Thoughts for a rainy day
When it rains, it pours. Sometimes that old saying seems almost factual. If you recently suffered a loss, were disappointed or failed at a personal or professional endeavor, you might have found yourself wondering, why is it that the bad things in life happen all at once? The more superstitious of us share a belief that deaths, natural disasters heck, even unflattering haircuts come in threes. Statisticians and others say these are random occurrences, there is no set schedule to bad luck. Our minds are simply trying to make sense of negative events and causing us to see patterns where none exist. Whatever the case may be, theres no changing the fact that bad things do happen, and when weve already been dealt one blow, additional stressors and disappointments can weigh us down even more. But though we might not be able to predict when these things will occur, we do have control. We can prepare and persevere.
PRACTICE POSITIVITY. Negativity breeds negativity. In contrast, when you

have a positive outlook on life, youre better able to recognize all the miracles that surround you every day. Dont lose your sense of wonder at the world, share it with others.

BUILD RESILIENCE. The rainy periods in life are necessary; we wouldnt

appreciate the sunny days without them. This month, our authors give you tools to persevere during the tough times and truly enjoy the good times. Learn how to acknowledge and name your fears in Kick your fear into the stratosphere, by Teresa Martens. Stress can be overwhelming, but in James E. Todd Jr.s Stress and how hypnosis can help, the difference between good and bad stress is outlined and relief options are provided. Do you know your souls purpose? In To thine own self be kind, by Rebecca Grazulis, she re-evaluates the typical definition and reveals the importance of accepting love.

KNOW THAT THIS TOO SHALL PASS. While it might not seem like it at first,

Tips for a great mens haircut

By Alyssa Williamson
ure, for the most part, the beauty industry is geared toward women. There are countless beauty magazines for women and millions of dollars spent on advertising for womens beauty products. But that doesnt mean that men dont want to look good, too. Every guy wants a haircut that fits his lifestyle and represents him. The right haircut can enhance your life in ways both big and small. It can simplify your mornings, allowing you to look polished with little effort. It can help shape the way the rest of the world perceives you, projecting the image that truly represents you. A good mens haircut is so much more than taking a clippers to the head and buzzing away. It is a very detail-oriented job that should take into account hair texture and style, face shape and more. A great cut involves a lot of blending and texturizing to tailor the cut to each individual. Since no two heads of hair are exactly alike, no two haircuts should be exactly alike. A good haircut will look good on the first day, but the true test of a great haircut is the way it grows out. A great cut will keep its shape and let you go a little longer between cuts. So, how do you get the perfect haircut? Here are six tips to get the perfect cut: 1. FIND A BARBER YOU TRUST. This is sometimes easier said than done, but if you need a new barber, just ask around. Find out where your friends go and whether or not they like their barber. If you know they always have a great haircut, their recommendation might be worth a try. 2. BRING IN PICTURES AND AN OPEN MIND. Pictures are a great way to show your barber what it is youre looking for when you cant quite find the words to describe it. Your barber can then assess your hair (length, texture, thickness, etc.) and ask about your lifestyle and grooming habits.
3. BE HONEST WHEN YOUR BARBER ASKS YOU ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE AND GROOMING HABITS. How often
8
Natures Pathways | April 2014

do you shampoo? Do you use styling products? If so, how much time do you allow to style your hair? Are you willing to invest more time into styling your hair? If youre not honest with your answers, you may get the haircut you want but not be able to maintain it at home.
4. TAKE YOUR BARBERS RECOMMENDATIONS TO HEART. Sometimes the haircut you want may not suit your

hair texture or face shape. An experienced barber will recognize these issues and be able to make recommendations to modify the cut to your particular needs.

5. INVEST A FEW MINUTES IN LEARNING HOW TO STYLE YOUR NEW HAIRCUT. You didnt spend time and money on

a quality cut to have the look for one day only. A good barber will give you a mini styling lesson, telling you what they used and how they used it so you can recreate your look at home. Pay attention when they do so. Its worth the extra few minutes to keep up your new look at home. 6. PUT YOURSELF ON A SCHEDULE. A good haircut will grow out well, but no haircut looks good forever. Pay attention to how your hair grows. If you know your cut starts losing its polish after four to five weeks, start scheduling regular appointments for that interval. That way you can guarantee that youll get the appointment time that fits your schedule, and youll always stay looking your best.

The power of words and beliefs

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
e talk to ourselves and others all the time, but what do we say? Is it positive, negative, limiting, critical, judging, nonjudging, accepting or supportive? Perhaps you arent even aware of how this impacts yourself and others. Would you treat your own best friend the way you treat yourself? Would you talk to someone else the way you talk to yourself? We are bombarded with beliefs at a very young age often through our childhood, ancestors, past generations, society and peers. We are constantly being told what we are to think and believe. So many of us are already patterned with certain beliefs and therefore, conditioned and indoctrinated that we have lost the ability to decide for ourselves. As a result, we have allowed others to choose for us. So what do you want to believe? Yes, you actually get to choose what you want to believe. What you believe attracts an experience that strengthens the belief. Could it be that whatever we believe has a direct consequence on the reality that we create for ourselves? Could the individual mind that is connected to the collective consciousness elevate the consciousness of the planet? Dr. Masaru Emoto performed a series of experiments observing the physical effects of words, prayers, music and environment on the crystalline structure of water. Through his research, he discovered that the water stamped with positive words such as thank you, love and appreciation was found to be more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing than those stamped with dark phrases such as you make me sick, war and hate. So if the words and thoughts that come out of us have this effect on water crystals, just think of what kind of effect this has on people and the events that come into our lives. Also keep in mind that the average human body is made up of 60 percent water.

I am not good enough Life isnt fair Theres not enough time Its my fault I am a failure Life is difficult

Go slowly over the above beliefs again and allow yourself to feel them and discover the feeling they create for you. You ultimately are the one who attaches the meaning to the belief. So could you have another belief? You can ask yourself if the belief is limiting you or helping you in some way. We can also operate from transparent beliefs that we believe are absolutely true. Such as that is just the way life is or thats just how I am. Through Byron Katies The Work, there is a process of challenging beliefs that can help in transforming limiting beliefs. For each belief that you hold, you can ask yourself the following: 1. Is it true? If you answer yes, move on to the next question. 2. Can you absolutely know its true? 3. How do you react; what happens when you believe that thought?

Dont let commercials trump your common sense!

By Kimberly Maahs

ouve all seen them: the pet food commercials with the fresh meats and vegetables flowing across the TV screen; the ecstatic dog running across the open field, followed by that soothing voice touting that this, this is the answer youve been waiting for. The fruits and vegetables are organic, the meat is farm

raised and if your pet could eat this one food and only this food, they would live out their days in perfect health. I think marketing is amazing! It has the ability to tap into our desires or hone in on our weaknesses with the promise of quick and easy solutions. In the case of pet food commercials, our Achilles heel is our pets.

That goes without saying, right? These furry, four-legged creatures have become part of our family and we only want to do whats best for them. So, the commercials show us scenarios of our pets undying devotion, while simultaneously making the point that the only way we could possibly reward that devotion would be to provide them with

Fresh, unprocessed foods offer the best nutrition.

the best pet food possible their pet food! And despite all common sense, we buy into it, or should I say, we buy it: literally. Now I couldnt agree more that a dog is, if nothing else, devoted. And I believe that giving them a loving home, complete with the best food possible, is a great way to return that devotion. But, is the food that you saw in that commercial really the best you can offer? What the commercial is advertising is a feeling. The feeling ranges from Im doing the best thing ever for my pet, to my pet will live a long and happy life if I feed it this food. What theyre really selling you is a bag of tiny biscuits known as kibble. Kibble is a totally processed pet food comprised of many unnecessary ingredients like grains, starches, synthetic chemicals, food colorings and preservatives. The complete and balanced stamp of approval that you see on most bags is a standard of minimum nutritional value set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). This standard does not take into consideration whether or not your pet can actually digest and utilize these ingredients. Because kibble is made using high pressure and high temperatures, any nutritional value in the original ingredients is lost. It is however fortified with synthetic vitamins and minerals to replace what was lost during the processing. These synthetic vitamins and minerals are unrecognizable or, at the very least, difficult for your pets body to utilize. Over time, they can do more harm than good. Theres one last thing that needs to be done before the kibble can be bagged. The manufacturer needs to spray a flavoring agent on the food so your pet will eat it. The coating usually contains some sort of fat. Did you know that once you open a bag of kibble, exposing it to light and oxygen, those fats can quickly turn rancid? Within a week or two, without you even realizing it, you might be feeding your pet something that could potentially make them sick. Now that you know a little something about it, kibble doesnt exactly match up

with the feeling you had while you were watching that commercial, does it? You know what will give you that feeling? Feeding your pet fresh, unprocessed whole foods as often as you can. Fresh, unprocessed foods offer the best nutrition. Theyre full of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, along with other nourishing components. All of these elements are present in the food not as individually occurring items, but as whole food complexes that synergistically work together to nourish and strengthen your pets body. And the flavor is natural, unlike the flavored coatings put on kibble. Whether youre able to do a little fresh food a couple times a week or all fresh food for the lifetime of your pet, you will see the difference. You will get that feeling. And youll know that you are doing the best you can for your pet. He will live a longer and happier life because of it.

Are you exercising more and still not losing weight?

By Rosalie Misco

ou are not alone. Many people attempt to lose weight by exercising more. It doesnt always work. However, you can make it work for you. You must learn how to alter your diet so your exercise efforts pay off. It isnt just how many calories you eat but the kinds of food the calories come from that make a difference in weight loss. Macronutrients are protein, fat and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are made up of fiber, an indigestible carbohydrate, and digestible carbohydrates. Your body prefers carbohydrates which have been turned into glucose for energy. Digestible carbohydrates like sugar and white flour turn into glucose in 15-30 minutes. Fat and protein can also be turned into glucose to be used as energy, but it takes much longer. Fiber, also a carbohydrate, does not turn into glucose because it is indigestible. Fiber leaves the body without giving up its calories. When you exercise, your body will use the glucose from sugar and starch, digesting carbohydrates first. Then it will start to burn fat. If you oversupply your body with fast-digesting sugar and

starch, your body will not need to burn fat for energy and then you dont lose weight. By denying your body so much sugar and starch, you can make your body burn fat for energy and your exercise will result in weight loss. Reducing the sugar and starch in your diet will help, but adding indigestible fiber to the carbohydrates you do eat helps too. Fiber like oat bran, wheat bran and high-fiber ground flaxseed added to carbohydrates reduces the digestible content of the food. Resistant starch fiber is a soluble fiber that is very helpful in reducing the effects of starch on the body. Your body makes an enzyme to digest starch. When resistant starch fiber is present, it attaches to that enzyme and doesnt allow the starch to digest, thus cancelling the calories in the starch. Resistant starch fiber occurs naturally in foods like dried beans and barley. It is available in the form of a non-GMO Hi-maize cornstarch that is easily added to foods along with other fibers. Hi-maize 260 is available in 1-pound bags along with information about how to easily use it in foods you normally eat (like yogurt). Hi-maize 260 makes you feel very full so you eat less, helps lower blood glucose and reduces cholesterol and triglycerides. Hi-maize 260 makes less starch in the form of glucose available to your body for energy when you exercise. Your body is forced to burn more body fat when you exercise and you will lose weight.

Love is the remedy

By Ron Urban

s your stomach in knots? Are the worries of life keeping you up at night? If so, your body is reacting and holding on to stress. In fact, your whole system is trying to recalibrate mind, body and spirit. Did you know that your negative thoughts lead to fears that follow in your emotions? We as human machines learn to adjust to stress. However, it comes at a cost: our health! Stress can be a killer, as we all know. It is unrealistic to think that we can live life on Sesame Street all of the time with only joy, happiness and laughter. However, when our bodies are in the state of recalibrating in our circumstances, we also need to chase away Freddy Krueger. Fear is a natural instinct, but we put our bodies through tremendous stress while on Elm Street. You may be asking why love is a remedy. Lets do an exercise together. Imagine a moment of high stress or a long season of turmoil. Now, answer these questions below without careful thought. Mentally spurt out the answers: 1. What is your first instinct or pressing need when you feel overwhelmed? 2. Who is the first person you call when stressed? 3. How does your body react to stress? For most of us, we wish to plow through our circumstances and create change. This is logical and rational. However, oftentimes stressful situations involve more than a quick fix. So, we settle for second best: support. The questions above speak volumes in terms of the healthy or not-so-healthy resources available to you.

Maybe some of you battle with such anxiety that support is cut off. In the exercise, you were asked what your first reaction to stress is. For those of you with social supports, that is great. As you mentally answered the questions, some of you may have experienced a sigh, a deeper exhale or your shoulders shrugging forward as you identified a support system. You see, your body is recalibrating once again. Its releasing tension. Why? Love and care can soothe.

What the answers reveal

In stress, your mind, body and spirit are craving something to put in your system to feel better, a reaction of some sort. For many of us, its support. We are naturally drawn to where there is perceived love and concern. Have you ever noticed that you feel you can breathe deeper or even exhale and just be when you are in the presence of someone you perceive cares or loves you? Your body reacts and lets go.

Which vaccines are right for your pet?

By Lori Scarlett, DVM
arch 23 was National Puppy Day. Many people adopt new puppies in the spring because potty training is so much easier without snow on the ground! When you get your new puppy, visit your veterinarian within a few days. Your vet will perform a physical exam and check for external parasites like fleas, ear mites and lice, and internal parasites like roundworms, so be sure to take in a fresh fecal sample! Veterinarians are also a good resource for all your questions about potty training, feeding, behavior issues, etc.

Puppies require regular vaccinations until they are more than 16 weeks of age. When a puppy is born and nurses, it obtains protective antibodies from its mom (providing she was vaccinated). Those antibodies can last in the puppy for weeks, but the length varies, so puppies are vaccinated every three to four weeks in order to catch the time when moms antibodies are wearing off and the puppy can mount his own response to the vaccine. All antibodies from mom are gone by 12-16 weeks of age, so it is important to continue the vaccinations until 16-20 weeks of age. There are a number of vaccines available, but not all are required for every puppy. The American Animal Hospital Association provides recommendations for core vaccinations for dogs. Distemper, parvo, infectious hepatitis and rabies are all considered core vaccines. Distemper is a contagious disease caused by a virus similar to the measles virus. It initially causes upper respiratory disease gooey eyes and nose, fever, poor appetite and coughing, which can lead to pneumonia. It progresses to vomiting and diarrhea and then the nose and pads of the paws get callused and hard. Finally, it can cause seizures and potentially death. This used to be a very common disease until dogs were routinely vaccinated. Parvo is a contagious disease caused by a very hardy virus found everywhere. It causes severe diarrhea and vomiting, which leads to dehydration and possibly death. Puppies with parvo can survive, but they require hospitalization and intensive fluid therapy, antibiotics and other supportive treatment. It is much easier to prevent parvo than to pay for the treatment. Infectious canine hepatitis (also called canine adenovirus or CAV-1) is another contagious viral disease. It can cause liver disease, cloudiness of the cornea, vomiting, diarrhea and respiratory problems. Even if a pup recovers from the disease, there can be long-lasting problems. Distemper, parvo and hepatitis vaccines are combined into one vaccination, so your pup will only need one shot at each visit to protect against these viruses.

