Pedestrianism
When Watching People Walk Was Americas Favorite Spectator Sport
Matthew Algeo
Co-op available Advertising in the New York Review of Books and Mental_Floss magazine Strange as it sounds, during the 1870s and 1880s, Americas most popular spectator sport wasnt baseball, football, or horseracingit was competitive walking. Inside sold-out arenas, competitors walked around dirt tracks almost nonstop for six straight days (never on Sunday), risking their health and sanity to see who could walk the farthestmore than 500 miles. These walking matches were as talked about as the weather, the details reported in newspapers and telegraphed to fans from coast to coast. This long-forgotten sport, known as pedestrianism, spawned Americas first celebrity athletes and opened doors for immigrants, African Americans, and women. But along with the excitement came the inevitable scandals, charges of doping and insider gambling, and even a riot in 1879. Pedestrianism chronicles competitive walkings peculiar appeal and popularity, its rapid demise, and its enduring influence. Matthew Algeo is the author of Harry Trumans Excellent Adventure, Last Team Standing, and The President Is a Sick Man. An award-winning journalist, he has reported from three continents for public radios All Things Considered, Marketplace, and Morning Edition. He lives in Washington, DC.

Nuclear 2.0
Why a Green Future Needs Nuclear Power
Mark Lynas
A passionate appeal to environmentalists to embrace all the tools available that can tackle climate changethis book deserves to be read. David MacKay, FRS, chief scientific advisor to the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change The book is an absorbing read, but not a comfortable one. Economist on The God Species Authors previous books sold more than 30,000 copies By making use of the latest in world energy statistics, author Mark Lynas shows that with wind and solar still at only about one percent of global primary energy, looking to renewable energy as a solution to deliver all the worlds power is a dangerously delusional concept. Moreover, with no possibility reducing the worlds energy usagewhen the developing world is fast extricating itself from poverty and adding the equivalent of a new Brazil to the global electricity consumption each yearadditional solutions are needed. This book then details how the antinuclear movement of the 1970s and 1980s succeeded only in making the world more dependent on fossil fuels. Instead of making the same mistake again, this book shows how all those who want to see a low-carbon future need to join forces by backing an ambitious proposal for a combined investment in wind, solar, and nuclear power. Mark Lynas is an environmental writer and campaigner. He is a visiting research associate at Oxford Universitys school of geography and the environment, and vice-chair of the World Economic Forums Global Agenda Council on Emerging Technologies. He was the climate advisor to the president of the Maldives from 2009 to 2011 and is the author of The God Species, High Tide, and Six Degrees.

Excerpt: The primary outcome of the Cyberwar campaign is mass anxiety, where people become so apprehensive and uneasy that theyll accept any solution to feel safe again. This is convenient because the solutions being proposed by the Cyberwar crowd harken back to the Cold War. Theres a heavy emphasis on massive retaliation and Orwellian surveillance schemes, neither of which are constructive approaches. These supposed remedies would only channel vast sums of money to the defense industry and further infringe on our civil liberties by enhancing government control. Theres a very real effort afoot to create the perception of an imminent and grave threat. A public that feels panicky will pay dearly to make the anxiety go away, much to the benefit the same people stoking the coals of alarm. What society needs to do is to collectively step back, take a deep breath, and approach the topic from a more rational frame of mind. As far as the domain of politics is concerned, propaganda and secrecy will always exist as means to sabotage decision making. In countries like the United States, however, which have provisions for freedom of speech there are opportunities to shed light on complicated topics.

Big Boy
Chris Christies Appetite for Power
Louis Michael Manzo
In this searing tell-all, former New Jersey State Assemblyman Louis Manzo recounts an extraordinary tale of political ruthlessness, corruption, and greed while also telling the story of being caught in the center of one of the most egregious political scandals in modern-day history: the Bid Rig III sting operation masterminded by Governor Chris Christie. Manzo discusses how the blind ambitions of Christie and his staff entailed capturing a governorship and the patronage jobs that accompany it, and then parlaying that office into a shot at the presidency. Big Boy then makes the convincing case for how the governor is not the champion of reform he is depicted as, but rather a sinister political figure deftly vying for a seat in the Oval Office, making this book a must-read for anyone with an interest in the 2016 presidential election. Louis Michael Manzo is a former state assemblyman and the author of Gods Earth Also Cries. He lives in Belmar, New Jersey.

