Breanne Rowland OCCT 651 Occupational Profile Reflection

The individual who I did my occupational profile on is a 54 year old female who was born in Ogden, Utah and moved to Henderson, Nevada as a younger child. Currently, she attends the Las Vegas Adult Day Care Center 6x/week, as well as the Connections group for memory loss 1x/week. She is diagnosed with Dementia (early onset), Hypertension (HTN), Depression, and has a history of narcotic abuse. She is seeking services due to a decrease in independence and performance capabilities in the areas of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), social participation, self-direction, and cognitive abilities. She has many concerns relative to independently engaging in occupations that are meaningful to her and daily life activities. She has recently begun showing signs of Aphasia and Agraphia, which has decreased her ability to communicate. The family also has concerns primarily with independence, social participation, and cognitive abilities. Her concerns mainly involve the inability to participate in activities, feeling unsatisfied with life, feeling empty, being bored, scared, and helpless. During my time spent at the Las Vegas Adult Day Care Center, I helped facilitate/participate in the Connections memory care program on Friday, August 2nd, 9th, and 23rd. During this time, I was able to spend time with the individual, observe, participate, and help facilitate activities planned for the day. The activities for the group were constructed based on the selected theme of the week. The themes that I had the opportunity to facilitate/ participate in included flowers, Aloha, and laughter. The activities that the individual engaged in consisted on naming three people whom were significant, reading horoscopes, and learning/ watching

good news in the community. The activity of naming three people who were significant to the individual helped initiate cognitive stimulation. This required the individual to think of memories that were meaningful and positive. It also helped encourage the individual to socially participate within the group and share experiences. The activity of reading horoscopes enabled the individual to self-reflect and contemplate how her horoscope pertained to her. The good news in the community was used to help initiate positive emotions. During this time, I was able to hear the individuals story. I was also able to observe and experience the importance of a memory care program and its influence on this individuals life.