Natures Pathways | April 2014

Rabies is a viral disease spread through saliva or bites from an infected animal. Because rabies is almost always fatal and can be spread to humans, all animals are required by law to be vaccinated against it. This vaccine is given once in puppyhood, repeated at one year of age and then every three years in dogs. There are other vaccines to discuss with your veterinarian. Leptospirosis is a bacteria spread through wild animals (rats, mice, raccoons, etc.) urine. It is a zoonotic disease, so it can be spread to humans. Many vets will routinely vaccinate for lepto because of the human health risk. Bordetella is a bacteria involved in kennel cough. This is a contagious disease, much like the common cold, and is frequently seen in boarding dogs or those that interact with other dogs (such as at dog parks or day care). Canine influenza is similar to kennel cough and is spread between dogs housed together. The Lyme disease vaccine may be recommended to dogs who have possible exposure to ticks they go out in areas with long grass, trees or where deer pass through. Celebrate National Puppy Day by setting up an appointment with your veterinarian to check out your new puppy and to examine and vaccinate all your pets. They will thank you for the care you give them!

To thine own self be kind

By Rebecca Grazulis, M.A, M.Ed.

hen Im in a session with clients and when I do any kind of writing, I often find myself talking about purpose life purpose to be exact. Talking about it and helping women connect with theirs are two of my favorite things. However, recently, Ive begun to re-evaluate my stance on life purpose. Historically, Ive been rather relentless in my insistence that people discover theirs and go about fulfilling it immediately, as I do believe that we all have an important part to play and I also believe that a persons life gets infinitely better once he or she is living in line with his or her purpose. Many people come to me quite baffled by what exactly their purpose is, which is a problem I intimately understand as I spent years running in circles around mine. Sometimes we are very afraid of what were here to do, and thus, sometimes we spend years keeping ourselves in the dark. Our souls may urge us in one direction or the other (as your soul always knows what your agenda is), but we do have free will to resist those urges. I still do believe that pursuing and finding your purpose is important, but now I take a more relaxed stance. I see that so many

helping women live magically

of us punish ourselves long and hard for not being able to get it together and do the things we were meant to do. No lasting change comes from self-punishment. If youre afraid, thats okay. We can work through that. If youre terrified, well, I am very sorry that you are suffering, but that is also okay. Whatever you are feeling is fine and temporary. The world can be a frightening place, and Im sure that you have very good reasons for feeling as you do. Know that insofar as the only truth (and reality) is love, you can never really make a mistake. Your soul may be promoting a very specific agenda, but God only has one: love. However you choose to love is fine, as long as you are also accepting it. As humans, and especially as healers, we need to make accepting love our number one priority. If you are not accepting love for yourself, you do not believe yourself worthy. If you do not believe yourself worthy, then you are out of sync with Gods love and simply wont be able to give it to others. Each of our souls has ideas for us, and insofar as we cant talk directly to our souls, our lives and our suffering can often seem mysterious. In the end, however, know that God has absolutely no interest in us suffering. That is strictly a soul agenda. We all put ourselves through the paces here on Earth, feeling as though if we dont get it right, weve failed or are unworthy. Its a false notion. Youre always worthy. Youre always loved. If you happen to fulfill your souls purpose, well, thats just the icing on the cake.

The many health benets of laser therapy

How it can help you lose weight, heal wounds and more
By Sue Dyal, CLT

ave you heard of auriculotherapy? Laser auriculotherapy is a technique similar to acupuncture, but done with a laser instead of needles. Its often effective when other treatments have failed. Best of all, it is safe, noninvasive and has no known side effects. Auriculotherapy is used widely for pain control, addictions of all kinds, internal disorders, emotional issues and a host of other problems.

Weight loss

Auriculotherapy is considered an alternative weight-loss method because it is based on the same principals as acupuncture. Certain points inside the ear, when stimulated with the laser, will trigger shifts in the patients inner energy. This invigorates the patients metabolism, providing the individual more energy, and activates enzymes to change the patients physiological desires, reducing appetite and cravings. Laser therapy gives the patient a wonderful sense of well-being and happiness. Though laser therapy really helps weight-loss efforts, diet and exercise are still crucial to achieve healthy results. The intent with this treatment is to help to facilitate the weightloss process and to help with willpower. Multiple treatments are required in order for the treatment to be effective. At least five to 10 treatments once every seven to 10 days are recommended. The appetite reduction from each session should carry the patient through to the next session. The idea is to build the metabolism, boosting it with each treatment.

Oh my aching back!
By Sonya Sullins, MBA, CRHP

re you suffering from back pain? Is it stopping you from being productive at work and being more physically active? Is it forcing you to miss work? You are not alone. According to studies, about 65 million Americans are suffering from back pain, making it the second most common reason for trips to the doctor. Some of the many nonsurgical treatments available to relieve back pain include prescription medication (opioids) and nonprescription medication (NSAIDS). But any pain medication, either prescribed or over the counter, often comes with unwanted side effects. Below are five natural alternatives that are gentle, safe and effective:

these points helps to correct the imbalance of qi and improves the flow of energy. This helps to relieve pain and improve health.
4. NEGATIVE ION THERAPY

Do you get really invigorated from the beach or a waterfall? Theres a reason for this: negative ions. Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that are abundant around mountains, waterfalls and beaches. Once they reach our bloodstream, negative ions produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress and pain, and boost energy.
5. MASSAGE THERAPY

1. CHIROPRACTIC

Chiropractic is excellent for relieving pain and getting you back into proper alignment. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support.
2. FAR INFRARED HEAT THERAPY

We all know a massage feels amazing. Its relaxing. You feel pampered. Did you know its also therapeutic? In fact, most health care providers are recognizing massage therapy as a legitimate aid for lower back pain and an effective adjunct to lower back treatments. Fifty-four percent of health care providers say they will encourage their patients to pursue massage therapy in addition to medical treatment. Dont let pain slow you down! Get back to your life and start healing naturally without negative side effects. Get back to the lifestyle you know and love! Try the Amethyst BioMat to combine far infrared therapy with negative ions and try far infrared power strips for pain. Both are FDA approved, safe and effective ways to get rid of your pain.
Sonya Sullins, MBA, CRHP, is the owner of Luminous Lotus Healing. She specializes in natural and alternative methods to healing in mind, body and spirit. Her healing therapies include FIR Therapy with Amethyst BioMat, Reconnective Healing and The Reconnection, Intuitive Readings, Crystal Healing, and Divine Guidance Business Coaching. For decades, chiropractors, massage therapists and acupuncturists (as well as traditional medical practitioners) have valued heat therapy for relieving pain. Even more effective is far infrared therapy, also known as FIR therapy. FIR penetrates deeply into the body, dilates the blood vessels and stimulates the flow of oxygenrich blood that relieves muscle pain. FIR therapy also loosens and soothes your tight back muscles, giving you comfort and relief. And, because of improved blood flow, vital nutrients that are needed for cellular healing are efficiently delivered to the injured area, helping speed up the recovery process.
3. ACUPUNCTURE

Dont be afraid of the needles! I hate injections as much as the next person, but acupuncture is completely different. You will feel restored and renewed. You probably wont even feel the needle. Acupuncture began in China more than 2,500 years ago. It involves inserting thin needles at certain points on the body. The body has more than 2,000 of these points and they are connected by pathways or meridians, which create a flow of energy called qi. Stimulating

therapy speeds up the healing process by delivering light energy (photons) to the cells. This process is known as photobiostimulation. Wounds of all types can be improved and healed at a cellular level.

Additional benets

Many conditions are known to benefit from laser therapy, including: Chronic, acute and surgical wounds Joint conditions, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis Back and neck pain Headaches Injuries of the knee meniscus Shoulder and hip bursitis, as well as rotator cuff tears and other shoulder injuries Soft tissue injuries Bulged and herniated discs, as well as degenerative disc disease Tendonitis in the biceps, Achilles tendon and elbow Golfers elbow and tennis elbow (medial and lateral epicondylitis) Muscle sprains, including groin pulls and hamstring tears Ligament injuries and strains, including medial collateral and lateral collateral ligament injuries, as well as anterior and posterior cruciate ligament injuries Plantar fasciitis Ankle sprains Myofascial trigger points Venous ulcers Burns Amputee stumps Diabetic ulcers of the foot Most patients experience relief immediately after their first laser treatment, though everyones body is different and it can be a couple of days before you notice an improvement in your pain. The benefits of laser therapy are clear, though: It is painless and has been used for 20 years without any known side effects. This is why laser therapy is ideal for treatment.
For Sue Dyal, affectionately known as the Laser Lady, it was a desire to help people with their pain and addictions that led her to her role as certified laser therapist at Laser Therapy Center in Wisconsin Dells. Seven years ago, Sue was finally able to quit a lifelong addiction to nicotine with laser therapy. She had tried everything to quit her addiction: patches, gum, medication and more none of them worked for her at all. When Sue gave laser therapy a try, her desire for and thoughts of nicotine disappeared after just three treatments. After that, Sue trained and went to work for the company that treated her. Sue is trained to treat addictions including smoking, chewing, drugs, alcohol and food. See what a difference laser therapy can make in your life! Letting go of resentments
By Barry Kerr and Kristine Gay

ver find yourself fighting with someone in your head? Do you have the same old dialogue with this person again and again? Weve all done that. Its a habit troubling to many individuals lives and senses of happiness. Such inner arguments are typically with someone we feel has offended us in some way. It may be one event or a pattern of behaviors, but we generally feel theyve caused us some grief and we resent them for it. Each time we tell the story, we relive the emotional pain. The key to ending this habit is to examine, sincerely and honestly, our own beliefs and interpretations of the story we created. Heres a list of questions to ask yourself in such circumstances. To try these questions, pick a story youve been telling yourself and others about a person in your life. Its best to ask someone you trust to ask you these questions after youve told them the story. Ask that person to not sympathize with you, but challenge you. Be curious. Dig deep. Keep it honest.

Checking the facts

What are the actual facts? In other words, if the other person

was here telling the story, what are the facts we both would likely have no disagreement on? What can I question as my assumptions, even though they feel real and reasonable to me? Am I filling in unknown details to make my story more complete or to justify it?

Interpreting the story

How do I believe the other person is wrong? What motivations do I believe the other person had/has? Which assumptions (not facts) have I used to support my beliefs? Do I have conversations with this person in my head? What do I think they dont know about me or the situation that How have I wanted the other person to change? What do I tell myself the other person was or is thinking about What has the other person actually directly communicated to

me about me (in words or writing)? This is not my interpretation, but what they actually said. Even though it may be exaggerated or off the mark, is there anything in it that may be valid feedback for me to consider? Have I gotten similar feedback anywhere else? What do I tell myself the other person was or is thinking about the situation as a whole (e.g., how it happened, why, the meaning, timing, etc.)? Even though it may not be entirely accurate or reasonable, is there anything in their perspective that might hold some truth? How have I let the opinions, actions or judgments of this person affect me in a negative way?

How is this story similar to other stories in my life? What is an How does the other person in my story reflect aspects of my

self? What are the behavior, belief, attitude, value and/or priority that this story has brought to my attention for me to change, adopt, release and/or expand? If I did so, would this story matter anymore?

An honest inventory of answers to these questions will begin to change how you experience your story. If you can take responsibility for how you are telling yourself the story, you can turn it into an opportunity for empowerment, freedom, acceptance and forgiveness. You can release the other person from the story and it will no longer be about them. It will be about what you learned and how you can make different choices in the future. No more imaginary arguments. If you experience resistance to letting go of your story or even asking the questions, consider seeking a skilled life and relationship coach or therapist for some assistance. Asking for such help is a sign of maturity and strength.

Natural fertilizers loaded with nutrients and minerals

awn and garden enthusiasts know a handful of items are essential to maintain a healthy landscape. Water, sunshine and the proper nutrients all work together to promote a healthy lawn. Although nutritional material is inherent in the soil, many gardeners feel soil must be amended with some sort of fertilizer to give plants a healthy boost. All natural fertilizers are growing in popularity, and home gardeners have a variety of such products at their disposal. Ambitious homeowners can even create their own all natural fertilizers from items around the house. Organic fertilizers, or those that are derived from living organisms and not manufactured through chemicals, can provide sufficient nutrients and minerals to grow healthy plants.

Manure

The waste from herbivores (animals that feed on grass), including rabbits, horses and cows, can make super fertilizers. Some gardeners shy away from manure because they believe it to be an odoriferous, dirty product. The best produced manures are allowed to compost for at least nine months and are mixed with hay or straw. They should not produce an offensive odor and will provide plants with a host of nutrients. Never use manures from meat-eating animals like dogs, cats or humans. Feces can harbor a lot of bacteria, which can be transferred to the garden soil.

helping to aerate the soil. But the castings, or waste, of the worms also provide valuable nutrients to the soil. The castings contain beneficial microorganisms from the worms digestive system that help break down organic matter into a form that plant roots can use. Many gardeners participate in vermicomposting, farming worms in order to use their castings as fertilizer.

Compost

Fish and seaweed

Bone meal

In order to store energy and reach maturity, plants need phosphate. This mineral is released over a long period of time from finely ground rock. A faster way to supply it to the landscape is through bone meal. Bone meal is a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones that are a waste product from meat processing plants. Adding bone meal to soil is one of the most effective ways to increase phosphorous levels.
22
Natures Pathways | April 2014

Improving soil nutrients may be as simple as looking to the ocean or other bodies of water. Fish emulsion, a mixture of ground fish and water, is a good nitrogen source. Nitrogen gives plants the energy to grow. Seaweed, which is actually a type of algae, contains the primary nutrients that plants need in order to thrive, including phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium. It also serves as a food for natural bacteria that break down nutrients into the soil, making them easier for plants to absorb.

Worms

Earthworms are vital to soil health. They burrow and wiggle around in the dirt,

Compost can also be used as fertilizer. Gardeners can make their own compost from discarded materials. Compost is one of the most widely used soil amendments in vegetable gardens. Yard refuse, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds and other items can be added to a compost pile. Natural bacteria will slowly break down these materials into a product dubbed black gold. Compost can be mixed into soil before planting and used as a dressing after plants have been established. Gardeners can experiment with different ratios of fertilizer to create a mix that enhances the soil. Test the soil to determine which, if any, nutrients the soil is lacking so the fertilizer can be adjusted accordingly.

Get up and move!

