Motor Oil is the most common oil to be spilled in the ground. Motor oil contains a lot of toxic substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are known to cause cancer. Once the oil is exposed by heat and or oxygen during engine combustion this changes its chemical makeup. Most of the used motor oil eventually makes its way into waterways. Used motor oil is toxic to plants and animals living in the water. It can also pollute soil and drinking water. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one gallon of used motor oil can contaminate one million gallons of fresh water. Soil becomes less productive when its exposed by motor oil. Its not very difficult to prevent motor oil entering the environment. There is many recycling centers which have used-oil disposal stations. Never dispose used motor oil in the trash, down household drains, into storm drains or directly onto soil. Inspect equipment and vehicles regularly and do immediate repairs if needed.