Excerpt: The buried truth of how Christies prosecutors corrupted the Bid Rig III investigation to help tilt the gubernatorial election in his favor would soon surface. Department of Justice staffseemingly in the New Jersey District United States Attorneys Office would play the role of a deep throat and out the corruption. The truth was ugly and it gave a glimpse of the depth of depravity that prosecutors stooped to in violating their oaths of office in order to cash in on Christies promises of jobs. It started to unravel for prosecutors a few short weeks after the arrests went down. The Associated Press would report that Ralph Marra was facing an internal ethics investigation over public comments that may have helped his ex-boss campaign for governor, law enforcement officials told The Associated Press today. During one of the nonstop press conferences on the day of the sting, when asked about corruption in New Jersey, the man who was inline to be tapped by Christie as the Senior Vice President of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authorities, said: There are easily reforms that could be made within this state that would make our job easier, or even take some of the load off our job. There are too many people that profit off the system the way it is and so they have no incentive to change it. The few people that want to change it seem to get shouted down. So how long that cycles going to continue I just dont know. The Department of Justice has strict guidelines cautioning that prosecutors shall refrain from making extrajudicial comments that pose a serious and imminent threat of heightening public condemnation of the accused.

Servitors of Empire
Studies in the Dark Side of Asian America
Darrell Y. Hamamoto
Forcing a fundamental rethinking of the Asian American elite, many of whom have attained top positions in business, government, academia, sciences, and the arts, this book will be certain to generate a good deal of controversy and honest discussion regarding the role Asian Americans will play in the new century as China and India loom ever larger in the world economic system. Not since the large-scale infusion of scientists and engineers fleeing Nazi Germany has there been such a mass importation of intellectual labor from U.S. client states in Asia. One of the specialized tasks assigned to this group is to build the technetronic infrastructure for the new world order command and control system. Servitors of Empire is not intended to fan the flames of suspicion and paranoia aimed at Asian Americans, but serves to illuminate the way in which highly trained knowledge workers are being employed to bring sovereign nations such as the United States under centralized rule made possible through advances in bioscience, IT, engineering, and global finance. Darrell Y. Hamamoto is a professor in the department of Asian American studies at the University of CaliforniaDavis. He is the author of Monitored Peril: Asian Americans and the Politics of TV Representation, Nervous Laughter: Television Situation Comedy and Liberal Democratic Ideology, and New American Destinies: A Reader in Contemporary Asian and Latino Immigration. Autistic Indifference
The Reason Our Children Keep Getting Sick
Jon E. Mica
Stressing that autism is a major public health crisis of unequalled proportions, this book accuses the federal government of refusing to acknowledge it as such and having a corrupt and morally unsound relationship with Big Pharma. First noting the dramatic rise in cases of autism in the United States since the 1970s, Autistic Indifference then discusses the rampant misuse and dangers associated with vaccinations. Additionally, the book argues that the Center for Disease Control has lied to the American public by presenting inaccurate data on annual flu deaths and, along with the Vaccine Safety Datalink, has buried damaging research on the perils of vaccines. Written by a parent of a child suffering from autism, this book is a must-read for anyone concerned with the neurological brain disorder. Jon E. Mica is a writer and the father of a son who has been diagnosed with autism. He lives in Auburn, New York.

Nicolas De Crcy
De Crcys art is breathtaking, he lives up to his reputation as a mad genius with this amusing work. Booklist A clever upending of the resilient myth that masterworks of art preserve the history and spirit of their era; the meaning of art, De Crcy suggests, belongs to the people who experience it. Washington Post Co-op available New in cloth In this fanciful and richly imaginative story, one of the most original and important young European comic artists imagines a frozen world thousands of years hence in which all human history has been forgotten. A small group of archaeologists come upon the Louvre, buried in age-old snow, and cannot begin to explain all of the artifacts they see. Their interpretations of the wonders before them strike a humorous, absurd, and farcical tone. One of the few books coedited by the Louvre, this graphic novel features stunning illustrations as it presents a unique vision of the great museum. My Vision for the Future of Israel
MK Rabbi Dov Lipman
[Lipman] deserve[s] appreciation for [his] activities which seek to build bridges of unity, understanding, and tolerance between the religious and nonreligious populations in Israel. [His] public actions serve as an example of responsible rabbinic work which adds honor to the Jewish nation and to the State of Israel and reflects the deep ethics and morals of Judaism in its glory. Shimon Peres, president of Israel Co-op available Exploring the issues of the separation between religion and state in Israel, this book by Knesset parliament member Rabbi Dov Lipman lays out his vision for the future. Lipman was elected to the Yesh Atid party, which, though largely secular, calls for a more moderate and open form of Judaism. His is a voice of reason in the religious debates and battles that have threatened to undermine Jewish unity in Israel and around the world. Lipman has observed firsthand the polarization, extremism, and discrimination that have been on the upswing in Israel, and his book examines specific practical issues rather than general theological questions in the Israeli political scene. As the only ultra-Orthodox member of the current coalition, he offers a unique insight into the internal societal struggles of the Jewish community as well as the hope for a better future for both Israel and Jews around the world. Excerpt: People tell me that I am dreaming if I believe that we can create unity amongst the Jewish people in Israel. My response to those doubters is clear and to the point. Growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, we used to take the short ride to Washington, DC a few times a year to demonstrate on behalf of Russian Jewry in front of the Soviet Embassy. During one of those protests, someone handed me a sign to hold up in silent demonstration. The sign read: Free Yuli Edelstein. Today, decades later, I sit in the Knesset chamber as a member of the Israeli parliament and in the front of the room sits the speaker of the KnessetYuli Edelstein. Dreams can come true. We just have to believe in ourselves and believe in mans capacity to accomplish the impossible. King David wrote that in our return to Zion we are like dreamers. Living in the land of Israel is a dream.

