2.17.4 Create a Golf Ball This tutorial shows how to create a 2D axiDent profile symmetric model with a circular pattern. We create a golf ball, shown on the right. All dimensions are in inches. The golf ball diameter is Dent 1.25 inches. The dent profile diameter is 0.06 inch with a depth of 0.015 inch. Modeling strategy: 1. Select the Front sketch plane. 2. Sketch a circle with diameter 1.25 inches. Also sketch an axis that passes through the circle center. 3. Revolve the circle about the axis an angle of 180 degrees to create a sphere that makes up the profile of the golf ball. 4. Sketch the dent profile in the Front sketch plane. Revolve cut it to create one dent. Also in the same sketch, create an axis which is 7 degrees inclined to the vertical axis, as shown in the screenshot below. 5. Circular pattern the dent profile with an instance of 2. Use the angular dimension of 7 degrees as the reference direction of the pattern and the angle as 7 degrees, as shown in the screenshot below. 6. Now using the central axis of the sphere as the reference, create the circular pattern of the dent as shown in the screenshot below.

7. Repeat step 5 but now create an instance of the dent at 14 degrees from the central axis. After that, repeat step 6 to create a circular pattern of that instance. Select the number of instances to fit the perimeter. 8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to create the dent instance up to 90 degrees with increments of 7 degrees (21 degrees, ..., 84 degrees, 90 degrees last increment is 6 degrees) and create the circular pattern at each level of instance as shown on the screenshot below. 9. Create the mirror image of the top half of the golf ball dent pattern (select all the patterns), by using the Top plane as the mirror plane, to complete the model as shown in the following screenshot below.

Tutorial 2.17.4 discussion: As complex as the golf ball looks, it is an axisymmetric model with a circular pattern of the dents. The circular pattern has a different number of dent instances, depending on the dent level. Think of the earths equator and the altitude lines above it and below it. Tutorial 2.17.4 hands-on exercise: Can you think of another way to create the golf ball model?

Part I: Theory 2.1 2.2 2.3 Give an example of how the centralized integrated database concept can help with the what-if situations that arise during the design process. Discuss the contents of a database for a line, a circle, and an arc. Can you define a nonorthogonal WCS? How is three-point definition interpreted by software?