By Jade Bunk, SFG

ovement is medicine for creating change in your physical, emotional and mental states. Sitting still for long periods of time sends pain signals through the body. These signals are attempting to send you a message to get up and move! When it comes to the body, the saying Use it or lose it! couldnt be more true. The prevalence of pain and dysfunction in most peoples lives can be traced back to a lack of movement. The food you put in your mouth, the thoughts you think, stress and sleep all affect quality of life, but plain old simple movement should not be overlooked either, especially when it comes to chronic back, knee, hip and neck pain and even lifting your mood! The human body is meant to move. We have a saying at my house: Sitting is the root of all evil. Although this may be the extreme, its also true when it comes to our modern pain and dysfunction epidemic. In our modern world, we are brought up to sit. We are told to be still and quiet as kids when a childs natural instincts and energy will have them bouncing off the walls, as they should be! We are strapped into strollers and car seats as kids, and told to sit still at school in desks eight hours per day! Then we grow up and graduate to sitting in chairs during college and sitting in more chairs behind computers well into our 60s and 70s. This isnt

Are you at risk for oral cancer?

By James W. Hill, DDS, MS

pril is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Mouth cancer (oral or throat cancer) will be newly diagnosed in about 100 new individuals each day in the U.S. alone (nearly 42,000 Americans), and a person dies from oral cancer every hour of every day. Worldwide, the problem is far greater, with new cases annually exceeding 640,000. When found at early stages of development, oral cancers have an 80 to 90 percent survival rate. Unfortunately at this time, the majority are found as late-stage cancers,

and this accounts for the very high death rate of about 43 percent at five years from diagnosis (for all stages combined at time of diagnosis), and high treatment-related morbidity in survivors. The Oral Cancer Foundation, or OCF, is a national public service, nonprofit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy and patient support activities. The OCF reminds everyone that regular oral cancer examinations from your dental professional are the best methods to detect

oral cancer in its early stages. Regular dental visits can improve the chances that any suspicious changes in your oral health will be caught early, at a time when cancer can be treated more easily. When cancer is detected and treated early, treatment related health problems are reduced. Between dental visits, it is important for patients to be aware of the following signs and symptoms, and to see their dentist if these do not disappear after two weeks: A sore or irritation that doesnt go away Red or white patches Pain, tenderness or numbness in the mouth or lips A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust or small eroded area Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking or moving the jaw or tongue A change in the way the teeth fit together when closing the mouth There are two distinct pathways by which most people come to develop oral cancer: tobacco and alcohol (a long-term historic problem and cause), and through exposure to the human papilloma virus version 16, or HPV-16. The following stages are used to describe cancer of the lip and oral cavity:
STAGE I: The cancer is less than 2 centimeters in size (about 1 inch), and has not spread to lymph nodes in the area. (Lymph nodes are small almond-shaped structures found throughout the body that produce and store infection-fighting cells.)

STAGE II: The cancer is more than 2 centimeters but less than 4 centimeters (less than 2 inches) in size and has not spread to lymph nodes in the area. STAGE III: Either of the following may be true: The cancer is more than 4 centimeters in size; or the cancer is any size but has spread to only one lymph node on the same side of the neck as the cancer, and the lymph node that contains cancer measures no more than 3 centimeters (just more than 1 inch). STAGE IV: Any of the following may be true: The cancer has spread to tissues around the lip and oral cavity and the lymph nodes in the area may or may not contain cancer; the cancer is any size and has spread to more than one lymph node on the same side of the neck as the cancer, to lymph nodes on one or both sides of the neck, or to any lymph node that measures more than 6 centimeters (more than 2 inches); the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

How is oral cancer detected?

VELscope is a revolutionary hand-held device that provides dentists and hygienists with an easy-to-use system for the early detection of abnormal tissue. The screening involves use of a special light to illuminate abnormal cells so that they appear distinctly different from the surrounding normal tissue. The clinician is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. In fact, VELscope is the only noninvasive adjunctive device clinically proven to help discover occult oral disease. have noticed a steep rise in the prevalence of injury among young athletes over the last 20 years. Young athletes are not as physically strong as they used to be, and they are paying for it in torn ligaments, injured joints and unnecessary broken bones. One of the reasons for this could be less physical activity growing up. What does this all mean? We need to move more! Incorporating more movement into your daily life on a regular basis can and will go far in helping you feel better, decrease pain and prevent future pain and limitations on your mobility as you age. When I talk about movement, I am talking about things as simple as taking a walk, moving your body parts around in circles, shaking and wiggling, dancing, anything. Be silly, and have fun with it! If you work at a computer or are largely sedentary all day at work, make it a priority to take breaks, get up and stretch out. Light stretching, lightly jumping up and down for a minute or shaking out will give your nervous system the reset it needs to keep your complex living machine working well. Have you ever gotten up after sitting for a while, maybe after watching TV or after a long car ride, and felt stiff and

achy? That is your body speaking to you, telling you to move. When you dont listen, it gets worse. Sitting, stillness and lack of movement are the problems. Movement is the solution. Here is a challenge for this month: if you work at a desk or computer or sit for extended periods of time during the day, set a timer to go off every hour that you are sitting or working. When the timer goes off, get up for about two minutes and move in any way that feels good to you. Pop off a couple squats, shake out or do some light stretching or dynamic arm, leg or hip circles. Be consistent with this practice and in a few weeks, youll see how taking movement breaks throughout the day starts to reduce and alleviate any pain symptoms you might have. Or if you are blessedly pain free, notice your increased energy and lifted mood. As simple as it sounds, this practice is no joke. Work up to movement snacks every 20-30 minutes that you are sedentary, and watch your life change.

case with their medical problems as well. For those with shoulder problems, this article will be a disappointment. When a layperson thinks about the shoulder, their most common thought is about the ball and socket joint, known as the glenohumeral joint, which is more of a ball that rolls and glides on a small saucer, continuously being re-centered and kept in place by the muscles of the rotator cuff. This joint is unique in that it is not supposed to be stabilized by ligaments. The ligaments of the joint capsule only come into play if the muscles are failing or if trauma is unanticipated and the muscles are not able to react in time. The capsule must be loose in order to allow the range of motion the shoulder displays. Ibrahim Adalbert Kapanji, the author of the most commonly cited books on biomechanics of the joints, recognizes the shoulder girdle complex as including the glenohumeral joint, the A-C/acromioclavicular joint and the sterno-costo-clavicular joint, all of which are true anatomic joints, as well as the subdeltoid joint and the scapulothoracic joint, which are classified as physiological joints. True joints have joint capsules attaching bone to bone and the joints typically have fluid in them. The physiological joints are surfaces that interface and glide past one another but are not necessarily made of bone and ligaments. The subdeltoid joint is a space under the deltoid muscle that is enhanced when the deltoid muscle contracts and space is created to allow for movement of the supraspinatus tendon. If the space is not created, pinching and irritation take place in association with movement. The scapulothoracic joint is the interface of the chest with the shoulder blade. The shoulder blade starts moving by the time the arm reaches 60 degrees out to the side. An osteopath complicates the picture even further. The profession recognizes that in order for the scapula to be able to glide normally over the rib cage, all of the ribs under the shoulder blade need to be functioning properly. There are six ribs under the shoulder blade and each of them attaches to the sternal cartilage

and then to the sternum, adding two additional types of joints to the calculation. Most ribs attach to two vertebrae via two different types of joints. Some would argue that the joints between the upper six thoracic vertebrae need to be working properly for the ribs to work properly. By the time things are all said and done, there are 39 joint articulations making up each shoulder girdle complex. Adding further to the misery of those seeking a black-andwhite answer are the facts that mechanical dysfunctions of the cervical spine can impact the nervous supply to the shoulder and arm and via an impact on the sympathetic nervous system can impact the blood supply to the arm. There are embryologic relationships between the muscles that make up the arm and organs, especially the liver and the lungs. Health or mechanical problems with those organs may also need to be addressed during treatment. An osteopathic approach to shoulder pain respects these complexities and often must start by re-establishing a healthy foundation starting with the ribs and vertebrae before ever beginning to work with the shoulder joints or soft tissues. the patients body establish a healthy foundation for the shoulder often leads to partial improvement and recurrence of pain in a repetitive cycle. Exercise alone may, on occasion, restore mobility and painless function of a shoulder and it is certainly necessary to optimize health and function. When portions of the shoulder girdle complex are mechanically not functioning or when there are soft tissue restrictions impacting blood flow or neurological input or output, exercise may aggravate pain, whereas osteopathic evaluation and treatment may relieve impediments to recovery and function.

Battling acne: How to win the war naturally

By Michelle Buchanan

cne at any age is distressing and scarring, damaging both the skin and self-image. Acne treatments recommended by allopathic doctors include prescription antibiotics and vitamin A derivatives (Accutane) with potentially devastating side effects. Chronic antibiotic use creates antibiotic-resistant super bugs and imbalanced healthy flora that leave the body susceptible to dangerous fungal infections such as clostridium difficile and candidiasis. Accutane can cause life-threatening birth defects, seizures, bone loss, liver and kidney damage and more. The most effective natural treatments for acne focus on both internal causes and external damage. Chronic acne has three distinct causes: chronic bacterial infections in the lymph system, compromised phase II liver detoxification and excessive male hormones called androgens. All three increase oil production and clog hair follicles, resulting in acne. Poor diet and hygiene will exacerbate acne. In order to be successful, natural treatments for acne should address all of these causes. First, the phase II liver detoxification pathways should be supported. Women with liver congestion create an enzyme that converts hormone precursors to male hormones. By supporting phase II detoxification, many women will stop the cycle of androgen dominance. Liver-detoxing herbs, minerals and B vitamins upregulate phase I liver detoxification and can potentially increase acne and hormonal imbalances. The best-tolerated phase II liver supporting supplements include:
Glutamine Methylsulfonylmethane N-Acetyl L-Cysteine Taurine Glutathione Methionine

Reducing the scarring from acne can be addressed using a therapeutic-grade essential oil blend called Gentle Baby from Young Living, which is generally recommended for scarring from stretch marks.
traditional saunas. Regular infrared sauna use provides a deep, productive sweat where toxins reside at the cellular level. If male hormones continue to dominate after 30 days of phase II liver support, hormone-balancing herbs such as licorice and maca root, tribulus, vitex and white peony can encourage proper hormone production. These herbs are usually taken at a higher dosage for two to three months and then reduced to a few times a week long term. The ALCAT live blood analysis for food and herbal intolerances can identify which of these hormone-regulating herbs will work most effectively. Saliva hormone panels can identify hormone imbalances for a fraction of the cost of bloodwork from traditional labs. Chronic, low-grade bacterial infections can be effectively addressed using soil-based probiotics (SBO). SBOs replace the naturally occurring beneficial organisms in the intestines that are now depleted due to current farming practices. These probiotics are significantly stronger than dairy cultured probiotics and avoid potential dairy allergens. SBOs also support the healthy flora that antibiotics and antibacterial herbs deplete. Therapeutic-grade essential oils such as oregano, clove, rosemary and thyme are considered

Infrared saunas are seven times more effective than traditional saunas for supporting phase II liver detoxification while producing significantly less perspiration. Infrared heat generates sweat with a toxin ratio of nearly 20 percent compared to 3 percent from

the strongest of the natural antibacterial substances. Die-off from bacterial infections further burden the liver and should be addressed after a minimum of two weeks on phase II liver support. Reducing the scarring from acne can be addressed using a therapeutic-grade essential oil blend called Gentle Baby from Young Living, which is generally recommended for scarring from stretch marks. When combined with near infrared sauna use, scarring and skin appearance dramatically improves within weeks. A study published in The Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy showed significant improvements in overall skin tone, including softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness, as well as a reduction in wrinkles and crows feet after just 12 weeks of Sunlightens nearinfrared sauna technology. A well-rounded holistic approach to supporting balanced hormone levels, beneficial bacteria and phase II liver detoxification can provide lasting relief from acne while benefiting every aspect of your health. When you look inside for the root cause of the manifestations of acne, lifelong improved skin health is the reward.

Forgiveness, stress and health

By Hallie Ringhand

hen it comes to our health goals, it is all too easy to get off track. It has happened to all of us and will happen again. The best way to stay the course, be present and be OK with some messiness and chaos is to forgive. Beginning with ourselves, we must forgive in order to move forward. When we hold on to past events coupled with the emotions that went along with them, our bodies react in order to process that emotion. Having chronically elevated levels of cortisol and other stress hormones has a very real negative effect on our health.

Forgiveness is a process that begins with ourselves and ends with forgiving the most difficult people in our lives. Its a daily undertaking and depending on the hurt, can take time. This can be the hardest thing to do but know it will be the most rewarding, freeing experience you will ever have. And it opens up big doors for improved health and future relationships. Forgiveness is freedom and it creates space in our hearts to love more fully and move ahead lighter and happier.

Inflammation in the body interferes with sleep and energy. Omega-3s reduce inflammation, increase clarity, assist in brain development and increase the firing activity in the aging brain; however, most of us are deficient in Omega-3s. The recommended dose of these fatty acids is 3 grams per day coming from DHA and EPA. ALA, EPA and DHA decrease the inflammatory response that causes pain and altered mood and increase the response of the feel good hormone. Its when we feel good that we function well and have the ability to do bigger things, like forgive.

Common workout mistakes

hose people already a few months into their New Years resolutions to get fit may find that all the effort at the gym is not paying off as they expected. Although exercise results vary, certain behaviors impact just how much weight a person can lose and how efficient their workouts are. To increase the measurable results of workouts, avoid these common mistakes:

over and over, your body becomes acclimated to that routine and your muscles recognize the motion. As a result, your body doesnt have to work as hard to do the workout. Altering your routine means you are essentially keeping your body on its proverbial toes. This will help you to burn more calories and even prevent you from getting bored with your workout.

but cardiovascular exercise alone is not enough to achieve optimal health. Strength training helps build lean muscle and strengthen bones, so its important to make both cardiovascular and strength training exercises a part of your workout routine.

Maintaining a moderate pace.

Not giving it enough time.

Skipping strength training.

Many people want to see immediate results when they begin a new exercise regimen. While some forms of instant gratification are possible, its foolish to expect to wake up and look in the mirror after a weeks time and see a complete body transformation. Many health experts say a safe weight loss goal is one to two pounds each week. For each pound of fat to burn, you need to shed 3,500 calories weekly. Do this by exercising and reducing caloric intake. Dont give up prematurely. After a few months, your clothes will fit better and youll see a change in muscle tone and overall fitness level.