Excerpt: I love to give and receive gifts. I enjoy the suspense of the unwrapping, the strengthened relationship that can emerge, and the opportunity to provide another with something new that they didnt expect to receive. After all, life is about giving and giving gifts is just another way to fulfill our purpose. Over the years, however, Ive been struggling to decide how to approach my annual Chanukah gift buying, and how I can best raise my sensitivities to give better. I wonder how valuable it is to spend so many hours (and hundreds of dollars) shopping for gifts, only to find myself often feeling worse at the end of the day. Further, Im turned off each year by the parts of our gift culture, such as aggressive competitiveness, that come with the holiday sales. Two of my favorite stores were involved in an alleged riot over $2 waffle irons at a Little Rock Wal-Mart and a pepper-spray attack over discounted Xbox games. We can seek to repair how we give to others at the holiday time. The root of the Hebrew word for love (ahava) is hav, which means to give. When we give to another, we can come to love that individual more. This is why a parent generally loves a child more than the child can love the parent. When we allow others to give to us, we can allow them to love us.

Kaddish
Womens Voices
Edited by Michal Smart and Barbara Ashkenas
In addition to providing a dynamic view of feminism and Judaism, the collection coheres as a community of women experienced in mourning as a human sensibility, opening the titular theme to others who may feel alone in their bereavement. Francisca Goldsmith, Booklist Co-op available For centuries, Jews have turned to the Mourners Kaddish prayer upon experiencing a loss. This groundbreaking book explores what the recitation of Kaddish has meant specifically to women. Did they find the consolation, closure, and community they were seeking? How did saying Kaddish affect their relationships with God, with prayer, with the deceased, and with the living? With courage and generosity, 52 authors from around the world reflect upon their experiences of mourning. They share their relationships with the family members they lost and what it meant to move on; how they struggled to balance the competing demands of child rearing, work, and grief; what they learned about tradition and themselves; and the disappointments and particular challenges they confronted as women. The collection shares viewpoints from diverse perspectives and backgrounds and examines what it means to heal from loss and to honor memory in family relationships, both loving and fraught with pain. It is a precious record of women searching for their place within Jewish tradition and exploring the connections that make human life worthwhile. Michal Smart is a founder of the TEVA Learning Center and the coauthor of Spirit in Nature: Teaching Judaism and Ecology on the Trail. On the Relationship of Mitzvot Between Man and His Neighbor and Man and His Maker
Daniel Sperber
Co-op available This study seeks to examine the relationship between the two major categories of commandments (mitzvot): ritual commands (between man and his Maker) and social interpersonal commands (between man and his neighbor). It is argued here that when there is a clash between these two categories, and one cannot carry out both, the interpersonal mitzvot almost always override those of a ritual nature. Different scenarios from a broad spectrum of Jewish law are cited to prove this contention, and the conclusion is underscored through the examination of the behavior and rulings of several leading Jewish legal authorities. Finally, the implications of this conclusion and their impact on religious educational direction and rationale are also discussed. Daniel Sperber is a leading scholar of Jewish law, customs, and ethics. He has taught in the Talmud department of Bar-Ilan University, was the dean of the faculty of Jewish studies, and serves as the president of the Jesselson Institute for Advanced Torah Studies. The incumbent of the Milan Roven Chair of Talmudic Research, he received the Israel Prize in 1992 for his research in Talmud and the history of Jewish customs, and served as the chairman of the Council for Religious Education at the Israel Ministry of Education for a decade. He has published 30 booksincluding a well-known eight-volume series, Minhagei Yisrael, on the history of Jewish customsand more than 400 articles on the subjects of Talmudic and Jewish socioeconomic history, law and customs, classical philology, and Jewish art.

Excerpt: How did we get here? Put simply and starkly, we tried to pursue a humanist project of understanding and uplifting human life, and in the process identified God as largely an obstacle, even an enemy. So we tried to root him out, to create consistent systems that preserved all the good things wed come to take for granted in Western society, while excising any reference to transcendent underpinnings. We tried to build the steeple on the temple of humanity with steel ripped from its foundations. Predictably, the whole tower collapsed, in the muck and the killing fields of the twentieth century. It is now clear to honest thinkers that you cannot keep on believing in human dignity without some transcendent reference point. We cant pull ourselves up out of the animal kingdom by our bootstraps, any more than an alcoholic can claw his way out of the drunk tank without a higher power. We cant even teach ourselves to see other people as ends rather than means, unless we all agree on some ultimate Meaning thats more important than what feels good, then doing it.

