In the 13th century, windmills were built as power sources to grind grain, draw water, and
extract seed oils. In the 15th century, they often were used to reclaim land by drainage. Today,
the windmill ranks with the tulips as the best-known symbols of Holland.
Kinderdijk, near Rotterdam, is renowned as the place in the Netherlands with the greatest
number of windmills. Dutch windmills have become even more popular since the windmills at
Kinderdijk and Elshout were declared World Heritage Sites in 1997.