Cardiovascular activities like running on the treadmill can certainly burn calories,

Much like doing the same exercises over and over, sticking to the same pace will lull your body into complacency. Vary the pace of your workout so that you move through

Time to spring clean the body and lose weight before summer!
By Dee Dee Delkamp and Angela Rahm
s spring approaches, many of us feel the urge to clean our homes, but what about cleaning our bodies? Cleansing our bodies from time to time is very important, even if you feel that you eat right, drink enough water, exercise and try to eliminate as many environmental toxins as possible. Our bodies have an innate ability to cleanse, and spring is the most natural time

for our bodies to accomplish this. Here are some fairly easy things most people can do to help the body to cleanse and detoxify: Eliminate caffeine, sugar, alcohol, dairy and all grains containing gluten. Avoid heavy foods and begin eating more raw fruits and vegetables (organic whenever possible) and whole grains

Begin slowly increasing clean water intake

such as brown rice and quinoa.

to eventually drink half your bodyweight in ounces. Alkaline water is best. Drink 16 ounces or more of fresh vegetable and/or fruit juice per day. Try colon hydrotherapy to help eliminate buildup in the colon and help support the liver. Using herbs to protect the liver is also important. Utilize detox foot baths, dry skin brushing and far infrared saunas. Fasting can also be helpful for some people with the guidance of a holistic health practitioner. What if you could detox your cells at the same time you lose fat by simply relaxing? Believe it or not, it is possible. Lipo laser technology like the i-Lipo does just that. Low light lasers have been used in conjunction with traditional liposuction since the 1960s. Today, with the advances in laser technology, you can get comparable results without surgery, pain or downtime. There are several laser lipo procedures available; however, make sure the one you choose is FDA approved for fat reduction and offers post treatment suggestions that fit your goals. With an effective treatment, the laser permeates the adipose tissue of the skin. It

beams through the cell membrane changing the pH of the cell, breaking down the triglycerides in the cell. The liquefied contents (including stored fat and toxins) of the fat cells release into the interstitial tissue (lymphatic system) ready to be burned by the body as energy. Detoxing fat cells are safest when you consume plenty of water. It is said that drinking 64 ounces of water, a balanced diet, participating in an exercise plan and following the detox approaches above, will keep your cells and your lymphatic system in good shape for detoxing and fat loss. intense, moderate and slow movements. Higher intensity parts of the workout will get your heart pumping and burn calories.

Making unnatural body movements.

Movements that mimic the bodys natural movements will be more effective at toning muscles. These movements include bending, stepping, jumping, and running. Unnatural movements may not be practical, and they may increase your risk of injury.

Working out alone.

When you work out alone, you do not have the benefit of friendly competition to motivate you as you exercise. With no one to motivate you, you may be content to stick to a certain number of repetitions instead of trying a little harder. A partner can provide camaraderie and help you make the most of your exercise regimen.

Ignoring possible injury.

No one is immune to injury, which can result from lifting weights that are too heavy or using improper form. If you feel you are hurt, dont make things worse by ignoring an injury. The body needs time to recover from injury, and ignoring an injury can lead to additional problems that will only extend that recovery time.

Listening to your bodys needs

By Kathryn Coppola
here are many aspects to being a good athlete, regardless of the level at which you perform. Sticking to a training schedule, carefully planning your diet and consciously planning time to rest and recover, all play a major role in your performance. However, an often overlooked element, and one that can have a dramatic effect on your next event, is actively listening to what your body needs and providing for it accordingly. Intense, prolonged or overtraining can take a toll on your immune system. Weve

all experienced those poorly timed colds and upper respiratory tract infections the ones where youve been training for a long time and shortly before the competition, some bug makes its way into your system. Well, here is the good news: a study of professional female soccer players showed that players who received acupuncture were able to prevent the decrease in salivary

antibody count while at the peak of their training intensity. Soccer players who were not treated with acupuncture felt more fatigued both mentally and physically and reported increased muscle tension, while those who were treated with acupuncture indicated no change in fatigue or muscle tension during three days of competition. Your body needs proper nutrients to fuel your muscles while youre working out. Even if youre eating a healthy diet, if your body isnt able to digest the food you eat, you wont have access to those nutrients. Optimizing your digestion can boost your energy and shorten recovery time. Consider this analogy: even the strongest professional cyclists can be slowed down by flat tires, rubbing brakes and worn out bearings. The energy theyre putting into the pedals is not being transferred efficiently to propel the bike forward. The same goes for your digestive system: if the nutrients you are putting into your body are not being properly digested, theyre as wasted as the energy a cyclist puts into riding a bike with flat tires. There are several ways in which acupuncture can help to ensure youre properly digesting your food and energizing your muscles.

Pure mind, pure world

By Donna Sereda
veryone enjoys being in clean, beautiful, peaceful surroundings. But if the outer world is a reflection of our mind, as Buddha Shakyamuni taught, then what does the current state of our environment say about the state of our inner world? Whether it is ones personal environment or the bigger world environment under consideration, you are probably thinking that some improvements are in order! In the book How to Solve Our Human Problems, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says, All our problems... come from our delusions of attachment and self-grasping ignorance, therefore these delusions are the main causes of our problems. Delusions such as anger, attachment, self-cherishing and so forth are like inner pollution. And like outer pollutants that damage the environment, these delusions cause us to act in ways that are damaging to ourselves and others. By listening to and contemplating Buddhas teachings, we can learn how to overcome our delusions to create a pure and peaceful inner environment. If our mind is peaceful, all our outer actions will become peaceful and positive as well. There is nothing more important than our own actions. The word karma means action. The basic meaning of Buddhas teachings on karma is that what we do determines what we experience. If we engage in nonvirtuous actions, we will have unpleasant experiences, and if we practice virtue, we will experience happiness and good conditions. Therefore, we need to engage in the best types of actions. Because all actions of body and speech are preceded by mental intention, it is helpful to understand the characteristics of a virtuous mind if we wish to improve our actions.
www.naturespathways.com

Geshe Kelsang describes 11 virtuous mental factors in the book Understanding the Mind. For example, one of these factors is consideration for others. By developing a mind that cherishes other living beings and strives to act toward them with consideration, we will definitely change our inner environment into a more peaceful state. Our outer environment will begin to reflect this change, too. Buddha always urged his followers not to follow him blindly, accepting whatever he said, but to think deeply about his teachings and to reflect upon ones own experiences. We can begin to do this right now. Consider how a wish to treat all other living beings with consideration might affect the choices we make on a daily basis. If everyone acted with consideration, what

would the world look like? We might not have much power right now to change others thinking or behavior, but we definitely can change our own mind, transforming it from a negative, deluded state to one characterized by positivity and happiness. We have the power to clean up our inner environment. By listening to Buddhas teachings, gaining understanding through meditation and putting Buddhas advice into action in our everyday life, we can each make a profound, personal impact on our world. Happy Earth Day!

Why do I keep getting sick?

The keys to understanding digestion
By Jamie Weber RDN, CD, CLC

could be indicators of poor digestion? Our body requires certain pH levels and enzymes, as well as the correct microbial balance, to digest and properly absorb our food. Some foods, such as carbohydrates (CHO), begin digestion as soon as they hit our mouth. Our mouth should have a pH around 7.4. As food passes through our esophagus and into our stomach, the stomachs normal response is to release hydrochloric acid (HCL), which will decrease the pH level to between 1 and 2. This is important because if the pH isnt decreased to this level, our stomach will not produce pepsin. Pepsin is an enzyme responsible for the digestion of protein, and it promotes calcium, B12, zinc and iron utilization. Another issue with inadequate HCL is decreased bile production in the liver. Bile is important in the digestion and absorption of fats. Is it hard for you to eat fat? Are you one of those individuals who wont take a fish oil supplement because you burp it up or get diarrhea? This may be happening because you dont have enough bile salts to digest and absorb the fats in the fish oil. In a well-functioning body, as food

travels from our stomach and passes into our small intestines, the pH increases from 1 to 8.3. The pancreas has released enzymes: amylase, protease and lipase, which help with the breakdown and absorption of food. This is where a majority of absorption takes place. Once food reaches the large intestine (colon), the good bacteria manufacture B12, thiamine, riboflavin and vitamin K. Reabsorption of water will happen in the colon, which will help form and expel stools. This only happens with a pH around 6.8.

processed foods and sugar, as well as choosing nonorganic meats and dairy, which are laden with growth hormones, antibiotics and pesticides Immune system challenges: Parasites, yeast and bacteria overgrowth Internal gut environment: Lack of HCL, enzymes or bile and improper pH levels Hormone imbalances: Stress will trigger the release of cortisol and will shut off digestion due to decreased HCL production

What should I do if I suspect issues with digestion?

Oxygen is just as important to your muscles as proper nutrients. Your muscles use oxygen to break down glucose and create ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, the energy cells need to function. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 20 million people in the U.S. currently suffer from asthma. The CDC likens the narrowing or blockage of airways in asthma to breathing through a straw that is stuffed with cotton, making it challenging for your muscles to get oxygen and therefore the energy that they need to work efficiently. A systematic review of studies showed that acupuncture led to a significant improvement of breathlessness in patients with either asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Furthermore, when your body doesnt have enough oxygen, it goes into an anaerobic state leading to a buildup of lactic acid. Not only can acupuncture help to decrease the bodys need for oxygen post exercise, but it also decreases the amount of lactic acid buildup. Even with careful training and correct form, injuries can still occur. Iliotibial (IT) band tightness, shin splints, ankle sprains, muscle strains, Achilles tendonitis, knee, back and neck pain are all common among every level of athlete.

Acupuncture has a proven track record in decreasing pain, swelling, stiffness and bruising. Acupuncture triggers the release of endorphins to naturally relieve pain, while the needles also release muscle and myofascial tension to increase your range of motion. Treating these injuries as soon as possible can help to shorten the recovery time and get you back out on the field, road or court. Whether youre a triathlete gearing up for Ironman, training for your first 5 kilometer run, or you just want to be in tip-top shape, consider acupuncture to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Stress and how hypnosis can help

By James E. Todd Jr.
Stress is when you wake up screaming and realize you havent fallen asleep yet. Author unknown from stressful events quicker than others. Its important to know your limits when it comes to stress to avoid more serious health effects. things like commuting to and from school or work every day, traveling for a yearly vacation, homework, sports commitments or moving to another home. Changes can be mild and relatively harmless, such as winning a race, watching a scary movie or riding a rollercoaster. Some changes are major, such as marriage or divorce, serious illness, or a car accident. Other changes are extreme, such as exposure to violence, and can lead to traumatic stress reactions.

tress just the word may be enough to set your nerves on edge. Everyone feels stressed from time to time. From adults to teens and younger children, we live in a fast-paced society where day-to-day demands can take a toll. Some people may cope with stress more effectively, or recover

What is stress?

Stress can be defined as the brains response to any demand. Many things can trigger this response, including change. Changes can be positive or negative, as well as real or perceived. They may be recurring, short term, or long term and may include

Not all stress is bad. All animals have a stress response, which can be lifesaving in some situations. The nerve chemicals and hormones released during such stressful times prepares the animal to face a threat or flee to safety. When you face a dangerous situation, your pulse quickens, you breathe faster, your muscles tense and your brain uses more oxygen and increases activity all functions aimed at survival. In the short term, it can even boost the immune system. This is called the flight or fight response. However, with chronic stress, those same nerve chemicals that are lifesaving in short bursts can suppress functions that arent needed for immediate survival. Problems occur if the stress response goes on too long, such as when the source of stress is constant, or if the response continues after the danger has subsided.

How does stress affect your overall health?

There are at least three different types of stress, all of which carry physical and mental health risks:
1. Routine stress related to the pressures

sounds. The hypnotist will vocally guide you during your personalized session. If people are looking for immediate

results versus other long-term methods, hypnosis can be the most effective tool for changing beliefs and/or behaviors.

of work, family and other daily responsibilities 2. Stress brought about by a sudden negative change, such as losing a job, divorce or illness 3. Traumatic stress can result from major accidents, a crime being committed against you, serving in the military during time of war or being involved in a natural disaster that has injured you or put your life at risk. The body responds to each type of stress in similar ways. Different people may feel it in different ways. For example, some people experience mainly digestive symptoms, while others may have headaches, sleeplessness, depressed mood, anger and irritability. People under chronic stress are prone to more frequent and severe viral infections, such as the flu or common cold, and vaccines such as the flu shot are less effective for them. Of all the types of stress, changes in health from routine stress may be hardest to notice at first. Because the source of stress tends to be more constant than in cases of acute or traumatic stress, the body gets no clear signal to return to normal functioning. People sometimes turn to ways of dealing with stress, such as binge eating, smoking, drinking alcohol, etc. Over time, continued strain on your body from routine stress may lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, anxiety disorders and other illnesses.

Why is my skin so dry, itchy and dull? Are there any solutions?
Miriam Tsukanova
hose with issues like dry, itchy and dull skin are recommended to try Dead Sea mud body wrap treatments. For centuries, people all around the world have been enjoying the benefits of mud baths and body wraps for their medicinal and aesthetic properties. Dependent on its location of harvest, mud is abundant and rich in its own regional mineral content. Dead Sea mud is famous for its unique properties, such as its very high concentration of potassium, magnesium, sodium, bromine, calcium and essential minerals for the bodys balance. Harvested from the ancient waters of the Dead Sea itself, the mud is great for relaxation, detoxification, re-mineralization, rejuvenation, relief from aching joints, dry or oily skin conditions and stiffness in muscles. Dead Sea mud body wrap treatments normally include: cleansing, exfoliation with aromatherapy oils and a salt scrub, Dead Sea mud mask application for your back, hands and feet wrap, and a relaxation scalp massage followed by a hot towel mask removal and a whole body massage. This treatment is excellent for any time of the year but especially good for winter and spring because our skin is changing with the seasons.

imbalance will appear first in the skin. In only a days time the skin can release a pound of waste. This alone validates the importance of keeping your skin at its peak of health. If toxins are unable to release through the skin, they will accumulate in fat cells and add to the appearance of cellulite. Additionally, unnecessary toxins can continue to overwhelm the blood stream, overworking the liver, kidneys and other detoxifying organs.

Otherwise you may just be layering on top of dead skin and wasting your product. Since it may be hard to perform a body wrap at home on yourself, I recommend that you seek the advice and treatment from a skin care professional! A textured life
The many layers of Lindsay Lenos clothing exchange, UpShift
By Rebecca Bentz

t takes a bit of daring to pull off fashions that leave others raving about your style for years to come, but at UpShift, it doesnt have to take a lot of cash. Add in an opportunity to socialize, better the earth and even enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, and the Madison clothing exchange seems like a dream come true and for owner Lindsay Leno, it is. Eco-conscious fashion has long been close to Lenos heart. During her time as a clothing designer, she worked elbow-to-elbow with fellow designers who were dressed in fresh-off-the-rack Armani. Leno, though, stayed trendy by giving new life to secondhand clothes she discovered at Goodwill. She also noted an incredible amount of waste in the fashion industry, not only in the design of garments, but in their packaging and shipping as well. This inspired her to start UpShift. I realized that there was something I could do on a personal level, and that was doing this type of a business, Leno recalls.

