Kolotova, 193E Eveline Analysis James Augustine Aloysius Joyce was an Irish writer and poet, widely considered to be one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Joyce is a key figure in the development of the modernist novel. He is best known for his landmark novel Ulysses . Other major works are the short-story collection Dubliners , and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake. Although most of his adult life was spent outside the country, Joyce's Irish experiences are essential to his writings and provide all of the settings for his fiction and much of their subject matter. His fictional universe is firmly rooted in Dublin. The text being analyzed is taken from James Joyce's book of short stories "The Dubliners" and is one of his most famous works. This short but rather complicated story is plentifully decorated with numerous stylistic means. The story Eveline is about a young girl who chooses to continue a life of suffering despite the opportunity to live in a life of love. Through her bright descriptions, James Joyce explores Eveline's world and conveys her thoughts and emotions to the reader. The character that James Joyce introduced to us as "Eveline" becomes a character we can sympathize with. She lives a life of misery with her father. With her mother having passed, she is expected to take care of her childhood home. Joyce writes that Eveline struggled to keep "her promise to keep the home together as long as she could," a promise she made to her mother. Eveline's life soon changes as she meets Frank whom has asked her to leave Ireland with him and begin a new life, and to get rid of everything she had in not so easy life. The story begins with the description of Eveline, Joyce uses the metaphor (the odour of dusty cretonne), so this creates a special effect and you can feel as if you are there, near the window curtains watching the evening invade the avenue and feel the smell of dusty cretonne and with the introduction family characters in a town in Ireland, to show how many people were in Ev elins childhood, the author

uses enumeration (the Devines, the Waters, the Dunns, little Keogh). Moreover, family seems to be a strong theme in Joyces writing. This theme is evident when Eveline stays home and takes her mother duties in the family. Besides, the theme of death plays a major role in this story as the author points out that many of Evelines friends and family have died at some point (her mother was dead, Tizzie Dunn was dead, then Ernst). One major problem is that the family is very poor and money is a difficult question for all her family. Eveline expresses the importance of money when she is walking to the market with her purse. To show that Evelin tries to everything to help her family, to earn money, and to show hard life, the author uses detachment (she always gave her entire wages seven shillings and Harry always sent up what he could), (It was hard work a hard life but now that she was about to leave it). She tries to escape from that life, she had consented to go away, to leave her home, and to show the reader that it is not an easy task to choose money or family, the author uses rhetorical questions and exclamatory sentence (Home! Escape! She must escape! Was that wise? She tried to weigh each side of the question). James Joyce tells us that Eveline lacks the strength to make her own decision by using exclamatory sentences (No! No! No!). Taking into consideration everything that has been mentioned, its necessary to note that Joyce managed to prove that Eveline could make a decision, and that Eveline's subconscious was not completely ready to leave her family, home, and promises. Using the metaphor at the end of the story, James Joyce makes sure to write one last line to ensure readers are aware of Eveline's position as a female, declaring she was "passive, like a helpless animal," a position in which Eveline's father was constantly in. So, summing everything up, we may think that Eveline makes a choice and understands that she does not love him at a right moment. Some people may say

that if she loves him she should go with him, of course, on the hand, it is difficult to leave your parents, but they gave you a life, and now it is the time to begin and to make your own one. But I really reckon that love to a man doesnt matter h ere that much. Duty and responsibility outweigh the scales. Choosing between love and family, she makes a choice in favor of the second option, and to my opinion you should be a really strong and determined person to forget about your selfishness and sacrifice your time, money, life to your family in order to keep your word.
