0009 Civil War Letters Wing Family

Camp Near Ft Ethan Allen V.A. Nov 19th 1862 Dear Father & mother. The mess chest and spragues boot box have both arrived here safe and sound but very few things were broken the box'es lay in washington some time before the Capt knew they were there. Yesterday Liet Chamberlin went down to Washington to see Capt Dunk Cameron and while there made search for the box'es and by dint of hard labor and some coaxing and paying out all of his money he managed to get the boxes up as far as georgetown and this afternoon they were brought here the regt by the team that goes to georgetown after bread and you may be sure the rejoising in our co was great. I do not doubt in the least but mother would have been amply repaid for her trouble if she could have stood by and seen the smiling faces as each one would step up and when his name was called and receive his little package from home and turn about and run to his tent holering out to the other boys, see here what I have got. one man got among other things an old clay pipe and I believe there is not a man in our company that smokes who has no spoken for a smoke out of the clay pipe I am afraid the poor old glens Falls pipe will never live to go through all of our hands. All our things were in the best of order I am now writing this letter with the pen that you sent me and you can see by my writing that I am very much pleased with it. the butter comes nicely in play just now especialy for me for I cannot eat pork and that is mostly all the meat we have. Our regt is under marching orders so says camp rumor if true we are liable to march any moment. The pillows are just what I have wished for a dozen times and I shall try mine to night and the next time I write I will let you know how it goes, but I do honestly believe that the tobaco pleased me ful as much as any thing tell walt to send that article as often as he gets a chance for our sutler charges an exorbertan price for every thing tobaco in particular charges ten cts for a paper of chewing tabaco such as we would get at home for three cts. love to all Affectionately your Son E.M. Wing

Father I wish you would have frank draw some wood up to my house. Ed