STRUCTURING THE OUTFIT

Upshift is neither a consignment store, nor a regular thrift shop. Instead, this boutique is a way for women to clean

out their closets and refresh their wardrobes, all for less than the cost of a full tank of gas. Its a simple and sustainable system: Shoppers bring in up to three bags of gently used clothes, shoes, accessories or jewelry, and pay a $20 cover charge. Next, they peruse the boutique, try on what they like and fill their shopping bags with an exchange of goods even to that which they brought in: a bag for a bag. Thanks to the exchange process, UpShifts inventory is entirely selfsustaining and always changing. The store places new products every day and Leno estimates that on the boutiques busiest days, shoppers bring in hundreds of pieces to exchange. Someone who shopped yesterday could come in and essentially access all new garments today, she explains. But while the inventory changes daily, UpShifts focus on presenting available garments in a trendy yet shopperfriendly manner never does. I feel so strongly about secondhand clothes. I want women to see that there is a value in them, Leno says. To achieve this, she has focused on creating an inviting environment. While UpShift will

accept garments for any season, the staff only place pieces on the sales floor that will appeal to shoppers at that particular time of year. New items are publicized on the boutiques Facebook page and paired with complementary pieces so that shoppers might be able to visualize how those garments will fit their particular style.

PERFECTING THE DESIGN

Leno began crafting UpShifts business model in 2008. Her plan for the store grew out of gatherings held at her house, where she and her designer friends would swap clothes. The group hung out, enjoyed some wine and built whole new wardrobes for themselves. This type of fun atmosphere, in addition to sustainable fashion opportunities, was what Leno wanted to bring to women in the Madison area. In early 2011, Leno got started. She first tested the UpShift model in the lower level of her apartment building. It started out open by appointment only, but as word about the clothing exchange spread, Leno opened the shop for a fourhour window, one night a week. She soon gained a number of loyal customers, whom she credits with helping UpShift

get to where it is now: a beautiful, bright boutique at 836 E. Johnson St. The new location opened in October of 2013 and customers are now able to recycle fashions at the clothing exchange seven days a week. Its been a bit of a change for Leno, who knew each and every customers name when UpShift first started, but she is happy the business is expanding and still takes time to connect with shoppers. Weve had a really great response, Leno says. Some of our old customers are coming in monthly or every other week and were still getting new customers every single day.

of every month, the cover charge is halved to $10, complimentary wine is available and a local stylist offers up her services to help shoppers decide how to supplement their closets with the pieces at UpShift. The next stylist events are scheduled for Sunday, April 20, and Sunday, May 18. Leno also offers shoppers the opportunity to host their own private afterhours and stylist parties at UpShift.

MAKING RETURNS
The garments arent the only things in UpShift that have been given new purpose. Everything in our store, from mannequins to hangers, is all secondhand. We make sure we compiled everything from either donation or from purchasing it from the Habitat for Humanity store or the UW SWAP Shop, Leno says. Were making sure that we are keeping this stuff out of the landfills. The boutique also donates to local charities the quality garments that dont sell quickly or simply dont match with the particular style sought after by UpShift customers. Lenos also giving back to the community by opening UpShifts doors to local businesses and Madison Area Technical College fashion program students. These students can gain real-world experience in fashion marketing through their work at UpShift as well as hope for their future careers. Seeing the passion of those college students, as well as the excitement of loyal and new customers alike, reinforces for Leno that shes doing the right thing and having fun at the same time. Its true. I love what I do.

The clothes might be secondhand, but the fashions youll find in UpShift are anything but pass. If youre interested in finding your own chic new look, visit Lindsay Leno and the rest of the UpShift crew at 836 E. Johnson St., Madison, where you can exchange clothing and accessories between the hours of 12 p.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

ACCESSORIZING
UpShift isnt just a place to swap and shop. Its also a great place to have fun with friends and meet new people. Leno recalls recently chatting with two new customers, both mothers with young children, who explained that they loved shopping for new clothes, but they were also just happy to be out of the house and enjoying the company of others. Another customer overheard their conversation and exclaimed that she had come to UpShift for the exact same reason. It is a destination, Leno says of UpShift. Its something for them to go and do, but theyre walking away with a value, because theyre getting all new clothes. Instances like this show Leno that the boutique really is on the right track. I hear people laughing and having fun, trying clothes on, and that is exactly why I created the business model that we have. It really is for that social experience. Leno fosters that atmosphere through various events at the store. The first Thursday of every month, shoppers can bring a friend and that friend shops for free. The next two-for-one events are set for Thursday, April 3 and Thursday, May 1. On the third Sunday

as they generally occur together. Individuals who experience the atopic syndrome have a predisposition toward developing allergic hypersensitivity reactions to a variety of things. You probably know you are not alone, as your risk of suffering from atopy doubles with each first degree relative (parent, sibling, child) who also experiences one of these symptoms. Most people who have allergic hypersensitivity find themselves needing multiple medications for symptom control. Some of these common medications are antihistamines, nasal decongestants and steroids. ANTIHISTAMINES: Antihistamines block the action of histamine on cellular receptors. These medications are effective for the treatment of allergic symptoms because they decrease blood vessel permeability and thereby decrease the amount of fluids that escape from capillaries into tissues. One of the disadvantages of antihistamines is that they dry up mucosal membranes and predispose infectious conditions. They also affect the immune system in other ways by which the exact mechanism is uncertain, as there is up to a 3.5-fold increase in the risk for glioma (a type of brain tumor) associated with long term anti-histamine use. NASAL DECONGESTANTS: Oxymetazoline (found in Afrin and some other brand names) is particularly worthy of mention as it is one of the most dependency promoting over-the-counter medications. This medication causes the blood vessels to constrict and provides temporary relief from symptoms. However, rebound dilation of the vessels occurs, leading to a dependence on such medication to avoid rebound symptoms. Additionally, common additives in oxymetazoline nasal sprays may damage nasal mucosal membranes and worsen symptoms. CORTICOSTEROIDS: One of the most common used treatments for a variety of immune-mediated conditions are corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are delivered topically, by inhalation and orally for more severe or systemic conditions. There are many side effects of corticosteroid treatment especially when used long term. Oral corticosteroids increase the risk of osteoporosis, gastritis and

The myth and magic of Palo Santo wood

By Andrew and Luna Lynn Frey

eath begins the magical story of the Palo Santo (or Holy Wood) tree. The aromatic tree, also known by its botanical name, Bursera graveolens, is native to the dry forests and the Galapagos Islands of South America. The tall tropical Palo Santo tree comes from the same family (Bursera) as frankincense and myrrh. The intriguing aspect, though, is that when the tree dies naturally, an alchemical process takes place. After resting in this cathartic state of nonlife in its natural habitat for four to 10 years, a new journey begins for the wood. A metamorphosis occurs which infuses the wood with powerful medicinal, mystical and sacred properties. Curanderos, shamans and the healers of the Inca as well as other indigenous communities of the Andes, have been using (and continue to use) this amazing wood for thousands of years in their traditional ceremonies and rituals in a similar way to how North American Indians utilize white sage. They use it as a spiritual cleanser and purifier that aids in removing bad energies and evil spirits as well as other misfortunes. A traditional incense that utilizes Palo Santo is called sahumerio. Sahumerio literally means perfuming with incense. This delightful mixture is a combination of Palo Santo, eucalyptus, rosemary, alucema (lavender) and myrrh. Another incense blend is called Cocomama to honor the Incan goddess of health and happiness. This powerful incense blend is used to bring health and wellness into your life and is best burned at night or just before dawn. It can be made by combining and mixing 10 grams (white) copal, 5 grams dark Mayan copal, 5 grams Palo Santo pieces, 1.5 grams Brazilian rosewood pieces and 4 drops of white wine. Recent studies have shown that Palo Santo wood is rich with medicinal components. It is an antiseptic, a sedative and a pain reliever especially beneficial for muscle pains. Palo Santo is well known for its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing actions, and can be used topically in treating skin infections, cuts, burns and acne.
www.naturespathways.com

Palo Santo oil is a very powerful antioxidant because of its high d-limonene content. The essential oil is distilled from the heartwood of the Palo Santo tree. This oil contains an unprecedented 60 percent d-limonene, which is unheard of in tree oil. Animal studies have shown that d-limonene protects against pancreatic, stomach, colon, skin and liver cancers. Palo Santo is traditionally used for relieving common cold and flu symptoms, asthma, allergies, migraines and headaches, stress, anxiety, depression, inflammation, sea sickness, arthritis and more. A tea can be made to aid in the relief of flu, cough and asthma by boiling sticks for 15 minutes and sweetening with sugar or honey. When burned, this evocative wood creates a pleasant, fresh smelling smoke. It provides an uplifting scent that raises your vibration in preparation for meditation and allows for a deeper connection to all that is. It also works well in keeping away mosquitoes and

Delve deeper into your muscle restrictions with cupping therapy

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT, NCBMT

ften in life it seems that returning to basics is the best plan. Cupping therapy has been used by ancient indigenous tribes across several continents including the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been around for thousands of years and still utilizes cupping therapy today as part of regular medical treatment for pain and disease. It has gained recent stardom from celebrities who have tried it; Gwyneth Paltrow and Oprah even talked about how amazing it feels. So, what is this cupping therapy? Cupping therapy uses suction to create negative pressure above the surface of muscular and epidermal tissues. It results in restrictions and adhesions in the muscles being more easily released than through compression techniques utilized in traditional massage and bodywork therapies. Cupping therapy can also reach more deeply into the tissues than a therapists hands. Blood flow is increased to the affected area, and blood vessels widen when the muscles relax. The nervous system is also stimulated, which helps the body recover from pain. Therapists can achieve results much more quickly through cupping therapy than with traditional compression, and can quite often alleviate chronic, long-term pain quite rapidly, sometimes even in just a few sessions. Cupping therapy is great for shoulder pain, low back, hip or sciatica pain, or really any joint or fascial pain that you may be dealing with (knee, wrist, plantar fasciitis and more). Even numbness from nerve restrictions can be alleviated through cupping therapy. Blood and lymph might be stagnant in the areas of muscle restrictions (kind of like a traffic jam), along with a buildup of waste products from the lack of oxygen in the restricted tissues. Those will all get pulled to the surface of the skin, so there may be
46
Natures Pathways | April 2014

some coloration after a cupping therapy session that will go away over the next several days to a week. Dont be alarmed! It might look like a bruise but it most certainly is not no capillaries get broken with cupping therapy. Rather, fluids are being pulled through the restricted tissues so that they can then be moved by the circulatory and lymph systems. The waste products can then finally get processed where they belong. Cupping therapy is also utilized in conjunction with TCM to treat a variety of diseases, and it works very well with respiratory conditions. Cups are placed along specific acupressure points to achieve specific results based on the TCM diagnosis. So beyond working with your blood, lymph and nervous systems, a practitioner can also work with your qi and energetic meridians with cupping therapy (if your practitioner has been trained in TCM). And that coloration mentioned before? Each type of color that surfaces means something different in TCM as to what is going on with the body. Cupping therapy is widely performed by acupuncturists, and is becoming more commonly practiced by massage and bodywork therapists. Look for a practitioner who has studied Asian bodywork and/or Eastern medicine and who has received training in cupping therapy. Contraindications do exist, application methods do matter and it is important to select a practitioner who has been trained to treat you properly.
Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT, NCBMT, and Member AOBTA, is the owner of Renu Massage and Day Spa, specializing in Asian bodywork therapies and the Eastern healing arts, while promoting organic and sustainable living. Heidi and her team of therapists all strive to achieve balance in each session through the use of energy work incorporated into their bodywork therapies. For more information, visit renumadison.com.

gastric reflux, contribute to insulin resistance (promoting diabetes) and central weight gain, and decrease immune response. Topical and inhaled formulations carry less of these risks; however, they often lead to local tissue atrophy and candida overgrowth due to decreased immune surveillance. NATUROPATHIC APPROACH: One might think that April is just a bit too early to start thinking about allergies, but naturopathic intervention is most effective when initiated prior to the onset of allergy symptoms. Different supplements that decrease allergic reactions include stinging nettle, quercetin and bromelain, as well as probiotics and fish oil. Naturopaths also commonly assess for other things which cause the immune system to be in a hyper-responsive allergic state. This often involves assessment for food sensitivities and healing protocols for the gut. As a large portion of our immune system resides in our gut, keeping it in balance requires addressing what is going on there. By taking the proper actions prior to allergy season, you are much more likely to keep your symptoms in check and find yourself able to enjoy the spring!
Dr. Carrie Decker is a board-certified naturopathic doctor with the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners, graduating with honors from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Ore., and practicing at Blessed Thistle LLC. other flying insects! Unlike conventional incense, which burns completely after lighting, this wood may be relit multiple times. Being smudged with Palo Santo feels refreshing and invigorating. I am entitled to miracles!
By Rev. Deborah Phelps

o you find the idea of being entitled to miracles startling? I found it unbelievable when I first encountered this idea in A Course in Miracles more than 20 years ago. I thought, That cant be true! Im not worthy of miracles. Ive never been entitled to anything but pain and problems. Ive always been told Id never amount to anything. How could I be entitled to miracles? Nor did I understand what the course meant by the word miracles. As I grew up, my concept of miracles was largely limited to miraculous healings at holy shrines where people left their crutches behind. It was something that might happen occasionally to people who were worthy. It wasnt an everyday thing, and it certainly wasnt for me. I wasnt good enough for God and His miracles. The course describes a miracle as a shift in perception, or a shift in our thinking. This shift moves us out of our fear thoughts and into our loving thoughts. We mostly live in our fear (or ego) thoughts. We experience these thoughts as worries, problems, upsets, grievances, anger, bitterness and so on. When the course says that we are entitled to miracles, its saying that we are entitled to love. Love created us like itself. Love is our true identity, so of course we are entitled to miracles of love and peace of mind, every moment of every day. Before I started asking for miracles, I was entrenched in misery. I grew up burdened with fear, guilt, shame, depression and abuse. I kept my anger buried deep. Occasionally, it burst through to the surface, and it wasnt pretty. I carried that pain with me into young adulthood. My self-loathing landed me in two abusive marriages. My third ex-husband sexually abused two of my daughters. I truly believed that I was unworthy, a bad mother and unlovable. I did not remotely believe that God was love and that I was loved by Him. I mentally abused myself more than anyone could abuse me on a physical level. In fact, Id say I was an expert at self-torture. But all that time, the truth was there, deep within me. Although I wasnt aware, truth was with me all throughout the gut-wrenching pain I experienced. Then, A Course in Miracles entered my
Natures Pathways | April 2014

life, giving me the tools of forgiveness to lift myself out of the darkness and into the light. Its daily practice was like an outstretched hand that upheld me and kept me from falling into the dark pit. My life became a practice of miracles, receiving and extending love and being of service. I married my current husband, Rev. Paul, and our relationship has been a source of healing as we offer our marriage to the divine as a holy relationship. We can see through our fears, and we can accept the love that we each are. I hope my story shows you that whatever hardships you experience, whatever negative self-concepts you believe about yourself, whatever hateful things others may say about you none of it matters. Maybe you carry great burdens. Maybe youve been betrayed. It doesnt matter. You are still a beloved child of God and you are entitled to miracles. You can change your beliefs about yourself and experience a miracle. Miracles enable you to release all the false beliefs about yourself and hear what God says instead: You are perfect in spirit. I love you. I am here to comfort you. Let me take care of you. Come to my loving arms. Heres a simple little practice: Close your eyes and say slowly and thoughtfully, I am entitled to miracles. Remind yourself that you are asking for what is already yours. By asking for miracles, you are asking for your true self to be revealed to you. Sit in silence for a few minutes. Focus on your breath if you find that helpful. If your mind starts to wander, go back to the thought, I am entitled to miracles. You are indeed entitled to the miracle of experiencing divine love within. Excerpted from I am Entitled to Miracles! by Rev. Deborah Phelps.

