Studio-Strokes Manga Studio version 5 and 5-EX brush collection 1 ( + free set of Auto Actions)

This is my set of over 100 pens and brushes and special effects brushes for drawing and inking and hand lettering in Manga Studio 5. Your purchase allows you to use the brushes in any way you wish including commercial projects. But you are not allowed to re-distribute them neither as a whole nor individually. Free with the set also comes a set of Manga Studio Actions. Only 15 of these 100 brushes were available in my earlier small Taster sets of MS5 brushes on Deviant_Art . Those taster sets are no longer available. Nearly all of the brushes use the currently picked colours. Over half of them use both the first and second picked colours. For standard inking they assume that you will pick Black as your first colour and White as you second colour, but you can equally use them for full colour work. The best, and most fun, thing to do is to just try them. I hope some of them will surprise or amaze you. But a few are worth describing ( particularly if they need some special instruction to get the best effect)... Maru ::: my version of the soft sable like pen that came with version 4 J- Pen anf K-Pen ::: Named these in the style of the G-Pen but the J and K are homages to the legendary Jack Kirby. They are G-Pen and Maru pens with Attitude and capable of sharp corners Wierd ::: I love this pen.... anything you draw with it looks sinister DoWop ::: I have made several Kirby Krackle pens in the past, but this is the best Edger ::: A thin line that is both black and white... it will cut a visible line through any background. Great for drawing the dividing plates on aircraft or spaceships or armour. Perry88 ::: named and designed after my favourite real inking pen( A fairly rare English nib). Gives a constant thin line at lower pressures but when pressed harder it becomes more dynamic. Speedline and Focusline ::: MS5 does not have the filters for those effects that came with MS4... but these pens should bridge that gap. Draw a mass of Focus lines by drawing a hand drawn circle with the pen. Usually used with black, I also recommend picking White then setting the brush blending mode to Difference ... you

can then get some amazing focuslines , while speedline then makes good water and reflection effects. Other great focusline effects can be achieved with the SpotFeather brush that is also included. Fishnet ::: best used by creating a selection inside the outline of a leg then use this brush to draw the pattern. Press harder in the fatter parts of the leg and softer in the thinner parts of the leg. Needs some practise to get it right. Lightening::: use on a dark background... use to create lightening or bolts of energy StareFlare ::: pick white and paint on a dark background Bomb 4 and BoomBoom and BoomSpiky::: These brushes are for painting explosions. For Bomb4 draw lines away from the centre of the explosion. For BoomBoom draw the line as a circle around the centre of the explosion. To colour the explosion go to Edit> change Opacity to Transparency and then colour behind the explosion ( usually yellow near the centre and red further out). I have made the most appropriate adjustment settings for each brush visible in the sub-Tool Settings palette. In particular note that if there is a checkbox for Ribbon or Spray in that palette it probably means that there is a radically different effect additionally available with the pen by just clicking that option.

Instructions to Download and install The download is a Zip file that contains: These instructions A guide to the Set of Actions and Brushes Approximately 103 separate brush files. Each ends in .sut a file of Manga studio version 5 Actions called 888toto ink and letter Actions.laf

Extract (UnZip) the contents of the Zip file to a new folder on you PC or Mac. You can put them anywhere but remember where you put them. To install the Actions : 1. Open Manga Studio 5 or 5-EX and go to the Auto Actions palette.

2. Click the little icon in the top left corner of the palette. 3. In the drop down menu that appears select Import Set 4. In the finder windo that appears go to where you unpacked the zip file and select 888toto ink and letter Actions.laf Done !! To Install the brushes: Open Manga Studio 5 or 5-EX and click on a brush or pen The Subtool palette will then show a set of other pens or brushes that are available. You can quickly and easily add these new brushes to that set. 1) 2) Open the folder where you unpacked that zip file in Windows Exploere or Mac Finder Simply click and drag those .sut files to the Manga Studio Sub Tool palette and release the most to drop them their

You can drag and drop the files one at time or many at a time. If you want to add different brushes to different sets of pens and brushes then you will need to change the set that is currently displayed in the Sub Tool palette.

You can also load them ( slowly and individually) by right clicking on any existing brush and in the little menu that appears choose Import Brush You then navigate your way to the individual brush you want to install. This method however is quite slow.

The Actions that are supplied with this set are Outline : choose a layer and run this action. The content of the layer is reversed to a negative of itself and an outline is drawn around the content of the layer the action can be used multiple times on the same layer for different effects DoubleOutline: Drawns outlines separated by a white space around the content of the current layer. If you then hide the current layer then you just see the outline. This is particularly designed comic sound effects so that you can just render the outline of the BANG ! without obscuring too much of the underlying picture Button from Selection : Draw a selection then run this action to produced a raised button effect. DropShadow: action creates a drop shadow to the contents of the current layer The shadow is on a separate layer so no damage is done to the current layer Step Shadow: action creates a step-like shadow to the contents of the current layer The shadow is on a separate layer so no damage is done to the current layer LineFilter: Action converts a photograph image to a line drawing Line and Tone : converts a photograph image to a line drawing with added tones. It is best to use this one on an image that has just the one photo layer. If there are multiple layers then the results may be unpredictable.