Anatomy of Misremembering
Von Balthasars Response to Philosophical Modernity. Volume 1: Hegel
Cyril ORegan
ORegans telling of this theological story is nothing less than a tour d force! John Thiel, professor of religious studies, Fairfield University Co-op available Advertising in First Things, Theological Digest, and Theology Today This compelling work is the most comprehensive and sophisticated account to date of the relationship between Hans Urs von Balthasara Swiss theologian and Catholic priestand the German philosopher Georg Hegel. While underscoring the depth and breadth of Balthasars engagement with the philosopher, author Cyril ORegan argues that Balthasar is the most concertedly anti-Hegelian theologian of the 20th century. For him, it is essential to engage Hegel because of his corrections of sclerotic forms of premodern Christian thought, but even more importantly to resist and correct his systematic thought, which represents a comprehensive misremembering of the Christian thought, practices, and forms of life. An important and original work, this book addresses a topic that puts the possibility of an authentic postmodern theology at stake. Cyril ORegan is the Huisking Chair of Theology at the University of Notre Dame where he teaches on the subjects of systematic, historical, and philosophical theology. His writings have been widely published and he is the author of Gnostic Apocalypse, Gnostic Return in Modernity, and The Heterodox Hegel. He lives in Notre Dame, Indiana.

Excerpt: The story of Abraham is important so it is remembered and taught. The stories of Sarah, Hagar and the other women recorded in the Bible are equally important and interesting. There are no patriarchs without matriarchs. There are no church fathers without church mothers. It is time to celebrate the matriarchs and mothers of our faith. It is time to ask ourselves, Why do we believe what we believe? In 1976, historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich coined the phrase, Well-behaved women seldom make history. Although women have contributed significantly to every culture, their contributions, until recently, have rarely been recorded or remembered. Well-behaved women remain in the private sphere out of the public eye. The Hebrew Bible mentions a total of 1,426 names, of which 1,315 are those of men. Thus, only 111 womens names appear, about 9 percent of the total. Where are all the other women? Well-behaved women are those who do not cross the religious, social or cultural barriers. There must have been more than 111 women crossing those religious, social and cultural barriers. The women who appear in the Hebrew Scriptures figured prominently in the stories of men. The women in Jesus genealogy, family, circle of friends and public works whose names, voices and thoughts are recorded, must have been remarkable. They were women who did not stay in the private sphere behind religious, social and cultural barriers. Their stories have been hidden or distorted by centuries of male-dominated interpretation. It is generally assumed that the biblical writers were male. What would the stories sound like if women told their own? The stories of the women presented here may be unfamiliar to the reader. I suggest the reader have her/his favorite biblical translation handy. The chapter and verse for each womans story is recorded before the re-creation to make finding each woman easier.

Excerpt: Religions usually grow out of some revolutionary impulse initiallyin the beginning they may attempt to address racial or ethnic discrimination or economic inequality. However, as time goes on they invariably choose stability over all else, even at the expense of the ongoing spiritual evolution of humankind. Having woken us up initially, they allow us to grow drowsy again, sometimes for decades or centuries on end. To rouse itself from inertia, it is sometimes necessary for religion to reinvent itself through the work of revolution or reform, and I have no doubt that American Buddhism will do just that, modernizing those teachings which have come to it mostly in pre-modern form so that they address not just the need for peace of mind or an enhanced immune system but the need for a more equitable distribution of wealth and basic human rights for all. What distinguishes the Soka Gakkai from other Buddhist traditions in America is that it arrived on U.S. shores in the 1960s with that work largely accomplished. How did the Soka Gakkai accomplish what no other Buddhist school has, either in Japan or anywhere else? How has it managed to institutionalize the revolutionary impulse so that, rather than settling back into the

predictable mediocrity of a successful religion, it has spread across the globe? What is the driving force that has sustained the Soka Gakkai and preserved its unity as it has traveled to so many other countries and cultures around the world? How has it made the leap from national religious organization to international spiritual movement? My interest in answering these questions has less to do with the Soka Gakkai itself and more to do with my desire to discover what comes next for religion itself as we transition into a new millennium. For what the Soka Gakkai has discovered isnt just a new form of Buddhism. Its a new way of being religious.

