)hank you $or generously 'olunteering your time to hel# in our library2 )he Weatherly Heights Library is a busy #lace &ith lots o$ e.cellent resources and materials $or our students and sta$$( 3our #resence is 'ery much a##reciated and in'aluable in su##orting our library #rogram throughout the year( )his handbook is designed to outline the #rocedures &e $ollo& in circulating and shel'ing library materials( Each task is organi4ed under a se#arate heading( Should you ha'e any 5uestions% #lease do not hesitate to ask( Library Hours 6 Scheduling Library Hours 7onday - 8riday 9,4: - 2,4: Scheduling )he #lan is to ha'e t&o #eo#le scheduled at all times in order to allo& at least one #erson at the desk and one #erson shel'ing and organi4ing( ;lease #lan to &ork the entire slot you $or &hich you are scheduled( )he schedule is designed to #ro'ide the best #ossible co'erage $or the library( )he time you 'olunteer is im#ortant( )his year% Weatherly Library is utili4ing VolunteerS#ot as our #re$erred method o$ scheduling 'olunteer shi$ts( 7orning co'erage is 'itally im#ortant% as &ell as 8riday a$ternoons2 "bsences -$ you need to cancel% #lease try to arrange a substitute $rom the 'olunteer list( -$ you are unable to $ind a substitute% #lease let 7s( !obson kno& at least 1 day ahead i$ at all #ossible( We understand that this &ill not al&ays be #ossible /illnesses ne'er seem to $it nicely into our schedules20% and in those circumstances% <ust call the o$$ice and lea'e a message $or 7s( !obson( ;erks "s a 'olunteer% you ha'e the #ri'ilege o$ borro&ing books( )hey &ill be due back a$ter 2 &eeks% but may be rene&ed i$ there is not a &aiting list

S-=>--> When you arri'e% #lease sign-in at the 1$$ice( 3ou &ill be gi'en a school 'isitor #ass to be &orn $or the duration o$ your 'isit( ;lease acce#t this in a s#irit o$ concern $or the &el$are o$ our students( *L"SS SESS-1>S E'ery &eek% each ;re-?-2nd grade class comes to the library $or 30 minutes( Students in grades 3-: come bi&eekly $or :0 minutes( Students &ill #artici#ate in a literature and@or library skills lesson during the $irst #art o$ class% and then &ill ha'e an o##ortunity to bro&se and select books that they &ill bring to the circulation desk( "$ter checking out their books% students should read 5uietly in a designated area(

VOLUNTEER TASKS !uties and Aes#onsibilities Regular Duties *hecks books in and out to students and sta$$ - see +Library *irculation+ $or more details Shel'e books - see +Shel'ing ooks+ $or more details Shel$-read - this means reading across shel'es one book at a time to make sure all books are in the #ro#er #lace( )his is a tedious task% but absolutely 'ital to the library( When something is out o$ #lace% it is as good as lost2
Careful shelf-reading is one of the most important jobs you will do in the library. Straighten shel'es and other materials - shel'es need to be straightened on a daily basis%

and stray books and other materials should be #icked u# as they are s#otted and returned to the #ro#er location( Occasional Requests =ather books $or teachers ;re#are class materials *reate library dis#lays Light cleaning

!R ULAT!ON "RO E#URES )he "triuum #rogram should already be u# and running &hen you arri'e( -$ $or some reason it isnBt% the sign in in$ormation is located in the dra&er to the le$t o$ the circulation com#uter(
!ouble click the icon on the deskto# and you &ill be at the sign in &indo&( 1nce logged into "triuum% choose either *heck 1ut or *heck -n(

hec$ing %oo$s !n -n most cases% classes coming to the library &ill be returning books $rom the #re'ious &eek( Students &ill #lace their returned books in the return dro# or on the desk at the circulation desk( )hey &ill then sit do&n in #re#aration $or the dayBs lesson or acti'ity( "t that time% books should be checked-in &ith the circulation system using the $ollo&ing ste#s,

