THE DAILY NEWS

INVASION BEGINS!
ALLIES LAND IN FRANCE
THOUSANDS OF SOLDIERS have landed on the beaches of northern France. It is the start of a major attack against the Germans. The five beaches stretch for over 40 kilometres. About 4,000 ships took the soldiers to the beaches. It was the largest fleet of ships ever put together.

Soldiers from Britain, the USA and Canada started to land on the beaches at 6am. Within a few hours, about 156,000 soldiers were on the beaches. Before the landings, over 2000 planes dropped bombs on German defences and bridges. More soldiers have been dropped by parachute. General Dwight Eisenhower is the commander of the invasion.

Germans surprised
The German army was taken by surprise but they are fighting back. Many American soldiers have died at Omaha Beach. But the invasion is going as planned. More soldiers are landing on the beaches every hour. People in Britain are excited about the news. One man said this is the best day of the war. We are finally fighting back. Good luck to our soldiers! Winston Churchill said: so far, the commanders say that everything is going well. But President Roosevelt was more cautious. He said that you dont just walk to Berlin.
