M2 pre-lecture POGIL programme participant information sheet The POGIL programme is completely voluntary and is accessible to students registered

in Foundation Year 2012/2013. At any time during semester 2, any student may choose to withdraw from the POGIL programme with the understanding that reentry into the programme at a later date will not be allowed. The focus of the chemistry activities during these sessions will be similar in style to the POGIL tutorials run during the first semester of this academic year. The POGIL programme will be delivered as a prelecture programme. Students will be encountering material for the first time during the POGIL progamme sessions. This will encourage students to construct their own understanding of the concepts presented in the chemistry activities in advance of the material being presented in lectures. As participants, you are entitled to understand what is expected from you and what you may expect from those of us who are here to guide you. Therefore, we have constructed a complete outline concerning the requirements for students participation and the responsibilities of facilitators.

Please read the below information carefully before signing the signature sheet that accompanies this outline.

M2 POGIL Programme activities --Student Participation 1. Students can enroll in the programme before February 13th 2013. After this date students will not be permitted to enroll in the programme. 2. The POGIL programme activities are not designed to replace any activity within the existing foundation year curriculum. 3. A maximum number of 40 students may enroll in the POGIL programme. In the event that more than 50 students apply to enroll in the POGIL programme, random selection will be used to select students for enrollment in the programme. 4. There will be a total of eight POGIL activities lasting up to 90 minutes each. 5. Attendance is mandatory for each POGIL activity for POGIL programme participants. 6. In order to ensure success for the enrolled students, more than two absences will cause automatic withdrawal from the activities without further consideration for reentry in the programme. 7. Students enrolled in programme will be divided into groups of three or four individuals. 8. Initial determination of group members will be based on student performance in Module 2 and overall performance in Modules 1 5 in semester 1. 9. Active participation in groups during the activity sessions is vital for the success of the individual member and group members in solving the assigned materials.

10. Groups are required to submit the activity worksheets (including the reflection and peer evaluation sections) at the end of each activity session. The activity sheets will be graded and feedback will be provided to each group. 11. Once during the semester, students will be reorganized into groups with different members. 12. Groups will compete for a prize that will be awarded to the group with the highest score for the POGIL programme activity sheets. Group scores will be determined by the marks received in activity worksheets including reflection and peer evaluation sections. 13. The participation of students in this program will provide valuable information for the future development of foundation year courses. 14. Data will be collected throughout the semester from the programme activity sheets, reflections and peer evaluations. All of the information collected will be confidential and will not be correlated to a students name. The information collected will have no effect upon the grade which a student will receive for the M2 module. 15. The data collected will be statistically analysed and these results will be published. The above rules are devised to offer the best conditions in which students may participate in structured and meaningful group work activities using the POGIL pedagogical approach. Dr Declan Gaynor and the foundation year teaching staff assure you that participation in this programme will assist your own academic development, improve knowledge in the area of cooperative learning in chemistry and support the continuous quality improvement activities concerned with teaching and curriculum development.

M2 pre-lecture POGIL programme participant consent form I have read the above guidelines for my participation in the pre-lecture M2 POGIL programme. In so doing, I am aware that my participation is completely voluntary and that I may at any time during the semester choose to withdraw from the programme without further consideration for reentry to the programme. It is also my understanding that if I am absent for two POGIL activities that I will be automatically eliminated from participation in the programme. In exchange for my participation I will be considered for the highest scoring group prize that will be awarded at the end of the POGIL programme. I am aware that information will be collected from my performance in the POGIL programme activities including the refection and peer evaluation sections. It is my understanding that information collected will be used for research and will not affect my grade in M2. I am aware that my identity or identifying information will not be published as part of this research project. I am aware that I will have access to the outcomes of this research through the university virtual learning environment.
