The panto was based on the story o& 4lice in Wonderland and a truly entertainin' a&ternoon was en,oyed by those who attended the per&ormance @ the audience participation was especially popular! 4lice, .*esley %peed/ and 5ladys, 4lice-s mother .3eil 5aylard/ were especially 'ood, as was youn' 4lice and the dormouse, brilliant two youn' stars in the makin'! The Mad Hatter-s tea party must also be mentioned! 6t was very well per&ormed and colour&ul too! 5reat &un!! The narrator also 'ave a very 'ood per&ormance that we reco'nised as the White Rabbit! Tweedledum and Tweedledee caused much hilarity when they were on sta'e and the Cueen o& Hearts was very 'ood, especially her costume! 6 must say that the youn' members o& the cast played their parts so well and we shall certainly see more o& their talents in the &uture! The costumes worn this year must also be mentioned, they were brilliant, not only in colour but in desi'n as well and the scenery too was e7tremely e&&ective! We can look &orward to ne7t year with 'reat anticipation!

=ur &irst impressions were o& lots o& people, and very busy tra&&ic travellin' very &ast alon' wide tree@lined roads! 6t was hot and humid, but the waves breakin' on 0opacabana and 6panema beaches made one &eel cooler! These beaches are spectacular P very lon' stretches o& 'olden sand, and many 'ames o& beach volleyball! 3e7t day the tourist thin'! The -0hrist the Redeemer- statue looks very small &rom down in the city, but when you reach the top o& 0orcovado mountain it towers 1;#&t above you! 6t is made &rom concrete and soapstone and is amaOin' to look at, as are the views o& the city and coastline! Then we were taken to see the cathedral, which is cone shaped and has 4 &loor@to@ceilin' stained@'lass panels P one in each Euarter! 2inished in 1B9B, it is a truly spectacular buildin', beauti&ul, simple and meanin'&ul! 3e7t we went to %u'ar *oa& Mountain, so named because it resembles the old su'ar loaves! =ne cable car &rom the 'round to the top o& the &irst peak, then another to the top o& %u'ar *oa&! The en'ineerin' is incredible and the views &rom the top are breath@takin'!

3e7t day saw serious shoppin' at Rio %ul 0enter, a A storey shoppin' mall! There is so much choice o& clothes, shoes, ba's, 6T and electrical 'oods, with sun'lasses on every &loor! There is a &ood mall on each &loor, with &ood &rom every country in the world it seems! We also saw 2ather 0hristmas in his 'rotto! The &ollowin' day we visited the Botanical 5arden @ an area o& peace and tranEuillity in the very busy city! 6t was &ounded in the early 1Bth century and is a paradise o& very lar'e, very old trees, a pro&usion o& birds, and butter&lies the siOe o& one-s hand! We even saw toucans! Back in the city we walked alon' the characteristic pavements o& Rio, which are patterned with a white back'round and black waves usin' small mosaic tiles @ very memorable! We saw the Maracana &ootball stadium, which has been re&urbished &or the World 0up, and BraOil is very e7cited about the event ne7t year! 3ow it was the last day, and as our &li'ht wasn-t until midni'ht we went to %terns, who make beauti&ul ,ewellery! We were collected by car and taken to their emporium in 6panema, and shown how stones are cut, polished and set! We en,oyed seein' their immaculate work, and discovered that tourmaline is one o& the main 'ems o& BraOil, and comes in several tones o& pink, 'reen and blue! Then a sad 'oodbye to Rio! =n the way to the airport the temperature dropped and it was pourin' with rain! The weather seemed to want to help with the transition &rom BraOil to 1n'land!

We were in&ormed that a be'innerMs course in computin' was bein' arran'ed, to be run by 5raeme :oy! 3ames were submitted by those interested in takin' part! ates are yet to be arran'ed! :ohn 0rabb was welcomed by 4n'ela to 'ive his talk on TBirds in 2li'ht,M be'innin' by tellin' us a story o& how he became a wildli&e photo'rapher! He was a university physicist be&ore retirement and, because he had always been interested in wildli&e, particularly birds, he decided he would like to capture ima'es o& birds in &li'ht! 4&ter several earlier attempts he mana'ed to photo'raph some absolutely spectacular close up pictures, showin' in detail the &ormation o& &li'ht &eathers @ a miracle o& en'ineerin'! :ohn showed us an amaOin' picture o& a &riendly Robin &eedin' &rom his hand, which he had taken with incredible patience and which was printed in the aily Mail in ;#1#! 4n enthusiastic and eloEuent speaker, he concluded his talk with a series o& beauti&ul ima'es which were special to him &or their art &orm, in pattern, colour and shape! *inda Tucker thanked :ohn, and said she was overwhelmed by his artistry and she wouldnMt look at birds in Euite the same way a'ain!
