My future career that I want to pursue here at the University of Michigan Dearborn is to major in Business Administration. The reason being is because there are several different areas I can specialize in such as Marketing, Accounting, Human Resources, etc. A Bachelors degree in Business Administration is a minimum requirement for many jobs in the business field. Also, you can acquire a Masters and Doctorate degrees in Business Administration (Schweitzer). According to Aurelio Locsin of Demand Media, she states, Business administration majors make a median $49,200 per year right out of college. The job title with the highest starting wages for business administration majors was financial manager, averaging $63,900 per year (Locsin). A Masters degree in Business Administration can lead to an increase in job opportunities and an increase in earning potential over the course of ones career (Master of Business Administration Degree Guide). As you can tell the further you expand your degree in business the higher the salary will be. It is often challenging to identify career options because business is a broad field. Some of these careers include Business Consultant, Financial Analyst, Advertisement and Promotions Manager, Insurance Sales Agent, Public Relations Manager, Market Research Manager, and several others (Itkin). Your career options in business administration will depend largely on your education level as well as your other qualifications such as having prior work experience in a specific field, leadership abilities, and special skills All of these things determine whether or not you are qualified for a specific position. Along with writing, research and verbal presentations enhance peoples ability to gather, analyze, and present information (Akwetey pg. 28). Writing skills are important in many types of company communications, including emails, reports, presentations, etc. People with good writing skills are seen as more credible. If you receive an email from a colleague that was filled with typos and grammatical errors, people arent going to take the email seriously. Possessing a Doctorate degree in Business Administration is in high demand. Graduates with doctorate degrees benefit from better salary than those with lower degrees. The newspaper Seattle PI had a statistic that read, The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that top business

executives took home over $165,000 in median annual wages in 2010. Financial managers, who also possess doctorate degrees, earned median annual wages of $103,000 in 2010 (OCadiz). Having excellent business administration and management skills creates opportunity for learning how to lead an organization in todays challenging economy. Those who hold a Bachelors of Business Administration are considered to have an excellent basic education in the most effective techniques and theories for moving a business forward (U.S. News University Directory). Business Administration courses offer a wide range of topics that prepare a student for the workplace with excellent communication and thinking skills I conducted an interview with my brother Don about his background as a Business Administration major. He has a Bachelors degree from Central Michigan University. The last four years he has worked as a Human Resources Coordinator/Recruiter. He told me his average ranges from $45,000-50,000 a year. What he does is on a typical day at work is he puts reports together for his bosses on spreadsheets and PowerPoint, commuting through email with new potential clients, talking to employees about company policies, and going over resumes to see if they are qualified to be hired for his company.