RENEW!N/ %OOKS Students may rene& books% but they must bring the book in to the library to rene& it( Aene&als are $or the a##ro#riate circulation #eriod /the same as a regular check-out0 Students may rene& books u# to 3 times i$ the book is not on the reser'e list( Aeser'ed books may not be rene&ed G #lease &arn students that they &ill not be able to rene& the book again( Students &ill hold on to the books they &ant to rene& and #resent them during check out time( /-$ you are on the check out screen be sure to s&itch back to the check in screen to rene& a book(0 Hel#$ul hint- kee# both the check in and check out screens o#en and go back and $orth as needed(

*hecking 1ut ooks ook Limits )he circulation #eriod is one book $or one &eek $or kindergarten and $irst grade% t&o books $or one &eek $or second graders% and t&o books $or t&o &eeks $or third% $ourth% and $i$th graders( )eachers may check out 30 books $or 30 days and 'olunteers may check out : books $or 14 days( "ll #atrons are $inancially res#onsible $or lost or damaged materials( 1'erdue

cart( Students need to listen $or the Dha##yF chime( -$ they hear a car-horn &arning% the book is on hold $or another student and needs to be turned in to the regular book return /or librarian@'olunteer0( )he cart is organi4ed by library section( !ouble checking to see i$ book ha'e truly been checked in is a good habit% but not re5uired( ;roblems seem to take care o$ themsel'esE

Each student has a library card /their name% teacher 6 grade is on it% as &ell as a

barcode0
)hey must $ind their teacher% then their card( )hey scan their card% then any and all books they ha'e( When done% they #lace their library card in the clear bo&l( )he librarian and 'olunteers

are res#onsible $or $iling the cards G not the students( *ards &ill be in al#habetical order by studentBs last name(

SHELV!N/ "RO E#URES We are 'ery $ortunate to ha'e a 'ery nice collection o$ materials $or our students to en<oy and to use( Ho&e'er% i$ students cannot $ind these books because the shel'es are in disarray% all o$ our other hard &ork is #ointless( Shel'ing books may seem a sometimes tiring and tedious task( Ho&e'er% #ro#er shel'ing is a basic necessity $or a &ell-organi4ed and e$$icient library( 7aterials are shel'ed in these areas,

)hese materials and their shel'ing #rocedures are described belo&, "$ter books are checked in% they should be #ut on the shel'ing cart( e$ore they are shel'ed% the books should be arranged on the cart according to the area they belong in(

3ou can determine &here the books belong by reading the label on the s#ine o$ the book( -$ the s#ine label is missing or torn% #lease set that book aside on the circulation desk( )he s#ine label is the Haddress labelB $or the book G it tells you &here in the library the book li'es( )he s#ine label gi'es the bookBs all N.mber% &hich indicates $iction% non$iction% etc( )he *all number o$ a book is the combination o$ letters or numbers and letters $ound on the s#ine o$ the book indicating the location o$ the book in the library( elo& are the ma<or categories o$ books and descri#tions o$ ho& they should be shel'ed( Arrangement o, %oo$s in the Library E'erybody 8iction /E0 a. E'erybody $iction /E0 books are $iled in al#habetical order by author and are located in the e'erybody $iction section o$ the library( b. 8or e.am#le% the labels on a series o$ books on a shel$ might a##ear as $ollo&s, E E E E E %OW %O1 %RA %RA %RA E %RE E %RE E %R!

-t is necessary to kee# all the books by the same author together( 8or e.am#le% in the E section you &ill $ind #o#ular series o$ books by authors &ith the last names o$ reathed and rett( )he labels $or all books by both o$ these authors &ill be the same, )hey &ill look like the $irst e.am#le sho&n in this section( )ake a moment to se#arate these books by author% so it &ill be easier $or the children to locate the books they &ant( 8iction /8-*0 a. "rranged in al#habetical order according to the authorBs last name( b. ears ;hiloso#hy o$ $ree choice reading, sometimes a student &ill choose a di$$icult book because he or she is $ascinated by the sub<ect% and it $eels good to ha'e a Dbig kid bookN about &hat he or she is interested in( 1ther times a student &ill choose an easy book because a little rela.ation is needed a$ter stretching the brain muscle all day( 1$ course% sometimes the student needs to be #aired &ith the book that is <ust right $or a research #ro<ect or $or reading #ractice% and that guidance &ill be #ro'ided by the teacher(
