Ibu Kita Kartini:

Fighting for the Educational Rights of Indonesian women.

Process Paper

Amanda Purnnomo-Marki, Jamie Oh, Samantha Hawes Junior Division Group Website

As Indonesians ourselves, we were always aware about the fact that Ibu Kartini had improved womens educational rights in Indonesia, but we never knew exactly how. Considering that, had Ibu Kartini not improved women rights in Indonesia, we would not have been in the schools we are now - or have been to school at all - (which we take for granted), this proved that the awareness and role of Ibu Kartini was slowly diminishing from many Indonesian students. Although this may be a frequently researched topic by many others, we also wanted to know more about our country ourselves, and so we decided to choose this topic. Our research was done mainly on the Internet, as the books in our school library were all English-based and finding books of the Indonesian history were quite hard (this was saddening). Since not many English-speakers were aware of Ibu Kartinis role in Indonesia, we decided to conduct our internet research mostly in Indonesian: we would search up her roles in Indonesian or Dutch websites, read/understand the text, and translate what we have interpreted into English. Since Java was a Dutch colony back in Kartinis time, we also found information and photos on Dutch websites. We were also lucky to find out that a relative of one of the members knew Kartini, and that a professor who had met her himself knew the relative as well; we interviewed them and acquired further insight into what Kartini really aspired for and what she really did. Creating and developing our website did not take long. We firstly gathered all the information and photos we needed (the roles were divided equally among each other) and stored it in a Word document. Then, we printed the information out and filtered out the least important information since we did not want to exceed the word limit of 1200. Next, we inputted the information onto the NHD weebly website, in which we had to choose an appropriate theme, font and other features. We put buttons on each page linking one to another so the viewer could easily navigate himself or herself without having to press too many buttons. In order to make the presentation more interesting, we embedded quotes (translated by ourselves) and photos of Ibu Kartini evenly throughout the website. We also found the song Ibu Kita Kartini by the ITB orchestra. Although women have been around the Earth as long as men have, they did not get their human rights until the previous century. Women rights movements thrived around the world, and although this movement faced a lot of opposition due to the cultural and religious status in Indonesia, one woman, with the help of many others, was able to change this; this was Kartini. Had Kartini not done what she had done, we might not be in the schools we are in now. (Word count: 500)
