Wes Montgomery was one of the great jazz guitarists, a natural extension of Charlie

Christian, whose appealing use of octaves became influential and his trademark. He achieved great commercial success during his last few years, only to die prematurely. It had taken es a long time to become an overnight success. He started to teach himself guitar in !"#$ %using his thumb rather than a pick& and toured with 'ionel Hampton during !"#()!"*+, he can be heard on a few broadcasts from the period. -ut then .ontgomery returned to Indianapolis, where he was in obscurity during much of the !"*+s, working a day job and playing at clubs most nights. He recorded with his brothers vibraphonist -uddy and electric bassist .onk during !"*/)!"*" and made his first 0iverside album %!"*"& in a trio with organist .elvin 0hyne. In !"1+ the release of his album The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery made him famous in the jazz world. 2ther than a brief time playing with the 3ohn Coltrane 4extet %which also included 5ric 6olphy& later in the year, es would be a leader for the rest of his life. 7he one exception was the ironically titled Fusion!, a ballad date with a string section. 8ll of the 0iverside recordings have been reissued in a massive !9)C6 box set. ith the collapse of 0iverside, .ontgomery moved over to :erve, where during !"1#)!"11 he recorded an interesting series of mostly orchestral dates with arranger 6on 4ebesky and producer Creed 7aylor. 7hese records were generally a good balance between jazz and accessibility, even if the best performances were small) group outings with either the ynton ;elly 7rio or 3immy 4mith. In !"1/ es signed with Creed 7aylor at 8<. and during !"1/)!"1( he recorded three best)selling albums that found him merely stating simple pop melodies while backed by strings and woodwinds. His jazz fans were upset, but .ontgomery=s albums were played on 8. radio during the period. He helped introduce listeners to jazz, and his live performances were as freewheeling as his earlier 0iverside dates. >nfortunately at the height of his success, he died of a heart attack. However, .ontgomery=s influence is still felt on many young guitarists. es .ontgomery recorded exclusively for the 0iverside label during the four years covered by this massive !9)C6 box set and, although his later albums for :erve and particularly the pop?jazz 8<. dates sold many more copies, it is from his 0iverside dates that his legacy was primarily formed. :irtually unknown at the time of his debut on 0iverside, .ontgomery soon became a major influence whose style is still copied decades later. 7he guitarist is heard in @uite a few different settings hereA in trios with organist .elvin 0hynbe and a @uartet with pianist 7ommy Blanagan, as a sideman on different sessions with Cat 8dderley, Harold 'and, and Cannonball 8dderley, performing with his brothers, -uddy and .onk, holding his own with pianist Deorge 4hearing, vibraphonist .ilt 3ackson, and tenor great 3ohnny Driffin, and %for an album ironically titled Busion& playing with strings for the first time. 8ll in all, there is a tremendous amount of rewarding performances included in this essential set, most of which show why es .ontgomery is still considered one of the all)time great jazz guitarists.
