ABSTRACT
ENHANCING EARLY LITERACY

FACILITATORS

EWE CHOY CHOO

This series of workshops will start with a talk by Ms. Ewe Choy Choo from the Curriculum Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia. She will focus on KSSR or the Standardsbased Curriculum for Primary Schools which emphasizes basic literacy and stresses the importance of penmanship and the use of phonics to teach the reading skill. The phonics workshop series will be conducted by Ms Chew Lay Kean who has 20 years of experience working effectively with pre-school children (including children with special needs) using the Phonics 44 Reading Scheme in a Montessori environment. The Phonics 44 Reading Scheme answers the following questions: What are phonemes? What is Phonemic awareness? Why is the systematic learning of phonics most effective in achieving early literacy? How can we help a young child become a fluent reader? How to enhance the effective teaching of phonics with learning aids? Ewe Choy Choo is the assistant director of the Curriculum Development Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia and is attached to the English Language Unit (Primary). She holds a Master in Education (Early childhood education) and has been with CDC since 2010.

CHEW LAY KEAN

Chew Lay Kean holds a Montessori International Diploma and a Masters of Art in Early Childhood Studies from Roehampton University. In 1994, she set up Montessori Childrens House (MCH), a kindergarten dedicated to the optimum development of mainstream children and children with special needs. Systematic phonics is part of the curriculum and young children work at their own pace to become fluent and independent readers.
