Coatings World Heads to the Big Easy

oatings World has always been a supporter of the academic side of the paint and coatings industry. As such we make it a point of attending as many education-related events as we can. One event that we never miss is the Waterborne, High-Solids and Powder Coatings Symposium, which will be held this year February 24-28 in New Orleans. Held annually by the University of Southern Mississippis School of Polymers and High Performance Materials, this event brings together the brightest students with the top companies involved in the formulation of waterborne and other environmentally friendly coatings. And all of the proceeds from this Symposium go to fund the students and the Polymer Science program at USM. This year I am proud to announce that we will not just be attendees, but will be actively participating in the Symposium. Our publisher, Dale Pritchett, will be moderating a Pigments Panel and an Automotive Panel. The Automotive Panel will include presentations from automotive manufacturers Ford and Toyota as well as PPG automotive coatings and Sun Chemical pigments. In addition, contributing editors Steve and Beth McDaniel of Technology Litigators will be presenting an overview of some of their more popular topics discussed in their monthly column iPaint. If you are planning on attending the event please stop by our tabletop exhibit and pick up the latest issue of our magazine.

PPGs Aerocron Electrocoat Primer Meets Aerospace Specication 3144 for Aircraft Applications
PPG Industries aerospace coatings group has qualified AEROCRON electrocoat primer to SAE Internationals Aerospace Material Specification 3144 for anodic electrodeposition primer for aircraft applications. Qualifying Aerocron primer to the aerospace industry standard provides airframe manufacturers and subcontractors with third-party verification of its performance characteristics and attributes, according to Duane Utter, PPG global coatings segment manager, military coatings and classified products. Four variations of the PPG chromate-free primer have been qualified to AMS 3144 in order to meet specific customer or regional requirements.. Primer provides corrosion resistance to metal parts and is typically applied by spraying. In the electrocoating, or electrodeposition, process, metal parts are dipped into an electrically charged tank of Aerocron primer.

BASF and OEMs Develop ASTM Test Standard for Transportation Coatings
A collaborative 14-year effort involving BASF, automotive and aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), material suppliers and test equipment manufacturers has resulted in a new American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test standard for transportation coatings. The new method is 30 to 40 percent faster than the previous test standard used for many OEMs, and improves the accuracy to nearly 100 percent in predicting coating service life compared to less than 50 percent with the previous standard. Industry implementation of this new test can speed new product development, and aid in the development of better overall products for the coating industry. This test can be used for automobiles, aircrafts, trucks and rail cars. Officially named ASTM D786913 Standard Practice for Xenon Arc Exposure Test with Enhanced Light and Water Exposure for Transportation Coatings, the new test simulates physical and environmental stresses that an exterior transportation coating is exposed to in a subtropical climate. These stresses include long water exposures, wet/dry cycling, and high dosages of solar radiation, all of which have been shown to cause severe coatings deterioration.

The new test conditions consist of a primary test cycle and a sub-cycle. The primary test includes two long water exposures and a single, long light exposure with precise spectral match to daylight. The sub-cycle consists of shorter alternating water and light exposures and is designed to simulate cyclic stresses such as cracking and surface erosion. These two cycles are designed to replicate the common types of coatings failures driven by the interaction of photo-oxidation during daylight and hydrolysis during water exposure. Together, these failures can lead to gloss loss, color change, adhesion, blistering and cracking. BASF has been active in the ASTM D-01 committee on accelerated weathering for many years, and began efforts in test development in response to a customer issue. BASF brought key partners together, developed the critical coating formulas for testing, and conducted several important experiments in the physical test laboratories, which resulted in the new test method.