Dance of Death
The Life of John Fahey, American Guitarist
Steve Lowenthal Foreword by David Fricke
Co-op available Advertising in American Songwriter, Blurt, and No Depression magazines John Fahey is to the solo acoustic guitar what Jimi Hendrix was to the electric: the man whom all subsequent musicians had to listen to. Fahey made more than 40 albums between 1959 and his death in 2001, most of them featuring only his solo steel-string guitar. He fused elements of folk, blues, and experimental composition, taking familiar American sounds and recontextualizing them as something entirely new. Yet despite his stature as a groundbreaking visionary, Faheys intentionsas a man and as an artistremain largely unexamined. Journalist Steve Lowenthal has spent years researching Faheys life and music, talking with his producers, his friends, his peers, his wives, his business partners, and many others. He describes Faheys battles with stage fright, alcohol, and prescription pills; how he ended up homeless and mentally unbalanced; and how, despite his troubles, he managed to found a record label that won Grammys and remains critically revered. This portrait of a troubled and troubling man in a constant state of creative flux is not only a biography but also the compelling story of a great American outcast. Steve Lowenthal started and ran the music magazine Swingset; his writing has also been published in Fader, Spin, Vice, and the Village Voice. He ran the record label Plastic for five years and currently runs the VDSQ label, which specializes in solo instrumental acoustic guitar music. He lives in New York City. David Fricke is a senior editor at Rolling Stone magazine.

Guardian Co-op available Advertising in AMP, Maximumrocknroll, and Razorcake The product of years of research, travel, and countless conversations, Burning Britain is the true story of the UK punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and labels that created it. Covering the country region by region, author Ian Glasper profiles legendary bands like Vice Squad, Angelic Upstarts, Blitz, Anti-Nowhere League, Cockney Rejects, and the UK Subs as well as more obscure groups like Xtract, The Skroteez, and Soldier Dolls through hundreds of new interviews and photographs. As the 1970s closed the media was quick to declare punk dead, but a new generation of even more aggressive and political bands were announcing their presence through some of the most primal and potent music ever committed to plastic. This book is the definitive guide to that previously overlooked era. Ian Glasper is a writer, the founder of the now-defunct Blackfish Records, which released 20 punk, hardcore, and metalcore albums, and a member of many DIY punk bands. He is the author of Armed with Anger and Trapped in a Scene: UK Hardcore 19851989.

Excerpt: Fortunately, learning about classical music does not require anything like the time, talent, or dedication it takes to play it. The purpose of this book, in other words, is not to turn you into a Pavarottiwannabee, but simply to heighten your enjoyment as a listener. For starters, let's look at some of the basic elements that go into classical music. Rhythm is the heartbeat of music, propelling it forward. Just as there is rhythm to almost every human activity, from breathing to walking, the pulse of music often defines its character. There is the flowing measure of Gregorian chant, the precise and ordered cadences of a baroque concerto, and the syncopated beat of a Scott Joplin rag. A melody is a succession of single notes varying in pitch and strung together to form a satisfying entity. When you leave "The King and I" whistling a happy tune, that's the melody. When a Schubert song tugs at your heartstrings, or you have an uncontrollable urge to hum along with the "Full Moon and Empty Arms" theme of the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto, the composer has succeeded in creating a melody to remember. Harmony is the simultaneous sounding of two or more notes. It enriches the sound of a melody, accentuates changing rhythmic patterns, and gives classical music its special richness and resonance. Aaron Copland said, "It represents one of the most original conceptions of the human mind."

I Am a Card Counter
Inside the World of Advantage-Play Blackjack!
Frank Scoblete
Co-op available Authors previous books sold more than 85,000 copies With the help of the easy-to-master steps in this book, even a novice gambler can go from being a traditional blackjack player to a card counteran advantage player with a true edge over the house. For a dozen years, Frank Scoblete was a devastating card counter, consistently beating casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Tunica, Mississippi and angering the casino bosses by knowing more about how to win money than almost anyone who ever challenged a casino. He employed sophisticated methods, including card-counting and little-known advantage-play techniques to turn the tables on the house. Now Frank, known as an icon of the gambling industry, shares with readers everything he knows about beating casinos at blackjack, including techniques for one, two, four, six, and eight deck games such as end play, the fat finger method, card groupings, and several card counting systems that are easy to learn, but powerful and effective to play. I Am a Card Counter is an essential resource for any gambler looking to succeed at the blackjack table. Frank Scoblete is an authority on gambling. His DVDs, articles, websites, television shows, and bestselling books have helped millions of people become better casino players. He lives in Malverne, New York.