Did you know you are a superorganism?

By Meredith Rhodes Carson

e humans are amazing, living, breathing, physical beings a fact that many of us take for granted. But something that is even more amazing is that only 10 percent of the cells in our bodies are actually human cells. The other 90 percent are the ones that make up our microbiome. Your microbiome is a unique, symbiotic, commensal and/ or pathogenic community of microorganisms that are hosted in and on your body including bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi and parasites. If you were to combine them all together, 100 trillion cells would be about the size of a football with an estimated weight of 3 pounds! Researchers are just now beginning to understand the importance of our individual microbiomes, which some refer to as the forgotten organ. It is increasingly clear that the diversity and composition of our skin and gut ora directly aects our health and wellness. A healthy microbiome helps to strengthen your immune system by always challenging it, or by training it in some way. Microbiomes aid in the digestion and assimilation of nutrients in your body. Some of them have biochemical pathways that directly aect your mood and mental outlook. Some researchers

Your microbes can only keep your health in check when you feed them foods that they can eat and when you eliminate things that are toxic to them.

think that your microbiome dictates bodyweight by inuencing metabolism, while others theorize that it may even aect your gene expression. Unfortunately, our modern way of life was created with only human cells in mind. Weve sterilized our environments and our bodies. Weve intervened in nature not only in the form of pesticides, herbicides and GMOs, but also in our own reproductive process. Weve created petrochemicals and articial fragrances in the name of beauty and wellness. We slather these concoctions all over our bodies without any conrmation of their safety. Weve moved into climate-controlled and winterized dwellings that eectively seal out any ecological interaction and fresh air. Weve manufactured shelf-stable food products that contain preservatives, articial colors and avors, and chemically processed and genetically engineered seed oils. We even give our babies manufactured foods over breast milk. The other 90 percent of our cells are starting to scream at us in the form of various health crises. We can travel anywhere we want today and pick up all sorts of foreign microbes for better or worse. All of these

modern conveniences are potentially wreaking havoc on our microbiomes. But there is good news! Your microbiome can literally be shifted within hours, although it may take weeks or more for you to feel a physical or mental dierence. Your microbes can only keep your health in check when you feed them foods that they can eat and when you eliminate things that are toxic to them. Here are a few things that you can do to protect and cultivate your microbiome: Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics and medicines. Avoid antibacterial soaps or limit soap in general. Go outside often and put your hands and feet in the dirt. Opt out of foods that are engineered with pesticides. Opt out of conventional produce that is sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. Opt out of processed foods that contain preservatives, articial ingredients and refined seed oils. Consume more fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, ker, yogurt, natto) which contain trillions of microbes (as opposed to billions found in probiotics). Use chemical-free (not just organic) personal care products to reduce your toxic load, to give your immune system a break and to protect your skin and gut ora. In a life where humans tend to accept the status quo without question, we are limiting our health and wellness possibilities. We also

tend to not see any good reason to change course, even in the face of illness. If you begin to imagine your body as the superorganism it is, you may begin to question the selection of the foods that you eat or the products that you use. Its time to become a more gracious host.

Whats for dinner?

By Lea Dolan-Stroncek

hats for dinner? This question is complicated when navigating the problems that plague our food system. Frequently, there are alerts, recalls and new clinical findings to tell us what to eat and what to avoid, which leads one to believe that there is a food desert out there. The consequences of our choices can lead to excess toxins and estrogen, not to mention the life-threatening pathogens that are now antibiotic resistant.

Making the simple choice of which type of food to consume is as controversial as politics, and carries a stigma given by some unlike-minded individuals. For the kindred spirits out there who choose to eat wild and healthy, I have chosen a few of my favorite recipes.

Salt and Pepper Steak

Seven Seeds F arm

Steak can be the trickiest cut to cook because of the narrow margin of error and this is especially true with grass-fed beef. In this case, less is more. One can easily overcomplicate the flavor and tenderness by rushing to defrost, overseason and overcook, leaving steak uneatable. The key point is to plan ahead. To successfully cook your steak, first gather everything you will need. The cook time is fast, so be prepared. In addition to the following ingredients, you will need: A digital Thermapen (the most accurate thermometer), along with tongs and a stainless steel pan. Ingredients include: 2 Seven Seeds Farm steaks 1 teaspoon sea salt 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 2 teaspoons raw or brown sugar 1 tablespoon healthy oil, such as ghee or coconut oil

LLC

Take the steak out of the freezer to let it thaw to room temperature. To expedite this process you can sprinkle 1 teaspoon sea salt and 1 teaspoon of kosher salt over both steaks sides and let the meat rest or place it in tepid warm water (the latter is for vacuum-packed steaks only). Place thawed steaks on a wire rack and set on a rimmed baking sheet. Pat steaks dry with paper towels. Season steaks with teaspoon sea salt per side. Chill uncovered for up to three hours. Remove the steaks from the refrigerator one hour before cooking and let them come to room temperature. Pat them dry and season again with teaspoon kosher salt; press in teaspoon of the pepper and sugar per each side so pieces adhere. Use your hottest burner to heat a stainless steel frying pan with oil to near smoke point, but do not let the oil smoke. Place the steaks in pan and fry for three to four minutes per side. Flip with tongs to avoid loss of juices. Check internal temperature by inserting a temperature pen about 2 inches into the side of the steak. The suggested internal temperature for reliably sourced grass-fed beef is 120-140 degrees F. Remove steaks and serve with flavored butter or au jus made from the browning of the pan by adding a bay leaf, cup hot water and more salt to taste.

How to prevent playground injuries

layground equipment is a magnet for children, and rightfully so. Kids love playing on swings, slides and climbing components of playsets on school properties and at area parks. While playgrounds are ideal settings for fun-filled days, they also carry a certain degree of risk. Approximately 20 children in the United States die from playground-related injures every year. More than half of these deaths result from strangulation and about one-third result from falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But parents can reduce their youngsters risk of injury and the severity of injuries in various ways.

differences in the size and stature of younger children from older ones, as well as limitations in younger childrens development. Segregated playground areas, or those with groupings of equipment recommended for certain age groups, can help limit injuries. Preschool children need smaller steps and crawl spaces, while older children can utilize overhead bars that maximize upper-arm strength.
SAFELY SITUATE EQUIPMENT. Consider placing a piece of

PURCHASE RECOMMENDED, SAFE EQUIPMENT. Parents should do their research when buying playground equipment. Consumers can check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission for any litigation involving certain manufacturers or any product recalls. It may cost a little more to install a top-ofthe-line playground set, but the peace of mind and reduced risk of injury is worth the extra cost. INVEST IN ADEQUATE SURFACING. The CPSC says roughly 60 percent of all playground injuries result from falls from structures. Although no fall is pleasant, the severity of injury resulting from a fall can be greatly reduced depending on how safe the surface material surrounding the equipment is. Blacktop, concrete or even grass can be painful to land on. However, loose-fill materials like pea gravel, sand, shredded rubber or mulch can soften falls. Plus, these materials are relatively low-cost and can be made from recycled items. But parents should know that loose-fill materials must be maintained to ensure a safe level of thickness. A depth of 12 inches is often recommended. CHOOSE AN AGE-APPROPRIATE STRUCTURE. Injuries frequently occur when children use equipment designed for older kids. Playgrounds are not one-size-fits-all. There are specific

playground equipment under a shady area to keep children comfortable and safe from sunburns. Hot equipment can result in burns and being out in direct sunlight can also cause ultraviolet damage, or UV damage, to the childrens skin. Structures should be situated so there are no obstructions or obstacles to any moving parts.

SELECT A SHORTER STRUCTURE. Studies show that the

greater the height of a playground structure the greater the risk for injury. Choose playground equipment that is nearer to the ground to prevent serious injuries from falls and other incidents.

INSPECT AND MAINTAIN THE EQUIPMENT. Safety measures must still be taken after the playground has been erected. Equipment should be routinely inspected for damage and movable parts and joints should be examined for any signs of wear and tear. Bolts should remain tight, and any hardware that is protruding should be fixed. S-rings and other links and chains should not have gaps where children can get caught. Wood should be inspected for splintering or decay and replaced where necessary. SUPERVISE KIDS AT ALL TIMES. Children should always be

supervised when playing on playground equipment, whether they are playing at school, at home or in a public park. Adults should discourage poor or risk-taking behavior that increases risk of injury. Adults also are urged to keep abreast of changing structure codes and guidelines so that equipment can be adjusted accordingly.

Kick your fear into the stratosphere!

By Teresa Martens

eve all experienced moments of fear that have kicked our fight-or-flight response into high gear. These moments, for most of us, should be far and few between. After all, we dont live in prehistoric times anymore where we have to run for our lives from man-eating creatures. Unfortunately, though, the reality is that our fight-or-flight response is perpetually turned on through stress, difficult relationships, unhealthy diets and lack of exercise. We also experience situations that leave us paralyzed in our tracks or worse, catapult us backwards a few hundred yards, leaving us dazed, confused and unsure if we are able to stand on our own two feet. Situations where we could have spoken up for ourselves but didnt leave us feeling fearful of the next encounter with our perceived adversary. The way to overcome fear is to look it straight in the eyes and acknowledge it for what it is. Simply stated, fear is an emotion that has gotten away from you. Give your fear a name. Identifying the cause of your fear takes the mystery out of it, allowing you to see it for what it really is. Ive always had a fear of snakes, with no reasonable account for it. Last summer, I was hiking in Sedona with a friend and an intuitive guide when a snake appeared, blocking our path. I became fearful. I stopped breathing, my blood pressure went up and I became paralyzed, unable to even turn around and run from it. Our guide, bless her heart, acknowledged the snake and offered me a look to see how pretty she was. Not to be outdone by a snake, I managed to take a look at this beautiful yellow snake warming herself in the Arizona sun. Our guide told me that the snake was there for me. It was a sign. After a few minutes, I was able to breathe again and I let down my guard. Our guide received an intuitive hit and explained to me that, in a previous life, I had been thrown into a pit of snakes by Vikings that had come to pillage our village. After this insight and a lengthy discussion, I came to realize the cause and have been able to release my paralyzing fear of snakes.

In your shoulders, causing tightness and resulting in a headache? By tuning in to the physical feelings of your fear, you can acknowledge the physical symptom and then ask yourself what you can do to release it. Where does fear inhabit your mental body? Volunteering in the garden

By Ann Moyer

arly last summer, we were out of town for over a week and returned to find pumpkin vines proliferating in our garden. I had not planted any pumpkin seeds or so I thought! When I traced the giant vines back to their source, I found one, single volunteer, a plant that grew from the seeds of last years Halloween pumpkin casually tossed into the garden as compost. Such garden volunteers can be a wonderful surprise. Equally surprising are the benefits of volunteering in a local community garden. Gardening is a life-giving pursuit in so many ways. Selecting seeds and planning a garden during the cold, late winter months gives us hope and expectation of the warm days ahead. The first time we can actually smell the earth again is one of the most welcome signs of spring. Finally getting our hands into the warming earth is even better! And then there are the wonderful rewards of watching the first green shoots appear, seeing the blossoms turning into fruits and vegetables and finally experiencing the incredible taste of that first fresh strawberry or the first real tomato straight from the garden. Could it get any better? Yes! When gardening becomes a communal event, as it so often does when one volunteers in a community garden, the rewards increase. Tools are shared, gardening tips are imparted, stories are exchanged and abundant produce is distributed all in ways that can happen only in the company of others. Gardening with others can reach far deeper than the simple act of gardening alone, as reflected in the following from Voices of Our Ancestors: Teachings from the Cherokee Wisdom Fire by Dhyani Ywahoo: In the traditional way of life, gardens were a ceremonial event for all, an opportunity to give to the Earth as well as to receive. The seeds of good food are also the seeds of good relationship, so caretaking the garden is symbolic of caretaking all beings. The garden can be an offering to all.
Natures Pathways | April 2014

Many opportunities exist throughout the Madison area to volunteer in a community garden, and a wealth of information is available online. A sample of some of these local garden volunteering opportunities include:
MADISON COMMUNITY GARDENS, www.cacscw.org/get_a_

garden.php: This webpage, produced by Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin, offers a fairly extensive list of community gardens throughout the Madison area.

COMMUNITY GROUNDWORKS, www.communitygroundworks.org: This is a nonprofit organization that began in 2001 as The Friends of Troy Gardens and connects people to nature and local food. A number of volunteer opportunities exist here, both in the garden and beyond. MADISON AREA FOOD PANTRY GARDENS, www.foodpantrygardens.org: Five local gardens maintained by this nonprofit group provide opportunities for volunteer gardening with all garden produce going to local food pantries and meal programs.

It is time to pull out the seed catalogues and dust off the gardening gloves. Wonderful experiences of being a garden volunteer await! Gardeners can also participate in Volunteer in Community at Holy Wisdom Monastery, www.benedictinewomen.org. This is a three-week program that provides an opportunity to live at Holy Wisdom Monastery and volunteer in the monastic communitys gardens and orchards.
Ann Moyer is the director of membership at Holy Wisdom Monastery, 4200 County Road M in Middleton. Holy Wisdom offers garden volunteer and prairie restoration opportunities as well as personal retreats with overnight accommodations in the retreat and guest house and hermitages (small cabins). Garden produce provides meals for retreatants and is shared with local food programs. Four nature trails through prairie and woods on the monastery property are available to guests. KICK YOUR FEAR INTO THE STRATOSPHERE! continued from page 55

dehydrated or hungry? Where does fear inhabit your emotional body? Do you easily anger or cower in the corner when someone offers constructive criticism? Do you cry for no apparent reason? Do you lack a connection with your divine source? How does fear inhabit your spiritual body? Do you have feelings of separateness, disconnection, emptiness, or lack of worth or purpose? When you become aware of how fear is manifesting in your life, it loses its control over you. You become empowered to make changes where necessary, creating space for a relaxed body, a sound mind, balanced emotions and spiritual connectedness. Dont allow fear to take up residence in your body physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Fear can and does serve a purpose, but it was never intended to be a way of life. Kick your fear into the stratosphere and live in peace, joy and harmony.