Ceresana Analyzes Global Market for Styrene

In the recently published study, the market research institute Ceresana comprehensively analyzes and describes the development of the global market for styrene. Styrene is an important product in the petrochemical industry and used to manufacture a broad range of products. The importance of styrene is reflected by the revenues generated with this product: market value amounted to $41.8 billion in 2012. Approximately 40 percent of the styrene consumed worldwide in 2012 were processed into polystyrene. Polystyrene is used in the manufacturing of food packaging as well as electrical and electronic devices. The global economy will continue to recover during the next few years and thus provide the general framework for a moderate increase of demand for this type of plastic. The report finds that demand for polystyrene will not increase as dynamically as demand for other standard plastics due to a change in technologies and advancing substitution processes. Market researchers at Ceresana forecast global demand for styrene in the production of polystyrene to rise by, on average, 2.3 percent per year. The second largest sales market is the production of expandable polystyrene (EPS), which is used as insulation material in new residential units and the refurbishment of old buildings, among others. Styrene based engineering plastics, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) are used by the automotive and electronics industry, while styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is processed into tires. Styrene-butadiene latex (SBL) is utilized in carpets and paper coatings. Another application is the manufacturing of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), which are processed into fiberglass suitable for automotive bodyworks and naval vessels due to its rigidity. According to the analyses of Ceresana, the production of ABS and EPS will provide the largest stimuli to growth in the future. Demand in these segments is projected to increase by 4.1 percent and 3.8 percent p.a. until 2020. While the ABS industry is still in the initial stages in many emerging countries

Zepol Reports U.S. Imports in 2013 Were the Highest in Six Years
Zepol Corp. reports that U.S. vessel imports were up 3.7 percent from 2012, which totaled more than 18.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot container) brought into the U.S. last year. U.S. imports in 2013 started off at a slow start but ended with a surge from July through December. Annual TEUs havent been this high since 2007, which is a good sign for a strong recession rebound in the U.S. trade industry, Zepol reported. So far in 2014, the first three weeks of imports in January are already 5.2 percent higher than the same time last year. It was a surprise to see 2013 imports so high since the beginning of the year was relatively stagnant, said U.S. trade expert and CEO of Zepol Paul Rasmussen, but imports have continued to expand during the recent economic recovery and factors like a dropping unemployment rate and a busy holiday shopping season may be positive contributors for U.S. importers. We expect the increasing trend to continue as we move into 2014.

with excellent growth prospects, producers of EPS in several industrialized countries are able to profit from state-subsidies targeted at increasing energy efficiency. Even on saturated markets, this can provide growth impulses. In the end, consumption of styrene depends on the demand of consumers for the different styrene based products. Thus, emerging countries exhibiting strong economic growth and a rising income offer a considerable potential. Conditions as propitious as these attract investment in the expansion of the downstream styrene industry. On the long term, this will lead to an establishing of an ever larger part of the value creation chain in these countries. As result, demand for styrene in some countries will rise significantly. An example for a development of this kind is China. In the past eight years, demand for styrene in this country rose by 9.6 percent per year. China is the worldwide largest sales market, accounting for 31.5 percent of market shares in 2012. The U.S. followed at a considerable distance, after demand for styrene fell by, on average, 1.9 percent p.a. since 2004. Global production of styrene is increasingly relocating to emerging countries, while developed industrialized regions reduced capacities considerably in the last few years, especially Western Europe and the U.S. This shift was triggered by a previous excessive increase of production capacity at a time when demand for styrene rose at less dynamic rates or even declined in the aftermath of the global economic crisis. An effect of this process was the decline of global capacity utilization to 75 percent in 2009. While production capacities were relocated, degree of global capacity utilization rose again. This development is likely to continue; we forecast the highest relative increase of styrene production until 2020 to occur in South America and the Middle East. The production capacity in these countries with extensive crude oil resources will increase to 4.8 million tons in 2020. Ceresana expects output in South America to increase by, on average, 13.4 percent p.a. during the next eight years. CW

Costa Ricos ve million inhabitants enjoy a gross domestic product of approximately $45 billion, with a relatively high associated per capita income of $11,000. As such, the availability of disposable income for home paints is relatively strong.