Excerpt: I spent every afternoon and many nights playing hands on the dining room table. I dealt myself round after round after round of hands; keeping the running count, converting to the true count, and betting accordingly. I played four-deck games, six-deck games, and even eight-deck games, which were starting to take over Atlantic City. The more decks, the more patience you must have as the counts change somewhat slowly. The casino generally has a higher edge the more decks a game contains. I did learn certain things that served me well. There are many false notions held by many advantage-blackjack players. One has to do with how fast you can count down a deck of cards. You just keep flipping the cards over as fast as you can to see if you can count down the deck properly. Some blackjack teams actually use this as a test of how good a card counter is. At first I thought this was important and I would practice counting down a single deckbam, bam, bam, bam. Then I watched games in the casino and realized that even the fastest of the fastest dealers were actually pretty slow. The key was not to watch the dealer scurrying through his cards but simply to watch the cards on the table. The dealer could not deal like the superhero Flash, and those cards sat on the table for a sufficiently long enough time to have no problem counting them. It was nothing like the bam, bam, bam, bam of counting down a single deck. You just keep your eyes on the cards and not on the dealers motions. Gamblers have myths about playjust about all of those myths being wrongbut so do advantage players. Belief systems can make you see what you want to see. Counting down a single deck in a few seconds does not have any real meaning in a real game. The speed of blackjack games is actually easy to handle. I would say that all blackjack games are relatively slow, even the ones everyone thinks are fast. Dont watch the dealer, just watch the cards. Once I had a handle on how to play and I knew I was good, I told the Beautiful A.P., I want you to learn blackjack. I want us to eventually become a team. I want us to take it to the casinos.

Excerpt: Off the field, thousands of jobs were imperiled. Tens of thousands of workers whose jobs depend on baseball were huge losers as what would become the longest strike in professional sports continued. It reached deep into our society. Its a game that has created untold jobs and revenuefrom the concession operators to ticket takers to grounds crews to all the licensed merchandise that is sold. And then there is the tax revenue generated from all of the above, not to mention the taxes the teams and players themselves pay. The players believed that a third-party solution had a chance to be closer to the proposals owners repeatedly rejected. They wanted Clinton to hear their views as directly as possible. They took a heckuva shot that night to try to settle the issues. Thats why it went on and on and why we stayed there for such a long time, said David Cone. President Clinton was in and out of our sessions, trying to balance this with other pressing issues. Al Gore seemed to take the lead and Stephanopoulous facilitated the individual meetingstwo on twos, three on threes, breaking groups down trying to get things done. George was working the mechanism behind the scenes. Stephanoupoulos said, I wasnt a negotiator, just one of the White House representatives trying to facilitate the sessions more than anything else. Pausing and staring off into space, Cone said I almost felt embarrassed, telling the president, Weve taken up too much of your time. At one point, Clinton walked by and quipped, Its just a few hundred folks trying to figure out how to divide nearly $2 billion. They ought to be able to figure that out.

Excerpt from the foreword: It is a special pleasure to introduce this book about my father. Rob Goldman is a close family friend who knew Dad back in their days with the Angels, when Rob was a batboy for the team. His biography covers territory and issues not explored by other Nolan Ryan books. For one, it weaves together my fathers personality with his achievements in a way never presented before. It shows how Dads work ethic, his no-nonsense Texas character, his openness to new ideas about training, and, most significantly, his relationship to my mother, all worked together to enable him to achieve what most thought was impossiblepitching for 27 seasons at the top of his game, throwing seven no-hitters, amassing 5,714 strikeouts, and achieving 324 victories. The way Rob went about researching The Making of a Pitcher gives the book a depth that makes it a classic. He spent five years interviewing those who coached, trained, and played with and against Nolan. In this book are eyewitness accounts of key moments as viewed from the field, the press box, and the stands. Robs personal stories about time shared in the dugout and at home on the ranch reveal so much about how my parents feel about each other, and about their concept of friendship and loyalty. They also shine a very welcome light on the character of my parents. I am glad to see dads story told so fully, and to see my mother given her rightful place beside him. This is a treasure for our family, as I expect it will be for Nolan Ryan fans and for anyone who wants to better understand the game and how my dad helped to change it during his long career.

The Chris Nilan Story
Chris Nilan
Co-op available Chris Nilan, who grew up in the tough and gritty Irish enclave in Boston, was a feared enforcer for the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers and a Stanley Cup champion never afraid to go into the corners or take off his gloves. He was a valued teammate whose very presence on the ice affected the way the game was played. As an enforcer and as a teammate, Nilan ranks among the greatest of all time; when the cheering stopped, however, Chris Nilan did not do well. The same qualitieshis aggressiveness and high-emotion stylethat proved so valuable on the ice did not serve him well when his career ended. Nilan turned to drugs and alcohol to dull his pain and nearly died from an overdose. His story is a fascinating and troubling expos of the booze, bills, and drugs that destroy so many athletes after their careers are over. But its also a story of triumph, as Nilan has been the victor in his fight against his demons. Chris Nilan played right wing in 688 NHL regular season games for the Montreal Canadiens, the Boston Bruins, and the New York Rangers. He racked up more than 3,000 penalty minutes during his pro career and was the subject of the documentary The Last Gladiator. He lives in Montreal.