Turmeric
(Curcumalonga)

urmeric, a shrub related to ginger, is grown throughout India, other parts of Asia and Africa. Known for its warm, bitter taste and golden color, turmeric is commonly used in fabric dyes and foods such as curry powders, mustards and cheeses. It should not be confused with Javanese turmeric. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been used to aid digestion and liver function, relieve arthritis pain and regulate menstruation. Historically, turmeric has also been applied directly to the skin for eczema and wound healing. Today, traditional or folk uses of turmeric include heartburn, stomach ulcers, gallstones, inflammation and cancer. Turmerics finger-like underground stems (rhizomes) are dried and taken by mouth as a powder or in capsules, teas or liquid extracts. Turmeric can also be made into a paste and used on the skin.

What the science says

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicinefunded investigators have studied the active chemicals in turmeric and their effects particularly anti-inflammatory effects in human cells to better understand how turmeric might be used for health purposes. NCCAM is also funding basic research studies on the potential role of turmeric in preventing acute respiratory distress syndrome, liver cancer and post-menopausal osteoporosis.

There is little reliable evidence to support the use of turmeric for any health condition because few clinical trials have been conducted. Preliminary findings from animal and other laboratory studies suggest that a chemical found in turmeric called curcumin may have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant properties, but these findings have not been confirmed in people.

Side effects and cautions

Turmeric is considered safe for most adults; however, high doses or long-term use of turmeric may cause indigestion, nausea or diarrhea. In animals, high doses of turmeric have caused liver problems. No cases of liver problems have been reported in people. People with gallbladder disease should avoid using turmeric as a dietary supplement, as it may worsen the condition. Tell all your health-care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to Talk campaign on the centers website, ncaam.nih.gov.

Happiness habit: Dont take anything personally

By Lysianne Unruh, CPCC
ne of the greatest sources of unhappiness is taking what other people have to say personally: and what a recipe for drama! Times of challenge and change bring this drama front and center in our lives. Whether the upset comes in the form of an end to a long-term relationship, onset of illness, diagnosis of infertility, loss of a loved one or any other unexpected life event, the foundation of our comfortable world has just been rocked to the core. When our foundations are cracked like that, it is easy to let comments of others slip in and add to our suffering. Let me give you an example from my own life experience. One thing that seems to come with the territory of infertility are the inevitable comments people blurt out once they learn about our conception challenges, multiple miscarriages or even the procedures themselves. There are plenty of suggestions on how to relax and positions to try; instant pithy solutions, Well, have you thought about adoption?; or even assertions of how crazy you are for spending so much time and money to have a biological child. One of the most

memorable comments came from a girlfriend who said to me, Well, thank God, my husband and I are insanely fertile right on the heels of me revealing what had been going on in my world. So, no matter what your unexpected life event is, Im sure you too have encountered your share of thoughtless comments that had you leaning back in your chair, a little stunned.

Powerful agreement

I was happy to discover The Four Agreements, teachings of Don Miguel Ruiz. The particular agreement I still find empowering is: Dont take anything personally. Ruiz states: Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you wont be the victim of endless suffering.

Its me, not you

Not taking anything personally is about stepping into responsibility

Pet euthanasia what happens?

Katie Hilst, DVM

espite the best care in the world, inevitably every pet parent has to face their pets death. Our pets are living longer, healthier lives thanks to veterinary medicine advances, but as pets age, they may succumb to debilitating disease. Pet quality of life scales, the topic of my last article, can help pet parents through the difficult decision to euthanize. What happens during the euthanasia process? Euthanasia comes from the Greek word meaning a good death. This is a death that releases a pet from needless suffering. The American Veterinary Medical Association, or AVMA, has guidelines for veterinarians on how euthanasia is best performed. The guidelines are extensive (102 pages), but here are a few excerpts: familiar environments when practical. relax, and what was once in will come out. Some pets may have muscle twitches or even vocalization during the anesthesia/euthanasia process the pet has lost consciousness, but like in a dream, the body sometimes still moves. The breathing may speed up for a few breaths before slowing down, and the pets eyes usually do not close. While circumstances may not always allow for at-home euthanasia, it meets the guidelines for companion animal pet euthanasia formulated by the AVMA. The pet is in a quiet, familiar, comfortable environment away from stressful sights, smells and noises. Pet owners can spend the last moments with their pet peacefully, in the privacy of their own home. Pets can be surrounded by their special people. The pre-euthanasia sedative will provide pain relief, take away anxiety, and help the pet drift off to sleep before the euthanasia agent is given. This is a gentle, peaceful way to say goodbye to a pet that has given love and loyalty to you throughout their life.
Dr. Katie Hilst founded Hilst Home Euthanasia Service, a mobile veterinary service for the Madison area and surrounding communities. She offers compassionate, gentle euthanasia for families in the privacy of home. She specializes in pet quality of life consultations. 1. Euthanasia of companion animals is best conducted in quiet, 2. The animals owner should be permitted to be present during

euthanasia whenever feasible. Owners should be informed about the process they are about to observe. 3. The euthanasia process should minimize or eliminate pain, anxiety, and distress prior to loss of consciousness. At-home euthanasia can allow the pet to be in the most familiar environment, and eliminate stressful sights, sounds and smells that may accompany a trip to a clinic or hospital. Pet parents can gather family and friends of the pet that want to be present for a final goodbye. Many veterinarians choose to administer a sedative combination prior to the euthanasia injection. The sedative combination may include a pain reliever and short acting anesthetic agent in addition to the sedative. This sedation/analgesia/anesthesia will allow the pet to relax, be pain free and have anxiety relieved before the pet loses consciousness. The pets last moments are spent in comfort, and the pet is under anesthesia for the euthanasia injection. The euthanasia solution is a barbiturate that will cause the pet to lose consciousness if no pre-euthanasia sedative/anesthesia was used (otherwise the pet would already be unconscious), and slow the breathing and heartbeat to the point where both have stopped. Death is confirmed by the absence of respiration and heartbeat. During the process of sedation/anesthesia/euthanasia, pets may lose control of their urine and feces. This happens because muscles

100 percent. If what Ruiz says, nothing others do is because of you, is true, then the corollary also works: Nothing I do is because of others, and instead, what I think and do (thoughts and reactions) are a projection of my own reality and my own dreams. Wow, I hope youve had your cup of coffee this morning, because that is a bit of a brain bender. Think of the freedom available to us if we arent stuck caring what other people think, do or say, and instead, can get busy managing what we think, do or say, recognizing we are operating out of our own reality and set of dreams.

A final act of caring

Three 100 percent responsible steps

I discovered these three steps help get me out of the taking things personally zone and instead, assist me in getting to an empowered state of mind and spirit:
ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE. We tend to take

things personally when we are feeling victimized by life events and we find ourselves at the effect of what is going on. It was easy for me to take comments personally because I was certainly feeling the unfairness of life, and anything people said to me heightened this perspective.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR LISTENING FILTER. We often listen defensively, which rises from the need to protect ourselves. Often, we are struggling with our own perceptions of self-worth and what someone says, unfortunately, mirrors what weve been thinking, deep down. In the case of my friend, I was struggling with feelings of failure; her comment regarding her insane fertility served to prove how much of a failure I was and my own fertility shortcomings. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR OWN EMOTIONS. It is so much easier

to get angry at someone else for their ridiculous or unfeeling comment instead of tuning into what we are really feeling inside: sadness, fear, longing, jealousy, grief, anger. Once I tuned into my own emotional experience, it was easier to let go of the anger toward this friend.

Jane beefs up her kitchen

hen I was 20 years old, I moved back to Wisconsin from Hawaii, where I had been living for eight years. My first experience eating a steak here after returning was awful I thought there was something wrong with the meat! I was at a nice restaurant on a first date, so I kept my mouth closed and left the steak to the side. After I told my father about my experience, he pointed out that the beef I was used to eating in Hawaii was 100 percent grass-fed. I later found out the steak I didnt care for was corn-fed. This made a major difference! See, in Hawaii, my family got our beef from a local farmer in Haiku, where the fields were open and you could see the cattle eating grass. Our steaks came from the local slaughter house. We knew where our meat came from and I didnt think twice about eating it. When I learned about factory-farmed beef, I was shocked, saddened and could not bring myself to eat it any longer. I had a conscience that wouldnt allow me to eat something that I felt so wrong about. Thats why finding Seven Seeds Farm in Spring Green was such a relief! They offer pasture-raised beef that is certified organic. They also provide pasture-raised all-natural chicken, farm-fresh eggs (the yolk is a bright, beautiful yellow!), pasture-raised allnatural pork (no small pens on this farm!) and other goods like duck eggs, which I learned are great to bake with. They also offer organic grass-fed ghee and hominy, which is made from blue Hopi corn and considered a complete protein. Seven Seeds delivers in Madison and the surrounding areas, but I prefer to go there myself. I love the long, winding hilly country roads that take me there! Its all part of the experience for me. I love that when I arrive, I can see Blue Mounds hills behind the happy grazing cattle. The chickens have room to run around and everything looks real and natural. The store on the farm is more like a home. Check out the bathroom! Youll want to stay for a while. I believe Seven Seeds Farm is what our ancestors imagined

modern farms would be like. The animals are treated humanely and the farm is certified by the American Grassfed Association and has the Animal Welfare Approved label for their humane slaughter. Besides, the meat and eggs are phenomenal! The all-beef hot dogs are among my sons and my favorites. When you bite into one, it is unlike any other hot dog you have experienced. The hot dogs are dense and meaty with a nice snap from the casing. In addition to that, we actually feel full after eating only one! They are simply delicious. Our favorite steak is the rib-eye. They are so tender and with the marbling of the fat, taste beyond delicious. Do not overcook them, though! I brought some of these steaks over to my girlfriends house and she grilled them along with steaks from a local grocery store. There was no comparison. Well be sticking to Seven Seeds steaks from now on! Pork from Seven Seeds is great, too. I once made a pork roast that my son and I just devoured. The meat is very tasty, but I also love not having fear or guilt about not knowing where the pork is coming from. Seven Seeds also has a delicious array of breakfast foods available. Of course, my sons ultimate favorite is the bacon. Made crispy or a little, what we like to call floppy, its scrumptious! The eggs have sunny yellow yolks and taste fresh and natural (because they are!). Its so wonderful having an all natural farm like Seven Seeds nearby. Their great mission, tasty food and overall experience make it such a treasure!

P
Bats

lanning and maintaining a garden requires a lot of effort, which can result in an aesthetically pleasing addition to the landscape. But that hard work can also fall victim to nature when local wildlife finds a garden too mouthwatering to resist. In an effort to rid a garden of unwanted pests, gardeners may unwittingly scare away animals and insects that might protect the garden from more ill-intentioned animals. Not every creature that scurries around your yard is out to get your prized petunias or devour your tomatoes. In fact, many can prove beneficial to gardens.

Snakes

Snakes in a garden can be disconcerting to some people, but snakes are ideal predators who feed on insects and rodents several times their size. Snakes are the right size and shape to invade the burrows of pest animals.

Butteries and bees

Bats have a bad reputation as people unnecessarily fear them because they are believed to be carriers of disease. Many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a human. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour, so its easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance, but also harbor potentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain rodents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in your yard.

Butterflies and bees are responsible for pollinating the vast majority of plants. Avoid using pesticides that may diminish butterfly or bee populations. A beehive right next to a garden may not be practical, but dont make attempts to destroy it. Consult with a professional beekeeper to see what can be done to move the beehive without destroying it. Many animals and insects can be detrimental to the health of your garden. However, several animals are handy to have around and should be welcomed to the landscape.
Source: MetroCreative Connection

Frogs

Frogs and toads will prey on insects and make the local insect population more manageable. Toads eat mainly slugs, who feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Frogs and toads are attracted to water, so including a pond or another water feature in the garden will provide them a habitat they like.

Spiritual Clearings for the soul Done by Sonya Theis

Birds

While it is true that some birds can damage crops, many birds are content to feed on insects attracted to the garden, which helps to keep insect numbers in check. Chickadees, for example, dine on aphid eggs, while larger birds may prey on mice, other rodents or simply scare them out of the garden. Jays and mockingbirds are known to be feisty and can even deter dogs and cats from a yard. Hummingbirds will sip on the nectar of flowers and help pollinate plants.

The twist behind infertility

Part 1
By Wade Anunson, DC

e all happen to know someone who has either struggled or is struggling with fertility and creating the child theyve always wanted. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive or the inability to carry full term. Both can be daunting emotionally and financially for any couple whose hearts are set on children, but there is hope to be found if youre willing to shift your perspective. Statistics show that about 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States

ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, of which 40 percent of the time male fertility is part of the infertility diagnosis. We will focus on clinically observed patterns with women and infertility. Medically, the most common causes of infertility are blockage of the fallopian tubes preventing the egg from passing from the ovary to the uterus, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ovarian cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and fibroid

tumors all of which will prevent fertilization of the egg or successful implantation. Aside from in vitro fertilization or fertility drugs, medicine offers very little in addressing the cause behind the infertility. The above medical reasons are also symptoms: the result of a deeper problem. Chiropractors are able to help women with a myriad of conditions, including thyroid, adrenal, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, PID, PCOS and fertility. The truth is, chiropractors rarely actually treat any of those conditions; rather, they treat the causes underlying them. Confused? It may be confusing because our social norms, especially in health care, are about treating or fixing a condition or symptom. Shifting this perspective from treating the symptoms to treating the body as a whole, including its structural and functional imbalances, to allow a womans (or mans) body to function physiologically and hormonally, as its designed, is the biggest idea I know of. This is a totally different perspective from mainstream medicine. Symptoms are clues to a problem, not necessarily the problem.

The twist

Penny was referred to a chiropractor by her husband, Ron, for some mid-back pain and knee problems shed been having for several months. Upon evaluation, the chiropractor found severe pelvic obliquity (twisted hips)
64
Natures Pathways | April 2014
www.naturespathways.com

resulting in a -inch leg length imbalance and several misaligned vertebra (subluxations) throughout her spine. The chiropractor recommended a course of care and over the next six weeks adjusted her body into healthier alignment to the point where her mid-back and knee pain were gone: no heel lift, no surgery. Penny then shared her story of the years shed suffered with GERD and chronic sinusitis, and that since beginning care, they were also significantly improved. Her previous -inch hip imbalance was now less than inch, resulting in her walking better, standing longer and sleeping better. When they first met, Penny never thought to tell her chiropractor about her infertility, because like many, she didnt see a connection. The chiropractor had no idea Penny and Ron had gone through seven years of fertility treatments with no success. Two years before Penny first visited the chiropractor, dejected from their inability to conceive, Penny and Ron had given up all hope they could have a child: they believed it just wasnt meant to be for them. Four months after her first visit, Penny came in for her chiropractic appointment

Four months after her rst visit, Penny came in for her chiropractic appointment elated she was six weeks pregnant!
elated she was six weeks pregnant! She has since given birth to two healthy children.