osta Ricas largest paint and coatings manufacturers have increased their exports to this hemisphere 61 percent over the last five years, thanks in part to increased foreign investments in the industry. The statistics, reported by El Financiero, cited the governments La Promotora de Comercio Exterior (Procomer) export agency, which also indicates that the top ten manufacturers export $44 million worth of paint annually. The largest exporting manufacturers in Costa Rica include: Colombias Pintuco, which owns the Kativo brand and manufacturers the Protecto, Glidden and Vastalux brands; Grupo Sur, which owns the Sur and Koral Brands; Comex and Lanco. Among non-exporting paint companies are: Sherwin-Williams, which markets its Excello acrylic latex line; Corporacin BBG, which markets the BBG and Ultra Plus lines; and Fibrocentro, which markets the Pinturama brand. Kativo operates three production facilities in the region, in Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama, and operates a technical center in Costa Rica serving its 68 stores in Central America. Kativo was purchased by Pintuco in August 2012. Lanco produces its Lanco brand at one production plant in the country at Alajuela. Mexicos Comex distributes in Costa Rica and the rest of the region, with a total of some 90 points of sale. And in the pipe coatings segment, Lord Corp. recently forged a joint venture in Costa Rica with Terramix. Costa Ricas five million inhabitants enjoy a gross domestic product of approximately $45 billion, with a relatively high associated per capita income of $11,000. This compares with approximately $8,000 for the region and $13,000 for Panama, according to one think tank. As such, the availability of disposable income for home paints is relatively strong. Where domestic consumption levels finally fail, exports pick up. Among neighboring country importers of Costa Rican paint, Panama leads, taking one-third of the production, followed by Nicaragua, which takes approximately 20 percent

REACH Exposure Scenarios Present New Challenges for Coating Suppliers

by Sean Milmo European Correspondent milmocw@rodmanmedia.com now at a stage where what is called exposure scenarios are being drawn up from the dossiers by both chemical suppliers and formulators to be distributed along the supply chain. They detail what users need to do to control hazardous chemicals. Exposure scenarios are one of the main innovations of the REACH regulation, said the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), Helsinki, Finland, in a guidance document for downstream users issued in December. The agency is responsible for administering the legislation. Although the legislation has now been in operation for nearly seven years, there are still uncertainties about how to introduce and implement exposure scenarios. They have turned out to be far more intricate than expected.
February 2014

EACH, the European Unions chemical safety regulation, is now becoming increasingly complex and expensive for coatings suppliers, both for those based in Europe and those exporting into the region. The strategy behind REACHan acronym for the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicalsis that producers and importers register with safety dossiers all chemicals with a sale of above one ton a year and then the information in the dossiers will be passed downstream to formulators and end-users. The legislation, first introduced in 2007 to be enacted over an 11-year period to 2018, is