Excerpt: I laid the small object on the back of my hand to study it. Even though I had now lived many summers, perhaps as many as could be numbered on three hands, I was still ashamed of my pale skin and my fiery hair and the spray of tiny brown spots on my nose and cheeks. Long ago, when I was small, I had given up putting ashes on my hair to make it black, because the other girl-children had mocked me worse than before. But I still had the habit of hiding the palms of my hands as much as possible, for they remained even paler than the rest of my body because they had not been darkened by the sun. The object lying on my wrist was as big as a mans eye, but perfectly round, like the full moon. It was the color of dark sand, and no thicker than the thick edge of the comeback boomerang the boy-children played with, yet it was hard as stone, and as strong. I could not bend it. On the face of the strange object somebody had carved a tiny picture of a sitting-down person holding a spear with three points. When I looked closely I felt sure this was a woman, and I laughed because she had a funny kind of bowl upside down on her head. I turned the object over and found that almost the whole of the other side carried a carving of a womans head . . . .
I had heard, too, that far away where the edge of the world touched the great waters there were many new tribes who had come out of the waters and onto the land. Their skins were white and they wore coverings on their bodies all the year round, but these were not fashioned from possum or kangaroo skins, like the cloaks we wore on cold nights, and they could not have been woven from human hair, like the girdle I wore with its tassel of emu feathers, for no such quantity of human hair could exist. Sometimes, in secret, I wondered if it might be possible for me to live among one of these tribes.

Excerpt: Even before we reached the top of the Chak Pass, I saw the tall figure of Sembur begin to sway in the saddle, and knew that his heart was labouring badly in the thin air. A chill deeper than the coldness of the mountain winds touched my own heart, for Sembur was all I had. When I came up beside Sembur I reached out to grasp his arm and spoke in the tongue that only he and I knew, the tongue he had taught me from the beginning. In time to come I was to discover that I spoke it with a very bad accent, but at this time, when I was in my thirteenth year, I had never heard it on the lips of anyone but Sembur, and so I spoke the strange tongue just as he did. Sembur called it Hinglish, and was himself a Hinglishman, which meant that he came from a country on the other side of the world.

A Novel
John Barker
In this fast-paced, streetwise take on eighties London, boundaries blur between the cocaine trade and newly deregulated financial markets. . . . Barkers portrait of a cynical, money-hungry culture skewers a moment in history that for good or ill (and mostly for ill) made Britain what it is today. Hari Kunzru, author, The Impressionist and Memory Place The prose grabs you by the throat and squeezes. The characters are by turns reckless, ambitious, vulnerable, and weak. The story is set in the past but couldnt be more relevant. Futures is funny, frightening, and very dark. Ronan Bennett, author, The Catastrophist Co-op available Carol is a single mother and small-time cocaine dealer in 1987 London. Among her customers is Phil, a financial analyst in the City who, in the haze of a coke binge, fantasizes with longtime friend and fellow analyst Jack about a cocaine futures market. When the scheme becomes a reality, Carol has an opportunity to go for a big deal that could be her ticket out of the business altogether, but that could also bring her into direct conflict with Gordon Murray and his brothers, the men at the top of the wholesale business who are prepared to do whatever it takes to stay there. Adding to the drama are a stock market crash that creates havoc, and a once-in-a-lifetime hurricane that sweeps across London, jeopardizing the communications system of the stock market itself. Carol is about to find herself at the intersection where three very different worlds are about to collide in this gripping crime novel. John Barker is a writer and book indexer. He is the author of Bending the Bars, a memoir of the time he spent in prison as a result of a conviction for conspiring to cause explosions.

Times Tasked to protect the vital, threatened Merchant Navy convoys in the Western Approaches, Howard finds himself in the middle of the Battle of the Atlantica full-scale war that was a relentless, savage battle against an ever-present enemy and a violent sea in an arena known to embittered survivors simply as the killing ground. This fictionalized account of the Battle of the Atlantic, which spanned nearly six years and was the longest military campaign of World War II, is seen through both British and German eyes and deals with the extreme perils of war at sea and stands as an excellent study in leadership with characters that ring true. Douglas Reeman has written more than 30 novels under his own name, including The Glory Boys, The Iron Pirate, Killing Ground, and Sunset, as well as the Richard Bolitho Novels series under the pseudonym Alexander Kent.

Even as a maid in the infamous Kremlin, life in 16th-century Russia is bleak and treacherous. That is, until Taras arrives. Convinced that his mothers death when he was a boy was no mere accident, he returned from England to discover what really happened. Excerpt: When dreaming wasnt enough, then I knew I missed her. I carried her card around until it got dirty and sweaty from being pushed and pulled in and out of my pocket. I didnt know what to do, and had no intention of writing anything that I wasnt told to do, like a book report. After two days of worrying about this, I bought a post card at Schottensteins Drug Store, which became Discount Drug and Market before it became a CVS and now a DrugCoMart, currently owned by an investor group from Singapore that hires people to find places like Reeve on a map so they can buy more things when old men like Schottenstein die. I worked there for awhile, almost a rite of passage during high school, pulling in about four bucks an hour stocking shelves alongside my friends. Our girlfriends ran the registers, our moms and dads shopped in the store and a good story about a date could get you a night off from the sympathetic manager. When someone graduated, the manager would hire one of the workers friends and the cycle continued. I asked Angie once, What do you want to be when you grow up? and she answered Do I have to grow up? She said she didnt want to borrow someone elses dreams, she wanted her own, going everywhere shed never been until shed been everywhere.

