The assessment data that was used for student learning was a pre and post test of a rather

large Civil War lesson. The lesson was from the students Florida Studies Series and was part of a several lesson unit on how societies change. The students learned about important facts of the Civil War and how this war affected Florida and various battles that took place during this time period. I created my own seven question multiple-choice test based on the skills they needed to learn in the Civil War lesson. The questions that reside on the quiz are: What does the word abolitionist mean? Who was the president of the Confederacy? What began the Civil War? What is a blockade? Why was Florida known as the Breadbasket of the Confederacy? What were the Union troops trying to capture during the Battle of Natural Bridge? And who surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant and ended the civil war? The Pre-test was given to the students before I taught the lesson and the highest scores of 71 percent were received by two students out of the twenty-one. As you can see from these scores, the students had little to no background knowledge on this lesson and they were not familiar with the information. I realized for my instruction, I would need to specifically highlight the key areas of this lesson from my pre test and give the students many examples and discussion opportunities for information retention. During the lesson, I could see the students having their Aha and light bulb moments as they remembered that they had seen this information before the lesson in my test. Not every student had these moments but, with the various examples I gave with the lesson and longer discussions on the topics I could observe that the students understood the content. Once I passed

out the post test, the students were almost thrilled to see it as they said things like, I remember this, and I think I am going to pass this test now. Every student, except one, improved their post test scores and unfortunately the student who didnt improve did not get one answer right on the post test. I believe this data shows a good impact on student learning from my teaching even though one student received a zero on the post test. Eight students received a 100% on the post test, which I saw as an improvement and one of the eight students even told me they were not expecting to get a 100%. In that moment I thought about testing confidence and I told that student to give himself some credit because he works hard and his grades reflect that hard work. As far as any improvements go, especially for the one student who didnt do as well on the post test as she did on the pre-test, I thought the best way to handle this data is to talk one-onone with the student and see what else I could have done during this lesson. I thought that if I sat down with the student and talked about the test and how she felt during it might help me to see what happened or where I went wrong. I asked her how she felt about the post test before and after she took it and also if she really tried her best on it. I wasnt expecting her to give me a long answer but she really opened up to me about some problems she is having at school and how she knew she shouldve tried harder. She actually apologized to me because she knew this was for a project of mine. I really took this conversation to heart and from now on, if any student struggles with grades I will talk to them one-on-one to see what other factors may be affecting their school work. I am happy with the rest of the students post test scores because all of the students scored higher than their pre-test. While I monitored them taking the test, I could see that they

were all trying their very best and the results showed their hard work. I think one thing I could have done differently so that every student could have received a 100% was to have the students do more think-pair-share and group activities. I believe these strategies allow students to communicate their thoughts with their peers and see a different perspective on the information taught. Maybe, if the students had the chance to share their ideas, they would have all received a score of 100 percent on the post test. All in all, the student data shows a good improvement on their learning and the impact of the learning as well.