Europe International Coatings Scene

They describe how people and the environment may be exposed to a hazardous chemical or substance during its entire life cycle from its use in the manufacture of a coating or other product, its application and disposal. More importantly, the scenarios recommend how exposure to the substance should be controlled to ensure its safe use. The big challenge for coatings companies and distributors is that their products can comprise more than 20 different chemicals each of which has its own REACH safety profile and exposure scenario. Under the legislation the coatings producer or distributor has the responsibility of providing a exposure scenario covering the chemicals in a single product. For exporters of chemicals, coatings and other formulated products, the exposure scenario requirement reinforces a widely held view outside Europe that REACH is a barrier to trade. The Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA), representing U.S. speciality chemical producers, reckons that REACH compliance is equivalent to a tariff of more than 20 percent. To help sort out the problems with exposure scenarios, ECHA has set up a task force of regulators and industry representatives the Expert Network on Exposure Scenarios (ENES). It is in the process of deciding how the risks of mixtures or formulations containing hazardous chemicals should be assessed. It also investigating how the content of exposure scenarios, particularly the advice on how to manage risks, should be best communicated down the supply chain through extensions to a products Safety Data Sheet (SDS). A major difficulty dealing with the risks from mixtures in coatings and other products is that toxicologists and other experts still cannot agree how to measure the dangers from chemicals in mixtures. We have been identifying (in ENES) at least 15 methods for evaluating mixtures but there are clearly others as well, said Erwin Annys, REACH and chemicals policy director at the European Chemistry Industry Council (Cefic), representing chemical, including formulation, producers. Another complication with exposure scenarios is the information on uses has to be passed upstream to the chemical and formulation producers for conversion into exposure scenarios. Scenarios for individual chemicals are drawn up by producers or importers both to be included in their REACH registration dossiers and to passed on to formulators. But those for mixtures are put together by coatings companies and distributors or other suppliers of formulated products mainly by relying on the information in the exposure scenarios provided by the suppliers of individual chemicals. Critics of the exposure scenario concept claim that, due to the remoteness of chemical manufacturers and even formulators from end-users, information in scenarios on the risks of individual chemicals is likely to be inconsistent with specific working conditions and processes. The numbers of uses and processes covered in a typical exposure scenario could extend into double figures. They include details of indoor and outdoor conditions, modes of application, types of packaging and delivery, mixing equipment, substance concentrations and task durations. In addition the scenarios list recommended rick management or control measures, such as ventilation equipment and protection clothing and accessories. To ensure that exposure scenarios are kept short and easy to understand, a system of generic exposure scenarios has been developed so that the scenarios can be drawn up by sector trade associations for distribution to the majority of their members. This is a strategy which is being adopted by the European Council of Paints, Printing Inks and Artists Colours Industry (Cepe)the main European coatings trade association. We believe that generic exposure scenarios will cover around 80 percent of normal uses of coatings and printing inks, said Janice Robinson, Cepes director of product relations. Providing exposure scenarios which apply to specific uses other than generic ones would be outside our responsibility. Within a consortium of formulator sectorsthe Downstream Users of Chemicals Co-ordination Group (DUCC), which in addition to coatings companies embraces manufacturers of detergents, adhesives, crop protection products and construction chemicals Cepe is working on the harmonization of information from chemical producers. This should help to prevent different exposure scenarios being provided for the same individual chemical. With the help of consistency in the information on substances, we can then ensure that the generic exposure scenarios match the risk data provided by the suppliers of hazardous chemicals, said Robinson. The big task facing DUCC and other individual or consortia organizations is the development of relatively uniform methods for assessing risks from chemical mixtures. One key question is how inclusive the mixtures exposure scenarios should be. For mixtures there is no legal obligation to provide complete exposure scenarios of all substances but (this is) information which may be needed by some companies, explained Ophelie Roblot, health, safety and environment director of the European Association of Chemical Distributors (FECC), at a recent ENES meeting. Currently members of ENES are concentrating on developing an assessment system which would focus on gauging the impact of potentially the most hazardous substances within mixtures. Our intention is to find the overlaps between the different methods and to try to combine them in an approach which covers all the aspects of mixtures evaluation as much as possible so that it can be used virtually for every mixture, said Annys. The toxicology of mixtures, however, is a relatively young science with issues like the reactivity of some hazardous chemicals within them still unclear. Coatings formulators are likely to be still updating and refining the exposure scenarios of their products well beyond 2018 when the implementation of REACH is due to be completed. CW

Wood coating manufacturers report on the latest trends in the market.

Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

ecovery in the housing market has had a positive effect for both the professional and Do It Yourself (DIY) segments of the wood coatings market. Wood coatings manufacturers interviewed by Coatings World reported strong sales for 2013 and are optimistic for the future. Traditionally, many more deck care projects come from remodeling jobs or adding decks to existing homes versus new home construction, said Mike Kozlowski, director of marketing, Thompsons Water Seal. This helped keep our business relatively stable during the worst of the economic downturn. But theres no doubt that an improved economy both makes retailers and consumers more willing to expand, and weve definitely seen evidence of that in 2013. Barring any unforeseen events, 2014 should be a growth year. The recovery in the housing market has had a favorable impact on our business, agreed Bill Fiorillo, global market director kitchen cabinets and furniture at Sherwin-Williams. Orders for

residential furniture, wood building products and kitchen cabinets also increased for us in 2013, with some areas in the double digits. Key markets include kitchen cabinets, contract furniture, residential furniture, architectural millwork and retain store fixtures. Rust-Oleum continues to see strong sales in the wood coatings market. Consumer spending is growing as the economy continues to recover, said Mark Wilgen, Rust-Oleum director. The Professional market has also stabilized and started to grow. At the current time, homeowners are staying in their homes longer, and are investing more in the upkeep of their floors, decks, fences and siding, Wilgen added. Well maintained wood surfaces add to the value of the home and saves money in the long term. Homeowners will spend more to ensure the products they used to finish their wood surfaces not only look good, but will also last. They dont want to invest time and money on a product that will only hold up for one season. They want a product that will beatifies while also protecting the surface for years to come.