Boundless Solitude
Selim Ileri
Boundless Solitude tells the story of Handan Sarp, a soprano at the Istanbul City Opera who has struggled throughout her life to come to terms with her lesbianism in a society that shuns the open expression of female queerness. The story unfolds through a series of vignettes that explore Handans childhood, youth, and adulthood in Istanbul in the second half of the 20th century. In her late 30s Handan was involved with a young working-class seamstress named Elem, but their relationship was strained by their class differences and they eventually parted ways. As the novel examines their relationship through Handans recollections mourning the loss of her lover, a powerful narrative of nostalgia for a lost past emerges. It highlights the nature of memory as a means of reconstructing the past for a woman whose loneliness results from her inner struggles as a lesbian in the restrictive social environment of Istanbul. Selim Ileri is the author of 22 novels and a number of collections of short stories, including Saturday Loneliness and The Final Day of Friendship, which was awarded the Sait Faik Literary Award. In 1998, the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism awarded him the title of National Artist.

Waste No Tears
Hugh Garner
Theyre cheap, gritty, good reads, and they feel like home. Katia Grubisic, author, What If Red Ran Out?, on the Ricochet series Part of the Ricochet series, which includes The Body on Mount Royal (9781550652901), The Crime on Cote des Neiges (9781550652840), Murder Over Dorval (9781550652918) and Sugar-Puss on Dorchester Street (9781550653496) A strange mixture of power, tension, and torment, Waste No Tears is a shocking expos of social evils with a forceful message for both sexes. Ignored by some critics, dismissed by others, this novel about the abortion racket is the stuff of legend: Hugh Garner claimed that it had been written in 10 days as part of a struggle to ward off incipient starvation; he was paid $400 for his efforts. Dark and disturbing, the story is a kind of memoir penned by Tom Matterson, a Cabbagetown son who spends 20 years making the 10-block journey from the street of his birth to skid row. Told from the perspective of its male narrator, the novel contains lurid descriptions of rapacious sex and harrowing depictions of death, boozing, brawling, blackmail, and back alley abortions. In Waste No Tears, the men are always tight and the women loose, and it is this downward spiral of sexual incontinence and drunken regret that propels the novel toward its morality-play conclusion. Hugh Garner was a Toronto novelist, short story writer, and journalist. He published 16 books during his lifetime, including Hugh Garners Best Stories, winner of the Governor Generals Award for English-language Fiction.

Boxing the Compass, is excellent. Greene avoids the mundane through the clarity of his observation, the ingenuity of his rhyme, and the modesty of his wisdom. University of Toronto Quarterly on Boxing the Compass Taking as its subject the rumors, misunderstandings, and half-truths that often comprise our knowledge of others, this latest collection of poems from Richard Greene captures the various states of feeling that come with a flawed life. Moving from his mothers oil paintings and the harrowing conditions at a corrections facility to recollections of a much-loved mentor, this collection of verse is capped off by the lyrical and moving title poem. Written in fluent, colloquial terza rima and set in sundrenched Siena during the frenzied pageantry of the Italian citys biannual horse race, it is a brilliant, beautifully realized achievement that consolidates Greenes reputation as a master of narrative verse. Richard Greene is a professor of creative writing and British literature at the University of Toronto. Excerpt: The foundation of open relationships is a simple idea: One person cant be a 100 percent perfect partner for any other person. Nor should we expect them to be. Hoping your boyfriend or girlfriend will fit unrealistic expectations of perfection is only going to lead to frustration, disappointment, and resentment. Under this idea, attraction to multiple people is a positive, honest, wholesome part of someones life, rather than an inherently nasty, negative urge to cheat.

Venceremos
Vctor Jara and the New Chilean Song Movement
Gabriel San Romn Foreword by T. M. Scruggs
When the socialist politician Salvador Allende dramatically won Chiles presidential election in 1970, a powerful cultural movement accompanied him to power as folk singers emerged at the forefront proving that music could help forge the birth of a new society. Venceremos charts the development of such a cultural phenomenon from the years before Allendes victorious campaign to the brutal U.S.-backed military coup on September 11, 1973, which ousted his presidency and imposed the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet. The bloody repression that followed would claim the life of Vctor Jara, a key singer-songwriter, but could never put to rest the lasting power of his songs nor the movement he personified. Gabriel San Romn is a journalist whose work has appeared in numerous outlets, including Truthout and Z Magazine. He lives in Anaheim, California. T. M. Scruggs was the sole ethnomusicologist at the University of Iowa. He lives in Berkeley, California.
