The panto was based on the story o& 4lice in Wonderland and a truly entertainin' a&ternoon was en,oyed by those who attended the per&ormance @ the audience participation was especially popular! 4lice, .*esley %peed/ and 5ladys, 4lice-s mother .3eil 5aylard/ were especially 'ood, as was youn' 4lice and the dormouse, brilliant two youn' stars in the makin'! =ur &irst impressions were o& lots o& people, and very busy tra&&ic travellin' very &ast alon' wide tree@lined roads! 6t was hot and humid, but the waves breakin' on 0opacabana and 6panema beaches made one &eel cooler! These beaches are spectacular P very lon' stretches o& 'olden sand, and many 'ames o& beach volleyball! 3e7t day the tourist thin'! The -0hrist the Redeemer- statue looks very small &rom down in the city, but when you reach the top o& 0orcovado mountain it towers 1;#&t above you! 6t is made &rom concrete and soapstone and is amaOin' to look at, as are the views o& the city and coastline! Then we were taken to see the cathedral, which is cone shaped and has 4 &loor@to@ceilin' stained@'lass panels P one in each Euarter! 2inished in 1B9B, it is a truly spectacular buildin', beauti&ul, simple and meanin'&ul! 3e7t we went to %u'ar *oa& Mountain, so named because it resembles the old su'ar loaves! =ne cable car &rom the 'round to the top o& the &irst peak, then another to the top o& %u'ar *oa&! 3e7t day saw serious shoppin' at Rio %ul 0enter, a A storey shoppin' mall! There is so much choice o& clothes, shoes, ba's, 6T and electrical 'oods, with sun'lasses on every &loor! There is a &ood mall on each &loor, with &ood &rom every country in the world it seems! We also saw 2ather 0hristmas in his 'rotto! The &ollowin' day we visited the Botanical 5arden @ an area o& peace and tranEuillity in the very busy city! 6t was &ounded in the early 1Bth century and is a paradise o& very lar'e, very old trees, a pro&usion o& birds, and butter&lies the siOe o& one-s hand! We even saw toucans! Back in the city we walked alon' the characteristic pavements o& Rio, which are patterned with a white back'round and black waves usin' small mosaic tiles @ very memorable! We saw the Maracana &ootball stadium, which has been re&urbished &or the World 0up, and BraOil is very e7cited about the event ne7t year! 3ow it was the last day, and as our &li'ht wasn-t until midni'ht we went to %terns, who make beauti&ul ,ewellery! We were collected by car and taken to their emporium in 6panema, and shown how stones are cut, polished and set! We en,oyed seein' their immaculate work, and discovered that tourmaline is one o& the main 'ems o& BraOil, and comes in several tones o& pink, 'reen and blue! Then a sad 'oodbye to Rio! =n the way to the airport the temperature dropped and it was pourin' with rain! The weather seemed to want to help with the transition &rom BraOil to 1n'land!

The proli&eration o& de&ibrillators in the area is both commendable and breathtakin'! There are ; known installations @ at the %chool and the +layin' 2ields @ with one at Tatworth Memorial Hall in the process o& bein' &unded! 0learly their presence at hi'h activity areas like these is desirable but, with their value bein' in simple but e&&ective and immediate treatment, one has to wonder i& there are other locations which mi'ht also bene&it the community!