Recovery in the housing market has had a favorable impact on our busines. Orders for residential furniture, wood building products and kitchen cabinets also increased for us in 2013.
Wood coatings must withstand harsh conditionals and maintain their aestetic appeal. Customers are looking for a variety of performance attributes in their wood coating products. The products must not only be able to withstand harsh environments, but they must also offer unique color options. Browse through any Big Box home improvement store and you will see considerable shelf space dedicated to wood stains and finishes. Wood coatings manufacturers must continue to innovate to rise above the crowd. Kozlowski of Thompsons Water Seal noted that while decks and outdoor living remain very popular, there is a lot competing for the homeowners attention and discretionary funds. We think a key driver in this category is innovation, said Kozlowski. Giving consumers a faster, easier and more effective way to do something moves the needle. Sherwin-Williams reports that their customers rely on them to provide the latest coating technologies that meet industry accepted performance standards such as KCMA, AWI and BIFMA. In addition, end use customer expectations need to be met such as mar resistance and resistance to household chemicals, said Fiorillo. We see the need to become a true partner with our customers by offering innovative products as well as by going above and beyond with value-added services such as training, inventory management,

design engineering and logistics solutions. This is a win-win solution, and were proud of our track record in becoming valued partners to our customers. Customers continue to ask about green finishing practices, added Fiorillo. The concept of green continues to evolve. Industry associations have established defined green programs and statements, while specification programs reinforce certain standards for green. Considerations include things like indoor air quality, sustainability, material composition and process efficiency. For the professional, a quicker dry time provides their clients with a faster return to service. Products must be compliant with increasing regulations while delivering enhanced performance, said Wilgen. To align with these expectations, Rust-Oleum is focused on the development of new innovative technologies to improve the user experience. In terms of color trends, Wilgen said that homeowners are gravitating toward colors that are unique and match the current trends in furniture, cars and fashion. According to Fiorillo, color trends in wood coatings for both residential and contract furniture are shifting to lighter, cleaner looks. White painted cabinets and glazed finishes are trending in kitchen cabinets, he explained. F3 products are traditional, catalyzed products with none of the formaldehyde typically emitted during application and curing, and offer the same performance and aesthetics without concern of formaldehyde, according to the company. Finishers benefit by eliminating both the strong odor of formaldehyde from their finishing process, as well as the residual formaldehyde odor that often causes complaints during installation and unpacking of wood products, according to the company. The existing F3 line-up includes Sher-Wood F3 Hi-Bild PreCat Lacquer, Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Varnish, and Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Sealer. All F3 finishes are available for use as drop-in coatings on existing finishing lines, saving end-users the expense and time of purchasing and installing new finishing equipment. Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Varnish has achieved Greenguard Certification, certified to Greenguard standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air during product usage. This year, Thompsons Water Seal brand is launching the firstever aerosol wood protector ThompsonS WaterSeal Waterproofer Plus Clear Wood Protector. The Thompsons WaterSeal brand was the first to launch a waterproofer specifically for wood, and that formula has been a best-seller for more than 30 years, said Kozlowski. Now, weve put the three-way protection into a 12-ounce aerosol formula that is ideal for small projects. The homeowner gets superior waterproofing protection along with a coating that resists mildew and UV damage all without having to break out tools or cleanup. Just push a button. The Thompsons WaterSeal brand had debuted several aerosol waterproofers in the past few years, including our Thompsons WaterSeal Fabric Seal and Thompsons WaterSeal Wood Stain. Consumers love the convenience for small projects, and theyre very profitable for retailers. For homeowners whose decks are not as severely damaged and who do not want to stain and protect every year, Rust-Oleum released Rust-Oleum Restore 4x Deck Cover. Its an easy-to-apply, water-based coating that revives the surface while offering long lasting protection to protect the deck for years to come.
A key driver in the wood coatings DIY category is innovation, according to Mike Kozlowski, director of marketing at Thompsons Water Seal.

