Report review: Existing and anticipated technology strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Koreas petrochemical and

steel industries, (Su Yol ee, !"#$% &he report will 'e review a'out the study on examines the existing and anticipated technology strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Koreas petrochemical and steel industries 'y Su Yol ee (!"#$%( )ne of the most important issue that 'een faced 'y many industries especially petrochemical is on glo'al warming, which is causes 'y greenhouse gas emissions that emit from the ma*or industries, petrochemical and steel industries( &he approach on solving the pro'lem had 'een announced 'y Korea and +hina recently in reducing the greenhouse gas (,-,% emissions 'y $" . the 'usiness as usual level 'y !"!" and car'on intensity 'y /" . /0 . 'elow !""0 levels, respectively( 1 technologies option is set to reduce the ,-, emissions which had 'een discussed in the previous studies( 0 technologies option had 'een set which can 'e considered as the effective ways to reduce the ,-, emissions( &he options are the energy saving option, process innovation option, energy source su'stitution, material su'stitution and ,-, treatment( ,raph 'elow shown the data analysis considering of these option, which 'een applied especially on ma*or industries that emit ,-, emissions, petrochemical and steel industries( &he results of the descriptive analysis indicate the ways in which each technology option was adopted and implemented 'y the petrochemical and steel industries in Korea(

2igure: 1nticipated changes in the adoption of technology options(

2rom the graph, it shows that the petrochemical industry was more li3ely to prefer the energy4saving and process innovation options( Energy saving options is clearly 'een adopted in such industries since the needs of energy is intensive, and related much with the costs and profits of the company in the related industries( Study done 'y Su Yol ee, !"#$ emphasi5ed on reducing the ,-, emissions through existing type of strategies(

Existing type of strategies used ,-, emissions reduction &he results of the cluster analysis identify three types of technology strategies employed 'y the sample firms for reducing ,-, emissions( $ types of existing strategies which are6 7ait and see strategy 8n process focused strategy 1ll round strategy

&he ta'le 'elow shows the results from the technology option used 'y the firms and the num'er of cases according to existing type of strategies(

7ait and see strategy 1s mention in the study 'y Su Yol ee (!"#$%, this strategy shows that the firms did not ta3e serious a'out the ,-, emissions( &his is 'ecause there is not much decision to ta3e and only shows a little interest especially when it comes to implementation of various technology options( So, this clusters is left 'ehind in terms of ,-, emissions approaches( 8n process4focused strategy 8n term of energy saving and technology options, this cluster shows the relatively high level of technology adoption which is the most among other strategies( 8n Koreas petrochemical and steel industries, this strategy had 'ecome the 3ey where option related to in process strategies is used to reduce ,-, emissions( 1ll round strategy &he group of firms that implement this type of strategies mostly engaged with the wide range of technology options( &his group li3ely to find the new and advanced technologies that a'le to reduce ,-, emissions efficiently, for example ,-, treatment technologies which is less prefera'le in technology options(

)ver time, due to the growth of petrochemical industries and demand of certain products, more strategies are anticipated to overcome green greenhouse gas emission(

&he treatment reliance energy showed average scores among three anticipated strategies( 7hen they faced pro'lems regarding greenhouse gas emission, this strategy wor3s in a way that they are reactive towards the pro'lem( &his is different compared to wait4and4see strategy( 7ait4and4see strategy is more passive(

8n'ound4su'stitution strategy suggests that raw materials su'stitution must 'e prioriti5ed( )n top of that, they also prioriti5e energy source su'stitution( &his strategy scores relatively high, meaning to say many firms or companies are anticipating for this 3ind of strategy to overcome greenhouse gas emission(

&he last strategy is all4round strategy6 anticipated all4round strategy is similar to the current all4round strategy( &he only difference 'etween current and anticipated all4 round strategy is that over time, technology will undergo certain changes and the factors within that period of time will 'e different too( &he all4round strategy is 'asically a strategy that considered a wide range of option, or loo3ing for solution for the pro'lem (greenhouse gas emission% in every angle possi'le(

2igure: anticipated changes in technology strategies +)99E:&S #( ;etrochemical wastes are usually complicated, sometimes a strategy is not

sufficient to overcome a case, and even though the pro'lem is similar which is greenhouse gas emission( !( 9any cases can 'e handled 'y in'ound4su'stitution energy, where people can

*ust change the raw materials so that the product will 'e less harmful( &hey also can redesign the energy source or heat integration to reduce the cost and also greenhouse gas emission( $( Sometimes one strategy is not enough to overcome the greenhouse gas

emission( 9eaning to say the raw materials su'stitution is not a good option, whether its not possi'le theoretically or theres no profit gained from raw materials su'stitution( 9ost of the company anticipated all4round strategy 'ecause it is more logical for their company that produce variety of products(
