A Little Princess Summary

How It All Goes Down When the story opens, we see the mushy smushy interactions between a little girl named Sara Crewe and her father (let s call him !apa Crewe", who are e#tremely sad about an imminent e$ent% &he imminent e$ent happens to be the fact that !apa Crewe is shipping Sara off to boarding school in 'ondon (the cloudiest, most dreary of all places to be abandoned(" because she simply cannot stay with him in India% It s not good for children because sun is worse than rain, and foreign countries turn good children into sa$ages, or something% (In case you re wondering) yes% &his is racist% In fact, the whole boo* is a tad racist% We ll get to that%" Sara arri$es at +iss +inchin s Seminary for Girls, which is a fancyboarding school run by a humorless old maid named (you guessed it(" +iss +inchin% !apa Crewe buys her lots of e#pensi$e clothes and toys, including a doll named ,mily, and then -ets off to India again% +iss +inchin treats her as a star pupil because she s rich, but secretly she has a serious disli*e of the little girl because she s intelligent and independent.and +iss +inchin doesn t li*e to feel threatened in any way% Sara ma*es friends with a not/too/bright girl named ,rmengarde and ta*es a little girl named 'ottie under her wing% She also befriends a scullery maid named 0ec*y and wows e$eryone with her impressi$e grasp of the 1rench language% So far, 'ondon is a success% 2n Sara s ele$enth birthday, +iss +inchin plans a huge party and Sara buys a giant doll that she ominously refers to as 3the last doll%3 Howe$er, as Sara is celebrating, !apa Crewe s lawyer comes to the boarding school and gi$es +iss +inchin some unfortunate news.!apa Crewe has died% !enniless% With no money to pay the bills% +inchin is angry because of the money, but she s delighted because now she can hate Sara openly% 2$ernight, Sara goes from the richest student at the school to a maid who s forced to sleep in a tiny attic room and perform all sorts of chores% She somehow sur$i$es by ma*ing up fantastical stories, befriending a rat, and tal*ing to her doll% 4es, she s a pretty weird little girl% Despite the fact that she s poor, hungry, and cold, Sara still manages to act li*e a princess, dispensing charity and spea*ing proper ,nglish% +eanwhile, her neighbors.a large family and a rich neighbor with an Indian ser$ant.are watching Sara, who they find $ery odd and sad% We get to see inside the Indian man and his house as well.and there is something reallllly interesting going on( &he Indian man happens to be searching for the child of his friend, 5alph Crewe, who was also his business partner in diamond mines% 0asically, the *id of this 5alph Crewe fellow is going to be stin*ing rich when this Indian guy finds her% Hm, 5alph Crewe% Something about that sounds familiar 6 2h, hey, it s Sara s dad( 7nfortunately, the man is totally on the wrong trac*, searching in 1rance and 5ussia% +eanwhile, on the other side of the wall, Sara has gotten herself intobig trouble% +iss +inchin punishes her se$erely, ta*ing away the meager scraps of food that she s been li$ing on% Sara goes to bed hungry and upset, but when she wa*es up in the morning, she sees that her room has been magically $isited and is full of nice things, a warm fire, and filling food% +agic and sorcery( &his whole 3el$es in the night3 thing continues for a while and Sara and 0ec*y are not 8uite so star$ed anymore, which bothers +iss +inchin because she s a total witch, and not in the cool 9% :% 5owling sense%

&hen, one day, Sara returns a mon*ey to her rich neighbor s house% (5eally%" When she gets there, the man and his lawyer reali;e that 6 wait for it 6 she s Sara Crewe( Sara comes to li$e with the man and recei$es her inheritance, and +iss +inchin is predictably miserable when she reali;es she s made a terrible mista*e in treating Sara poorly and missing out on all that money she could ha$e had%
