0008b Letter (Fragment) Stephen DeForest Hopkins in a school They seem to think at present they will want me for sometime here, but they may change their minds. by the time the summer vacation comes & even if they should not, you know it is a good time to leave when people wish you to stay - & as I am under no engagement, if anythin more favorable presents its-self I think shall not come back in the Fall shall want a change by that time The school is very pleasant I think particularly my part of it there are some very pretty young ladies most of them quite advanced have some classes that I enjoy very much Algebra, Geometry & French, in particular You were right in thinking I did not teach Latin & Greek. If your sister should chance to hear of any thing place where a teacher was is wanted would like to know, but I hope she will not give herself any trouble about it I shall take what other means I have of finding a situation. I will not depend upon any in particular Ticonderoga is quite a place after all - & there are some very pleasant people here we have had Lectures upon subjects almost a quarter of a yard long then too we have had Shakespearian .readings. very good but it is growing dark as you might easily guess so I must go home will try & finish this evening. Feb. 2nd It is Sabbath evening & more than a week since the above was [commented?] I certainly feel ashamed to send such an affair but I have so little time to write fear I should do no better. Feb'y 13th I have been hesitating for some time DeForest whether I should send this or not. It is Sabbath afternoon have just returned from church with my friend Miss Sheldon with whom I have been staying since yesterday Miss Morgan has been away; cannot say that we have regretted her absence very much Have heard two very fine sermons to day The one in the morning I was particularly pleased with for the words "It is easier for heaven & Earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail" wish you could have heard it Was somewhat surprised to hear from you in Glenns Falls you will not need to be told that I was very glad to hear that you had a permanent prospect in view. Have not written to L Abie (or to anyone else) since I recv'd your letter. now you will doubtless have an opportunity to deliver the message yourself. please remind her. when itis quite convenient I should be glad to hear from her I have some hopes of seeing you before lon as I shall probably be home in less than five weeks. How swiftly the weeks fly by when one has constan employment I am now writing while Mr Sheldon & Amanda are talking. he has just been reading over some old "love letters" did you ever hear of such a thing I imagine they sound differently to him from what they did when first written as he has just remarked that a child five years old ought to write better sense Getting married seems to work a wondrous change in peoples ideas I suppose there are some very [wild?] [spinners?] of the "genus homo" in the world. but I have precious little

confidence in them there are a few married & engaged gentlemen that I think a considerable of. but they are exceptions as a general thing they are wisest who put no trust in men I am very sure that you will be glad to have such a letter come to an end I would not send it: only I think it will give [?] that I feel a deep interest in your welfare I hope that you wont think the two letters I have sent you are fair specimens of my letter writing for I do think I can do a little better. Never fear of writing too much or too often hope when I hear from you again I shall be able to sit down immediately & respond for it is so much easier than after you have waited a long time As I have written no letters of late you will not consider yourself neglected I hear the dishes downstairs so I conclude we are about to be summoned to dinner so I must lay aside my pen By the way I suppose you have heard that Mr J has found another lady to whom he is very
