Hi all, One of the goals Ive had since I first took this job was to have a balanced knowledge of the Chapter and all of its aspects. After 5 years of scheduling conflicts I finally managed to take the Chapter Outings Leader (COL), Level I, training course. I was totally impressed by the knowledge, skill, and organized efforts of Karen Smith, our COL Trainer. She and her assistants were awesome! We are extremely fortunate in this chapter to have so many leaders with such dedication and skill. They make our chapter the best! Part of the requirement for becoming a COL is to lead two evaluated outings. My first was a New Years Conservation Awareness hike through some recovering chaparral country in NE Jamul, followed (unofficially) by a potluck and campfire fun. We hiked through an area that had been burned a couple of years before in the Viejas fire, and observed the post-fire plant recovery. It was amazing to see plants growing at all, considering that they are coping with the effects of four years of drought, as well as the fire. Some of the plants are so delicate and fragile looking that it is hard to believe they are really there. Nature is a wonder! We even saw Mountain Lion tracks right on our trail! It was fun trying to determine the size of the animal. We were joined by two biologists, one from Fish and Game and one from the Navy. I was graciously assisted by Pat Klaasen, and evaluated by expert Larry Klaasen. Both are experienced, knowledgeable, and versatile COLs. All of my hikers were knowledgeable folk as well. We were very fortunate to have such a great wealth of knowledge amongst us and enjoyed sharing our expertise and learning from each other. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, and with Larrys coaching, learned even more things about COL-ing. All in all I have been thoroughly proud to be part of such an exceptional program and group of people. Thanks to you all who make this possible. I am lucky to even hope to follow in your footsteps! We are an awesome chapter, everyone!!!! Happy Trails, Cheryl HS

For environmental reasons, the Sierra Club strongly recommends car pooling. However, for insurance reasons, COLs cannot arrange car pools, although members may voluntarily arrange them among themselves. The COL and other trip participants may (or may not) be present at an arranged car pool location. The Sierra Club and its leaders can assume no responsibility for the drivers or the vehicles. Please offer to help reimburse your driver. A suggested guideline is based on typical total operating expenses (not just gas): one passenger - 9 cents per mile; two passengers - 7 cents per mile each; three passengers - 5 cents per mile each; four passengers - 4 cents per mile each. Tolls, entrance or parking fees should also be split among the passengers. If you switch cars, you should still pay your original driver the suggested round trip cost.
