Petrel 2012 - the platform for E&P decision making

S
chlumberger is highlighting new features
available in the 2012 release of its Petrel
E&P software platfor m. The platfor m pro-
vides an integrated solution from exploration to
production. At its heart is the shared earth model;
with which users across the spectrum of E&P dis-
ciplines can integrate infor mation and expertise
into a robust reservoir representationand rap-
idly update their shared understanding through-
out the life of the field. The company says that,
on top of the potent integration capabilities in
the Petrel platfor m, the Studio E&P knowledge
environment increases productivity with a unique
data environment spanning the entire scope of
the Petrel workflow, stor ing data and captur ing all
infor mation; not just geoscience data, but static
and dynamic models, and associated knowledge.
The Ocean software development framework adds
unr ivalled extensibility, enabling fast and easy
building and deployment of best-in-class work-
flows to increase competitive advantage.
The Studio environment allows geoscientists
and engineers to search, preview and select data
across the entire infor mation landscape, in pro-
jects and database stores, as well as from com-
mercial data providersall in the context of their
Petrel project. Users can immediately see who
has worked on data, share voice notes, and engage
in further discussions by initiating a chat session.
With the Studio publish and subscr ibe model,
interpreters can test ideas, refine interpretations,
and push data when it is ready for others to ac-
cess and useensur ing the team is working only
on the latest validated data and interpretations.
Schlumberger says that the r igor of the database
coupled with the intuitive data awareness gives
users a far more productive working exper ience
than the legacy always-connected methodology.
In addition to enhanced prestack seismic inter-
pretation, Petrel 2012 introduces pre- and post-
stack simultaneous inversion, reservoir AVO mod-
eling, and a suite of processing tools developed by
WesternGeco, br idging interpretation and pro-
cessing workflows. Detailed structural interpreta-
tion capabilities help the interpreter visualize and
delineate complex geology. Edge detection and il-
lumination attr ibutescombined with interactive
reconstructionenable quick and easy validation
of structural interpretation. Petrel 2012 delivers a
powerful new seismic-dr iven modeling workflow,
incorporating multiple data types to generate
trends for property modeling, enabling a realistic
representation of reservoir geology for greater
confidence in reserves estimation.
Especially useful in shale and heavy oil reser-
voirs where high well counts are required, new
well pad design capabilities optimize well place-
ment from pads and well trajector ies. Multiple
wells are planned in minutes, taking into account
necessary field and surface parameters as well as
reservoir quality to evaluate var ious scenar ios
required to optimize well planning.
For the reservoir engineer, the Petrel 2012
software release features assisted history matching,
and introduces reservoir geomechanics. The Petrel
platfor m also provides comprehensive pre- and
post-processing workflows for the powerful IN-
TERSECT next-generation reservoir simulator,
which supports flexible, advanced field manage-
ment capabilities for all fluid types and recovery
processes. For more infor mation, go to www.slb.
