This hapter deals only with simple and common examples on how to write !ootnote and /ndnote citations. To view examples, see hapter A. !irst !ootnotes and /ndnotes 5 /xamples in MLA "tyle as well as !ootnotes 5 "ample 0age and /ndnotes 5 "ample 0age. !ootnotes and /ndnotes are used to give credit to sources of any material borrowed, summariEed or paraphrased. They are intended to refer readers to the exact pages of the wor2s listed in the #orks Cited, $eferences, or "i liography section. The main difference between !ootnotes and /ndnotes is that !ootnotes are placed numerically at the foot of the very same page where direct references are made, while /ndnotes are placed numerically at the end of the essay on a separate page entitled Endnotes or 2otes. 4f you are still using a typewriter, a superscript number is typed half a space above the line after the last word of the citation, e.g., ;The 4nformation "uperhighway is giving way to a ommercial "uperhighway.;9 4f you are using a word processor, you can access the superscript function. To type a !ootnote citation, the same superscript number is put at the beginning of the !ootnote at the bottom of the same page where the citation occurs. When mentioning a wor2 for the first time, a full and complete !ootnote or /ndnote entry must be made. LDT/% Dnly one sentence is used in a !ootnote or /ndnote citation, i.e., only one period or full stop is used at the end of any !ootnote or /ndnote citation. 4n a &ibliography, each citation consists of a minimum of three statements or sentences, hence each entry re=uires a minimum of three periods, e.g., a period after the author statement, a period after the title statement, and a period after the pu lication statement $publicationCpublisherCpublication date..

MLA Handbook for writers of research papers (7th edition)

What is MLA? MLA is a reference tool used in subject areas for the Humanities. It provides extensive guidelines on how to formulate a topic, format a research paper, cite parenthetical texts and compile a list of works cited in English as well as other foreign languages. Other useful capabilities include documenting online sources, writing a quote from an e-mail received or incorporating abbreviations in our list of references. !here is also in-depth discussion on plagiarism.
Parenthetical Citations In general, MLA requires parenthetical citations, or citations that are put in parentheses, in the text, directly following the material that is quoted, summarized, or paraphrased. 1. Use a parenthetical citation when referencing wor s of others, following a quotation from a source or paraphrasing a source!s ideas. ". In the author#page method, use author!s last name and page num$er %s &. 'hen referencing the same page or a different page $y the same author in a paragraph (ust incorporate the page num$er. ). If an author is un nown %for example, with a we$ source&, use an a$$re*iated *ersion of the wor !s title in quotes followed $y the page num$er. +. ,o cite authors with the same last names, include their full name or initials followed $y the page num$er. -. .iting authors with three or fewer authors, list the authors! last names with /and! $efore the last author cited. 'hen citing more than three authors, cite the first author!s last name followed $y et al. 0. Upon citing electronic sources, film or Internet sources, reference the source in in#text citations. 1ources should $e italicized. 2. .ite the name of the entire $i$le, chapter and *erse. 3.g. %New Jerusalem Bible, 3ze . 1. -# 14&.

New and Revised Guidelines 1. MLA now requires the inclusion of issue and *olume num$ers of (ournals in electronic data$ases. Use of Italics5 Italics must $e used now for the *olume of a pu$lication

4 In#text citations and titles in list of wor s cited e.g. $oo s, plays poems pu$lished as $oo s, pamphlets, periodicals, we$sites, data$ases, films, $roadcasts, audio recordings %compact discs, cassettes, al$ums& performances %dance or opera&, musical compositions, wor s of *isual art, and the names of *essels %ships, aircraft, spacecraft 1 " ) + 0 2 : > the use of foreign words in 3nglish text 'e$site and we$site pu$lisher of when citing online periodicals. 6esignated words such as linguistic turn as compared to postmodernism. Medium of pu$lication must now $e listed in e*ery entry of list of wor s cited, including designating whether it is 7rint or 'e$#$ased, or 7erformance, ,9 or 696. 0. ;mission of U<L!s for we$ pu$lications= unless entry is difficult to locate 2. 8igures, ta$les and captions do not use parenthetical citations.
