Model: Teacher will model how to sort use individual word cards and combine two to make a compound word. For example, under and stand make understand. Guided Practice: Students will complete the activity in pairs. They must match all cards to make compound words and will be given 10 minutes to complete. Independent Practice: Students will complete the activity in pairs so IP is not applicable. Closure: After students have finished their activity, we will discuss as a group what words students were able to make. If time permits, students will do a word search and then get ready for the next subject, comprehension. Assessment: Teacher will be informally observing student participation and accuracy of making compound words.
Independent Practice: After students are on track with their flip books, the teacher will pull back so students can work independently. Closure: After students have finished their flip books they will share their books with a friend. Students will then get ready for the next subject, comprehension. Assessment: Teacher will be informally observing student participation and accuracy of making their flipbooks.
Review/Assessment: Formative: Throughout the week students will be observed by cooperating teacher and student teacher. Summative: The assessment for this word study unit will be on Friday February 7, 2014. Students will complete a Word Knowledge Assessment which will include dictation sentences as well as dictation words. Part II (5 points) Dictate words below and have students write them down. 1. Overpaid 2. Understand 3. Underline 4. Overcast
Pre-Reflection: I think these lessons will be taught effectively because I am using the cooperating teachers format of delivering the lesson. My CTs way of teaching word study is very explicit which helps students learn their spelling and vocabulary a bit easier. In addition, I took a lot of time to prepare materials for these lessons by cutting ahead of time. I hope to grade the assessment and see that my students have learned more about compound words as patterns of smaller words.
Reflection Update (2/10/2014) After reviewing my students assessments, I felt accomplished. Majority of the class did very well and they were able to spell their word study words accurately by combining two smaller words into one compound word.
