Multan District is a district in the Punjab province of Pakistan. According to the 1998 census of
Pakistan it had a population of 3,116,851 of which 41.64% were urban. Its capital is the city
of Multan.
Multan District is surrounded by the Khanewal District to the North and North East, the Vehari
District to the East and Lodhran District to the South. The Chenab River passes on its Western
side, across which lies Muzaffargarh District. The district of Multan is spread over an area of
3,721 square kilometers.
REDUCED DISTANCE:
It is the distance of the channel measured in feet. It represents the
complete length of the channel as in feet, from the originating point till the finishing point.
G.C.A:
It is the gross command area irrigated by the respective canal or channel. It shows the
total area that the canal is irrigating at present.
C.C.A:
It represents the Culturable command area irrigated by the canal. It shows the area that is
Culturable among the total area being irrigated by the canal; it is always less than G.C.A.
CANAL MILE:
It is a unit of measurement in irrigation. In irrigation it is taken as 5000 feet.
That is,
1 Canal mile = 5000 ft
LINK CANALS:
These are the canals which are constructed to transfer water to the other
conveyance structure which contains in-sufficient quantity of water. These transfer water from
river to canal system.
BRACKISH WATER:
It shows the nature of the water present in that locality. Brackish water
means sour water or water which is not suitable for drinking.
SALINE WALTER:
Saline water indicates the salinity present in the water. It shows that water
is contaminated with salinity and is not safe for drinking or human use.
UNITS:
The unit system used in the irrigation department is the F.P.S system. All the
measurements taken and recorded in irrigation department engulf the F.P.S system. For example
the discharge is measured in Cs (Cusecs) ft3/sec.
WATER ALLOWANCE:
It is the amount of water available per 1000 acre of land. It is
expressed as a percentage thus showing the 1000 acre of land.
