I chose martial law in Taiwan as my topic because I thought that it would be a great way to explore my family history and

uncover the experiences of my ancestors. Much of this history has never been recorded and never will be if someone does not go back to actually document the experiences of the generation that lived under the thing that was the White Terror. Martial law in Taiwan is also very little-known. You won t find it in most--if any--history textbooks because the information on it was either destroyed or ignored. This topic must be recorded so that it becomes a piece of history! not "ust a blank period of time.

#esearch for this topic was not easy. $ lot of the information on my topic was never written down! destroyed! or has simply been forgotten. I looked at places such as the %ittle #ock &ublic %ibrary to find books on rights and Taiwan s history. 'adly! much of the information I sought was not present or simply propaganda. I then turned to the web to find more about martial law in Taiwan. $round halfway through (ovember of )*+,! it was brought to my attention that my family has possession of a family memoir that contains photos and first-hand accounts of life under martial law in Taiwan. This turned my research around! as I turned to my family for interviews and photo evidence. #esearch on this topic was hard! but very rewarding.

To select my presentation category! I tried to find the form of display that would be the most interactive and enriching. I ruled out documentary! performance! and paper earliest- they felt too impersonal for the information that I wanted to present. .eciding between exhibit and web site was the hardest. I wanted a fully interactive experience! but a virtual or a physical one/ I finally decided on website! since I could present a lot of information easily in an organi0ed manner. My choice for (1. )*+, in presenting Martial %aw2 #eign of the White Terror was to do a website!

and I believe that was my best choice. I began to organi0e my website as categories3rights and responsibilities! martial law! background! etc. These topics re4uired individual attention as each re4uired images! interviews! and research. I built my website around these categories! to push a user-friendly interface where all the information was completely organi0ed for efficiency.

Martial law relates to the theme for (1. )*+,-)*+5 of rights and responsibilities in history because it is! by definition! all about rights and responsibilities. Those living under martial law are deprived of their rights. The government can be irresponsible enough to let the place they are governing over go to ruin. This irresponsibility of a leader can come from not budgeting! letting economic growth drop! etc. Martial law is an example of when the people have no rights and the government has no accountability for keeping up with responsibilities.