Conclusion

Chiropractic is not a cure for infertility. If subluxation is present, it is an essential component that can impede the coordination of reproductive, digestive and immune system function. Our system of spinal analysis pinpoints problem areas that affect musculoskeletal and neurological control. The pelvis, tailbone and lumbar spine carry vital neurologic messages to organs and systems involved in reproduction, blood flow and hormonal functions. Once these misalignments are corrected, your body can restore healthy coordination of these systems as you are designed. Pelvic obliquity is one of many patterns chiropractors are trained to correct, which

in my experience have a direct impact with fertility, conception and of course a healthy full-term pregnancy. Pelvic obliquity may not be involved in every case, yet it can be very simply ruled out with a spinal evaluation before more invasive and costly medical procedures are performed.

Research behind Reconnective Healing

By Peggy Bong

Dr. Eric Pearls healing discovery

When Dr. Eric Pearl began exhibiting a mysterious healing ability in 1993, he couldnt imagine what it might be, or its source. As a successful Los Angeles chiropractor with a dozen years experience, he was a firm believer in evidence-based medicine that operates on proven scientific principles. But this new ability was unlike any science-based method he knew. It manifested as a strange, vibrating energy in his hands, and many of his patients reported healings simply when he held his hands near them. Dr. Pearl was deeply curious. He accepted the invitation of Gary Schwartz, Ph.D., head of the Human Energy Systems Department (now called the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health) at the University of Arizona. Schwartz invited Pearl to his lab to begin research on Pearls experiences. To date, more than a decade of research has been documented by worldrenowned scientists, including Schwartz; William Tiller, Ph.D.; and Konstantin Korotkov, Ph.D., into what Pearl has come to call Reconnective Healing.

Reconnective Healing frequencies bring healing beyond just what has been classically known as energy healing into a broader spectrum of energy, light and information.
Healing frequencies bring healing beyond just what has been classically known as energy healing into a broader spectrum of energy, light and information. Dr. Tillers results showed there was a dramatic increase in the excess free thermodynamic energy in the room. Comparing the shift to what one would see if it were a simple measurement of energy, the temperature of the room would have increased by 300 degrees Celsius! But with Reconnective Healing, while the actual room temperature does not change, the amount of energy, light

Research discovers new frequencies of healing

The results of Tillers experiment on Reconnective Healing frequencies done for the first time at one of The Reconnections seminars held in Sedona, Ariz. in 2006 was so extraordinary that he repeated his study of this phenomena three more times over the next several years, just to be certain that his data was accurate. What Tiller has shown has the medical research community quite baffled. He explained that although the energy healing techniques we know of today utilize electromagnetic energy, Reconnective Healing brings us up to a higher dimensional level. In Reconnective Healing, what is happening is that many kinds of energy and light are flowing through the healer and into the healee, not just what we were accessing before. In other words, the Reconnective

and information charging the room does precisely what Tiller was able to measure. Tiller reports that his data shows that entropy declines during Reconnective Healing, allowing coherence to prevail. Entropy is the natural state of decay and decline when all things are not held together by a force, attention effort and focus. Entropy causes aging, chaos, decay and disease. So when entropy declines (negative entropy), greater coherence or order is present. Thus, coherence prevails and balance is introduced into the body, helping it to restore and rejuvenate. These findings are highly significant in offering insight into how people are changed after learning or interacting with the Reconnective Healing frequencies. Dr. Korotkovs research corroborates both Tillers and Schwartzs findings, using cutting-edge imaging methodologies and measurement devices.

Animals will benet as well as people

The benefits of these powerful frequencies are not just limited to helping people. Animals can also receive healing. For that matter, studies also have shown that plants benefit from this work. It seems that these new frequencies can restructure our DNA and help all living things to heal on new and comprehensive levels. According to Pearl, once activated by the Reconnective frequencies, healing and evolution will continue at your own rate every day, for the rest of your life. Experience for yourself the potentially life-changing Reconnective Healing.

Reconnective Healing appears to be an evolutionary process

Schwartzs multiple studies show that Reconnective Healing practitioners can produce a wave, or more specifically a bandwidth of frequency waves that literally affect the DNA of living things in a powerful and healing fashion. According to Pearl, this healing is about an evolutionary process brought into existence through co-creation at the highest vibrational interaction with the universe, at the highest vibrational interaction with the field.

Celeriac an old soul

By Debi Morton
pring vegetables will be popping up soon, but until then, dont forget some of the vegetables that kept people going through some of the harshest winters in history. Celeriac is one of them. It stores so well, yet has a light taste with hints of spring in its flavor. Celeriac is an underground root vegetable and is not so pretty, with lots of bumps, crevices and tendrils. But, it is great tasting, easy and versatile. It can stand on its own or join other root vegetables. It loves cream and earthy flavors like truffle oil. You can eat it raw, steamed, boiled, sauted (celeriac potato hash), roasted (gratin); made into soups, stews, salads (raw), pures; and featured as a side (celeriac potato dumplings or latkes). Celeriac is like a geode, understated outside with a beautiful gem inside.

History

Celeriac is derived from wild celery, which has a small, edible root and has been used in Europe since ancient times (it is mentioned in Homers Odyssey as selinon), according to seasonal food resource Eat the Seasons. Celeriac is not the root of the celery we eat.

Celeriac was bred thousands of years ago from wild celery that had larger roots. The Romans reported using the two types of celery (Apium graveolens): stalk celery (var. dulce) and celery/celeriac root (var. rapaceum). The Chinese have been using wild celery (var. ache) since the fifth century. It isnt exactly clear when celeriac was first cultivated, but there are references to it dating back to the 17th century, according to Eat the Seasons. Here is a very old and enjoyable description, including now-defunct spellings, from John Parkinsons book, Theatrum Botanicum: The Theater of Plants, published in 1640: chiefly used as a Sallet both herb and root eaten eyther raw or boyled: the root being scraped is sliced and so eaten with oyle and vinegar. Celeriac became popular in Europe in 1613, according to Alan Davidson in The Oxford Companion to Food. Most references about celeriac cuisine mention the French dish celeri remoulade, a salad of raw, grated celeriac in a mustard mayonnaise. Celeriac is also used in German version of mirepoix, called Suppengrn. Today, celeriac is uncommon outside of Europe or Western Asia, according to Eat the

Seasons. It is still popular in France, Germany and Italy. But it is in season now in the U.S.

Growing

German-American farmers who grew the plant liked to keep it wet, surrounded at first with dirt and watered frequently. When the bulbs became larger than a fist, the celeriac was covered with dirt to blanch it. Ripe in October, celeriac was left in ground until frost approached. When harvested, the entire plant was pulled stalk, leaves and root and covered with sand. This way it could last the winter. In todays garden, celeriac is not hard to grow, but has a long time to maturation.

Medicinal uses

Celery root has the same medicinal properties as celery but it is a little milder. It is an aromatic, bitter tonic herb that reduces high blood pressure, relieves indigestion, stimulates the uterus and aids in treating rheumatism and kidney complaints. It is not to be prescribed for pregnant women.

Other uses

Growing celeriac plant repels the cabbage white fly. Is also a good companion plant for leeks, tomatoes, French beans and brassicas.

Health benets

Celeriac is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, manganese, vitamin C and phosphorus.

Purchasing celeriac seed or root

Seeds purchased for starting plants should not be used for medicinal use, as they are treated with fungicide. The Environmental Working Group, which analyzes pesticide residue testing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Drug Administration to rank popular fresh produce items, found that celery is fourth-highest in pesticide residue. Additionally, celeriac is often grown with fungicides. Buy organic!

allowance, for dietary intake of magnesium. I have read more recent studies citing 70 to 80 percent deficiencies of magnesium. Why the big concern? The National Institutes of Health, NIH, lists magnesium as being necessary for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. This vital mineral aids in producing energy inside the cells. It works hand in hand with calcium: Calcium makes the muscles contract, while magnesium helps the muscles relax. Magnesium helps relieve muscle cramping and spasms, colic, and spastic bowel conditions, and helps prevent heart attacks. Combine magnesium with vitamin B6 and you can relieve most PMS symptoms along with dissolving calcium oxalate kidney stones. But watch that calcium intake in supplement form. Overconsumption of calcium can actually contribute to magnesium deficiency. Weve talked about your body being over acidic before and that is no different in magnesium deficiency. Magnesium and potassium are the first minerals to be lost in an overly acidic condition of the body. Remember, we want to keep our bodies in the 7.3 pH range on the pH scale. When we get below that number, we are susceptible to disease or worse. Alcohol, diuretics, diarrhea, fluoride and vitamin D can deplete the body of magnesium. How do you know if you are magnesium deficient? Well, odds are you probably are. Your doctor can tell by giving you a standard serum magnesium blood test. Conditions that might prevail if you are severely magnesium deficient are many, but I will list a few here: abdominal pain and inflammation, adrenals (exhaustion, weakness and burnout), angina, anxiety, arrhythmia and arthritis, spastic colon, confusion and leg and menstrual cramps. This list is long and goes on and on. If your migraines are accompanied by muscular tension or cramping and anything feels too tight, you are experiencing constipation, heart palpitations, anxiety, insomnia or fatigue, magnesium

Connecting with your true self

By Don Neviaser

ne of the strongest messages I share with others is the importance of connecting with your true self so you can live more in line with whom you really are and know the power and beauty of thinking, feeling, acting and speaking from true center; a powerful place from which to live a far happier, more fulfilling life! But, what is your true self ? This concept covers a lot of territory, but basically your true self is your unique, innermost essence: that place between your heart and mind that defines who you really are, including your innermost thoughts, your unique voice, deep-seated aspirations and tastes, creative and heartfelt desires, etc. It is only in developing inner relations and self-awareness that you can know your greatest happiness in life. Many people are fortunate and blessed to connect early on with their true center, usually because of being positively encouraged to accept and explore it during formative years. This is a gift that is very often further enjoyed through pursuits that are heartfelt extensions of their inner essence. But most of us are not so lucky, and without this comfortable inner connection, we may well spend a lot of our lives looking outward for inner fulfillment, only guessing at what may otherwise fill the gaps of unknown hounding our hearts. We all harbor versions of the person we would ultimately like to be, consisting of preferences in line with our innermost tastes, with an eye on appeasing the tastes of others so we may be better liked and accepted. Unfortunately, many of us end up bouncing between who we really are, who we want to be and how we want to be perceived because of a variety of internal and external messages, whether a less-than-kind comment from someone or misinterpretations of how others see us tainted by our own self-doubt. Lets be honest, we are not always kind to ourselves and insecurities or negative assumptions can create deep divisions between our genuine perspectives, our desired perspectives and our true character. The problem is that images and actions performed more for the eyes and attention of others, outside of a controlled environment, especially when done at the expense of true preferences and desires, can create a static state of emotional unrest, dissatisfaction and lack of inner unity and fulfillment. You cannot know inner peace or move forward with momentum or consistency without acting, to some degree, in unison with who you really are and you cannot hide forever

behind the walls of appearance and know true happiness. Such an ambiguous frame of heart also makes it harder to create a well within from which to draw inner strength and peace in life. To know your true self is to know not only your core needs, desires, abilities, strengths and weaknesses, but also how you fit into the world and affect those around you. But to even begin the process of connecting within, you must first have the confidence and conviction that your needs are relevant and that it is truly worthwhile tapping into and validating any unexplored chapters

oly Wisdom Monastery, home to Benedictine Women of Madison, an ecumenical community, weaves prayer, hospitality, justice and care for the earth into a shared way of life. We welcome women and men into sacred space to pray, study and nourish one another. Compelled by the Gospel and rooted in the Benedictine tradition, we support personal and community growth as we live out our mission and values in a changing world. Our ecumenical community invites single Christian women of any denomination to visit the monastery and explore a call to monastic life through our Benedictine Sojourners program. Holy Wisdom Monastery features two main buildings, the monastery and the retreat and guest house. The monastery, which opened in 2009, has four meeting rooms for gatherings of eight to 300 people. Weekly worship services, weddings, memorial services, meetings, special events, meditation and spiritual gatherings are held here. The monastery was awarded the highest LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is one of the greenest buildings in the U.S. All are welcome to join the community in daily prayer or Sunday worship at 9 a.m. at the monastery. The retreat and guest house has 17 guest rooms with private baths for overnight personal and group retreats, and provide a contemplative setting for relaxation, meditation and renewal. Four meeting rooms in the retreat and guest house accommodate four to 90 individuals for meetings, celebrations, workshops and team-building activities. Our setting provides the opportunity to get away from your place of work and the busyness of daily life. Food for guests, retreats, meetings and events at Holy Wisdom Monastery is prepared from scratch by our monastery chef. Organic produce, much of which is grown in the monastery garden, is used in many of the meals. We accommodate most

common food allergies with advance notice and food is prepared separately. The monastery grounds include two hermitages, located in a peaceful wooded area. These hermitages are ideal for quiet personal retreats lasting from one night to multiple weeks. The property surrounding Holy Wisdom is comprised of more than 100 acres of restored prairie, a small glacial lake, woodland and 4 miles of nature trails. Holy Wisdom Monastery has a long tradition of caring for the earth and reducing runoff of pollutants, especially phosphorous, into the Lake Mendota watershed. As part of the Wisdom Prairie Project, Holy Wisdom is currently raising funds to restore 53 more acres of prairie and partnering with Dane County to construct a bike trail on the north side of Lake Mendota. The Wisdom Prairie Project will reduce the amount of phosphorous runoff into Lake Mendota by 110 pounds per year. Holy Wisdom Monastery is located at 4200 County Road M in Middleton, 20 minutes from downtown Madison and 15 minutes from the Dane County Regional Airport. deficiency may be a factor. Many people have magnesium deficiencies. Always stay hydrated with water alkaline water if you can find it. Soda is your worst enemy in todays world. A beer instead is actually better for you. Too many people consume several sodas per day. You cannot drink enough water to combat the acid content of even two sodas. You would have to drink 800 ounces of alkaline water just to get your body back to where it was (pH wise) prior to drinking those two sodas. It is no wonder so many people get colds and the flu! Our societys immune systems are at an all-time low here in America. Magnesium deficiency along with iodine deficiencies are at epidemic levels here in the U.S. A good general vitamin and mineral supplement program will do wonders for your health. Its like mechanics say, Pay me now or pay me later. In the end, we all pay one way or another. Its the quality of life that I look for in myself and my peers.

of your heart. You must learn, or relearn, to listen to your innermost thoughts and feelings without judgment or reactively painting them with negative overtones and labels, and even if you do, make it a point to act in line with your journey to self-respect by correcting yourself with the patience of a friend. Only with enough time, devotion and genuine inner-actions will you know the joy, comfort and privilege of living from true center with genuine confidence in the unique person you are! Maybe now is a good time to start listening and approving of what is in your heart and, as you would for a friend, focus on more positive, less condemning self-perceptions, letting the rest go. Being self-aware and connected allows you to comfortably feel, think and act from true center, and it is from this place of confidence and clarity that you will far better know the right life path upon which to walk, including the right people or person to have by your side!
