuration file - which has the information required for encrypting and decrypting your data- and keep a copy on a safe place.

2.2 Licensing BoxCryptor Unlimited

Why should I license BoxCryptor? With licensing BoxCryptor you are able to enable filename encryption. This feature will encrypt the names of your files and folder. This adds an extra layer of security because an attacker wont be able to get information about the content through the name. Furthermore a licensed version of BoxCryptor will allow you to have different pairs of encrypted folders and virtual drives running at the same time. This is useful if you want to share a folder with another person, but not your private files. Moreover, using the Free BoxCryptor version in a business context is not allowed. Licensing Run BoxCryptor after the installation. You can see the BoxCryptor icon in your system tray. Right click on the BoxCryptor icon and choose Preferences to show the BoxCryptor main menu. If you have already bought a BoxCryptor Unlimited license go to step 5 else start with step 1: 1. Click on Buy Now Online. 2. Your Browser opens and you can choose the Unlimited License you want. 3. Type in your personal information and make sure your email address is correct. Your license key will be sent to this email. 4. After you have received the email with your BoxCryptor Unlimited license open the BoxCryptor main menu again and choose Enter Serial Number. After choosing the correct version and typing in your license key your BoxCryptor license will be activated.

3. Setup and basic functionality

3.1 Setting up the first computer
If you are running BoxCryptor the first time a setup wizard appears and will guide you through the setup process.
6

1. Welcome to BoxCryptor First of all a new encrypted directory has to be created so choose Create a new encrypted folder. 2. Create a new encrypted folder in your Magic Briefcase First you have to choose a location where your new encrypted folder should be stored. Select a location and choose a name for your folder. All your encrypted files will be stored there.

3. Create a password BoxCryptor secures the encrypted files with a password. Here you can type in a password which should be at least 6 characters including numbers and symbols. It is also possible to let BoxCryptor remember your password so you dont have to type in the password every time BoxCryptor starts. The bar below the first text field indicates the password strength.

4. Congratulations Now your new encrypted folder is created!

3.2 Setting up further computers

After you have set up BoxCryptor on your first computer you can now set up further computers to access your encrypted data from them. First check if the cloud service has synced the whole BoxCryptor folder to your computer. Now install BoxCryptor and follow the setup process: 1. Welcome to BoxCryptor To access your encrypted data you have to choose your already existing BoxCryptor directory so choose Open an encrypted folder. This will open a finder window, navigate to Documents -> MySugarSync (if you use SugarSync, otherwise chose the folder of your cloud storage provider) and select your previously created BoxCryptor folder.

2. Enter Password To access your encrypted data type in the correct password you have typed in before. You can check Remember this password to let BoxCryptor remember the password so you dont have to type in the password every time BoxCryptor starts.

3.3 Using BoxCryptor

After setting up BoxCryptor it is very easy to work with encrypted data. The BoxCryptor drive BoxCryptor provides a virtual hard drive which is essentially to encrypt and decrypt your data. Open your finder and youll see it in the devices section just like a regular external drive. Per default there is also a shortcut placed on your desktop. Encrypt data To encrypt data just save your files and folders in the BoxCryptor drive. You can also drag and drop files and folders into your BoxCryptor drive. BoxCryptor will automatically encrypt your data on the fly. After the Encryption your encrypted data will be synced to the storage provider of your choice. Decrypt data Your files are always securely encrypted and are only be decrypted on your local machine by using BoxCryptor. Only by using the BoxCryptor drive you

can see your decrypted data and work with it like any other data on your pc. Warning This process will only work if you use our drive to access your files. It will fail if you copy files directly to the BoxCryptor folder in your magic briefcase. Check if everything is setup correctly To make sure everything works as expected, create a text file in the BoxCryptor Drive. It will get encrypted instantly, to check this open the encrypted folder. Since we treat the folder as a bundle, right click it and then select show contents. Open the file to see that the content is encrypted.

3.4 The BoxCryptor Main Window

To get access to several settings or to change your encrypted folder you can open the BoxCryptor Main Window. Right click on the little padlock action bar and then click preferences.

10

The setup wizard will open and guides you through the process. For details you can also see chapter 3.1. Open To open an existing encrypted folder click here. The setup wizard will open and guides you through the process. For details you can also see chapter 3.2.

4. Advanced Mode
In Advanced Mode BoxCryptor provides you more options to set up your encrypted drive. With BoxCryptor Unlimited it is also possible to set up multiple encrypted folders and drives.

4.1 New Advanced Settings

If you run the wizard for a new encrypted folder you will be able to set up advanced options at the end of the wizard:

11

Label for the BoxCryptor drive Here you can type in the label of the BoxCryptor drive. Mount as local disc BoxCryptor automatically detects if your encrypted folder is stored on a hard- or network drive and thus creates the virtual drive. To force BoxCryptor to always mount as hard drive you can check this option. Mount for all users If checked BoxCryptor mounts this drive for all users. This is especially required for some system services like sharing over network and windows search. These services are run under the SYSTEM user, which has to see your drive. Enable filename encryption If checked BoxCryptor also encrypts your file- and folder names. Otherwise they will be saved in plain text. This option is only available in the Unlimited version Enable Spotlight If checked BoxCryptor will be automatically mounted as fixed drive and for all users. This feature will enable the usage of the spotlight search from Mac OS.
12

Enable key validation By default, BoxCryptor refuses to mount an encrypted directory if the password provided is not correct. With this option it is possible to disable this validation and use BoxCryptor with secondary passwords. Users can then have separate sets of files in the same encrypted folder. Because BoxCryptor does not display files whose name did not decrypt properly, only the files for the given password are shown. If you change your primary password, the secondary ones will not work until the primary password is the same as before! By default this option is checked. For experts: Use an alternative configuration file If you like to store the configuration file outside the encrypted folder you can check this option and choose the location where to store the configuration file. Important: By storing the configuration elsewhere than the root of your encrypted folder the mobile BoxCryptor apps are no longer supported!