New Products
Sherwin-Williams introduced four formaldehyde-free products in 2013, adding to its existing offering and providing wood finishers with a family of formaldehyde-free finishes to choose from, including lacquers, varnishes and surfacers, primers and sealers. Filling out its line of high performance, formaldehyde-free finishes, Sherwin-Williams has launched these four additional products in its F3 line-up. Sher-Wood F3 Hi-Bild PreCat White Lacquer, Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Plus Conversion Varnish, SherWood F3 Kemvar Plus Surfacer, and Sher-Wood F3 PreCat Primer/Surfacer. With the addition of these coatings to its existing line of F3 products for formaldehyde free finishing, Sherwin-Williams expands the number of coating options available to help wood finishers eliminate formaldehyde from their finishing process, according to the company.

It is also ideal for concrete surfaces such as walkways, steps, patios, porches and more, according to the company. The backyard and the deck is an important room in our homes. Unfortunately due to harsh weather conditions decks take a lot of abuse, said Joel Tressler, director of marketing for Rust-Oleum Restore. Most homeowners think the only solution to revive a battered deck is replacement. Thanks to Deck and Concrete Restore, homeowners can now protect their investment and reclaim this extra room and start enjoying it again without spending a small fortune. Deck and Concrete Restore offers a scuff, peel and chip-resistant finish that withstands temperature changes, heavy foot traffic and furniture abrasion. Tnemec Company
Tnemec offers corrosion protection coatings for a variety of structures and buildings.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

Company Prole:

nemec Company, Inc. was founded in 1921 and is a leading manufacturer of high-performance architectural and industrial coatings. The Kansas City, Missouribased company offers innovative coating formulations that protect a wide range of substrates and enhance aesthetics. From water tanks and treatment plants, to manufacturing plants, industrial facilities and specialty architectural buildings, Tnemec coatings can be found protecting virtually all types of structures and buildings. Tnemec Company offers a wide-range of coatings that provide corrosion protection to steel, non-ferrous, and concrete substrates, said Mark Thomas, vice president marketing, Tnemec Company, Inc. These include zinc-rich and mio/ zinc urethane primers, chemical resistant epoxies and waterbased products. A particularly unique product offered by Tnemec Company is a water-based epoxy coating with corrosion-inhibitive properties that provides equivalent corrosion protection as solventbased epoxy coatings. The applications for Tnemecs products vary and include protection from exterior weathering, chemical exposures and corrosive vapors. According to Thomas, the primary concern when choosing corrosion protecting products is the environmental conditions which the substrate and coating will be subjected to and thus the performance level required of the coating and coating system. A full understanding of the environmental conditions is needed in order to provide a sound coating recommendation, said Thomas. Often this includes identifying any factors that could increase the severity of the environment such as a coastal exposure in additional to exterior weathering, or high temperatures in addition to chemical immersion. Tnemec Companys product development efforts have been, and remain, focused on performance. By utilizing

new technology the company has been able to formulate lower VOC products while maintaining ease of application and high performance standards, said Thomas. The high-performance coatings industry is an extremely dynamic one and requires constant forward progress in terms of innovative product development and technical customer service. New technology is continually introduced to the coatings industry that provides better performance while lowering VOCs and limiting environmental impact. Tnemec Company intends to remain at the forefront of this new technology while assisting its customers with sound advice and support. CW

Tnemec Companys 2013 Tank of the Year

With a vivid, intricate wrap-around motif and tagline that reads, Creativity Redened, this elevated water tank from Mt. Vernon, Illinois was named Tnemecs 2013 Tank of the Year. This water tanks new look is part of a rebranding effort for the City of Mt. Vernon. In 2012, the City hired an outside company to help develop a new logo, said Bonnie Jerdon, director of the Mt. Vernon Convention and Visitors Bureau. We wanted to create some continuity and increase our amount of visitors. The shinning exterior and interior coatings systems were manufactured by Tnemec Company, Inc. All exposed steel is coated with Tnemecs agship water tank topcoat, HydroFlon an industry standard for superior protection against UV degradation and other harmful effects caused by atmospheric exposure. The plated steel was fabricated by CB&I and coated in-shop with a moisture-cured, zinc-rich aromatic urethane primer, Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc, on both the interior and exterior. The steel was delivered to the jobsite already primed. The interior steel was then painted with two coats of Series N140 Pota-Pox Plus, a potable water coating certied in accordance with ANSI/NSF Std. 61. The exterior steel received an intermediate coat of Series 73 Endura-Shield before the nish coat was applied. The nish coat, Series V700 Low VOC HydroFlon, was specied in the color Tank White. This version of HydroFlon meets area air regulations and provides extremely long-term maintenance cycles with excellent color and gloss retention. The tanks top-to-bottom mural of spiraling, bubble-like shapes was coated using HydroFlon, too. They submitted several colors and we provided them with options in every shade, said Mike Cerruti, local coating consultant with Coating Solutions, LLC in Eureka, Missouri. They ended up using two gallons of seven different colors for the logo and design. The logo itself was painted by Missouri-based contractor, Trikote LLC. To create the design and leave sharper lines, the painter cut patterns out of house wrap material, explained Cerutti. Once the stencils were cut out, they applied the many colors of HydroFlon using brush and rollers.

Orion Engineered Carbons To Cease Production at Portugal Facility

AkzoNobel Joins Together for Sustainability to Enhance Global Supply Chain
AkzoNobel has underlined its commitment to driving improvements throughout its global supply chains by signing up to the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative. Founded in 2011, the purpose of TfS is to develop and implement a global audit program to assess and improve sustainability practices within the supply chains of the chemical industry. The company has joined forces with the six existing members BASF, Bayer, Evonik Industries, Henkel, LANXESS and Solvay with the aim of building on established principles such as the United Nations Global Compact and the Responsible Care Global Charter. We already carry out extensive sustainability assessments in our own supply chains, explained Ton Geurts, AkzoNobels chief procurement officer. But by integrating TfS into our existing strategy we will enhance our current processes and further improve the quality of our supply chains for the benefit of our customers. The TfS initiative involves independent experts carrying out assessments and audits of suppliers, avoiding the need for each of the members to conduct their own. Results and scorecard ratings are then shared within TfS on a web-based collaborative platform. As well as avoiding double audits and assessments, other benefits include quality assurance, a reduction in the bureaucratic burden for suppliers and the lowering of risks in relation to sustainability requirements. of 50 percent. Specialized in the manufacture of synthetic piperonal, Crown Chemicals and DRT have provided for several years a sustainable alternative to piperonal and planvto double their production capacity in 2014.

Orion Engineered Carbons GmbH has ceased production at its Sines, Portugal facility affecting immediately approximately 36 of the 40 positions at the plant. The shutdown will take place while investments are being made in the companys other carbon black plants. The restructuring investments will increase manufacturing efficiencies enabling Orion to better meet customer needs in response to todays highly competitive environment dominated by volatile raw material and high energy costs, the company reported. Jack Clem, Orions CEO, said that in order for the company to remain competitive in todays global marketplace, it must fully utilize the capabilities of its carbon black operations, concentrating resources at more efficient facilities that can compete in todays challenging environment. Orion remains committed to significant investments needed to maintain its position as the leading producer of specialty carbon blacks and a major supplier of carbon blacks to the tire and rubber industries worldwide, he added. Realignment of the companys manufacturing operations in Europe will allow Orion to better serve the market and respond more efficiently to customer needs. We regret the impact this restructuring will have on our employees and their families, said Clem. The men and women who work in our Sines carbon black operation have contributed significantly to our success over the many years it has been in existence. Clem said Orion will assist employees directly impacted by the closure through outplacement assistance including job search and counseling, and severance benefits. According to Clem, once manufacturing has ceased the plant would continue to ship carbon black products until depletion of existing stocks to fulfill existing customer commitments. After this, the site will be deactivated.
